OpenStack® is written in Python. A large amount of history, context, and implication are contained in that sentence. First created in 1990, Python is a successor of many earlier open source languages, most notably Perl. It is a favorite programming language, hitting a sweet spot of stability of implementation, relative lack of cruft, mixed with ease of learning and of reading. A straightforward chunk of made-up pseudocode can be easily translated into readable Python, and most Python code can be read and understood by a developer who does not yet know the language.
