A huge spider in a lettuce packet is what arachnophobic nightmares are made of

An Australian woman has shared a terrifying Snapchat video of a huge spider crawling in her pre-packaged lettuce. It's enough to give you nightmares for a month.

Zoe Perry wrote on Facebook she found the creepy crawly in a bag of Italian Style Salad Mix that she picked up from the supermarket giant, Woolworths. "Hi Woolworths, shopping as per usual for Italian Style Salad Mix....get it home....Mum goes to open the packet and we are greeted by..." Perry wrote.

It is a bad week for supermarket lettuce. On Thursday, two Australian supermarkets, including Woolworths, were forced to recall 24 varieties of packaged lettuce after a salmonella outbreak. The Italian Style Salad Mix was not on the list, but it has enough problems on its hands.

Woolworths said Perry had been contacted and a full investigation was underway, with a food quality expert being sent to the processing facility "to minimise the chance of this happening again." Minimise... gulp.

"Woolworths takes food safety very seriously. We require our suppliers to follow clear quality control guidelines during food processing. Pre-packaged lettuce goes through an extensive process before being packaged. Our suppliers wash, blow dry, shake and visually inspect the lettuce," a spokesperson for the company said in an emailed statement.

"We immediately sent a food quality expert to the processing facility to see what additional measures can be put in place."

Don't forget to wash your lettuce real good, Australia.
