How Much Does It Cost To Rescue Matt Damon In His Movies?

Matt Damon is often finding himself in jeopardy on the big screen.

His latest, ‘The Martian’, sees all manner of expense incurred in order to return him safely to Earth after he’s stranded on Mars.

But it’s far from the first time that money has had to be shelled out to get him out of a bind.

Pleasingly, Kynan Eng, a researcher based in Zurich, has done some sums and published his findings on Q&A website Quora.

And the numbers involved are pretty substantial. Take his latest jaunt to Mars, for example.

In real-life money, that would have cost a massive $200 billion to bail him out (about £134.5 billion).

Here are his findings in full:

Courage Under Fire (Gulf War 1 helicopter rescue): $300k (£202k)
Saving Private Ryan (WW2 Europe search party): $100k (£67k)
Titan AE (Earth evacuation spaceship): $200b (£134b)
Syriana (Middle East private security return flight): $50k (£33.6k)
Green Zone (US Army transport from Middle East): $50k (£33.6k)
Elysium (Space station security deployment and damages): $100m (£67m)
Interstellar (Interstellar spaceship): $500b (£336b)
The Martian (Mars mission): $200b (134.6b)

As you can see, the business in Christopher Nolan’s 'Interstellar’ really ratcheted things up.

In all, it would have cost in the region of $900 billion (£606 billion) to rescue him from all his scrapes.

Compare that to the combined $729 million (£490 million) that said movies cost to make, and you’ve got to consider the economy here.

Asked by users if the Bourne movies should have been included, he explained: “No, because Matt Damon does lots of travel at his own expense (he might have lots of frequent flyer points under different identities). Or maybe it’s yes, because plenty of money is spent trying to 'bring him back’ - but the people looking for him don’t seem to be very concerned about his safety.”
