Huge Underwater Volcanoes Discovered Near Antarctica

A string of a dozen volcanoes, at least several of them active, has been found beneath the frigid seas near Antarctica, the first such discovery in that region.

Some of the peaks tower nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) above the ocean floor — nearly tall enough to break the water's surface.

"That's a big volcano. That's a very big volcano. If that was on land it would be quite remarkable," said Philip Leat, a vulcanologist with the British Antarctic Survey who led a seafloor mapping expedition to the region in 2007 and 2010.

The group of 12 underwater mountains lies south of the South Sandwich Islands — desolate, ice-covered volcanoes that rise above the southern Atlantic Ocean about halfway between South America and South Africa and erupted as recently as 2008. It's the first time such a large number of undersea volcanoes has been found together in the Antarctic region.

Leat said the survey team was somewhat surprised by the find.

"We knew there were other volcanoes in the area, but we didn't go trying to find volcanoes," Leat told OurAmazingPlanet. "We just went because there was a big blank area on the map and we had no idea what was there; we just wanted to fill in the seafloor."

    Seafloor surprise

The team did so, thanks to ship-borne seafloor mapping technology, and not without a few hair-raising adventures.

Leat said the images of the seafloor appear before your eyes on screens as the ship moves through the water. "So it's very exciting," he said. "You go along and suddenly you see the bottom start to rise up underneath you, and you don't know how shallow it's going to get."

At one point, in the dead of night, the team encountered a volcano so large it looked as though the RRS James Clark Ross, the team's research vessel, might actually crash into the hidden summit. "It was quite frightening, actually," Leat said.

The researchers stopped the ship and decided to return in daylight. The onboard instruments revealed that some of the peaks rise within 160 feet (50 meters) of the ocean's surface. [Related: The World's Biggest Oceans and Seas]

    Volcanoes confirmed

Though the peaks are largely invisible without the aid of 3-D mapping technology, scientists can tell they're volcanoes.

Leat said their conelike silhouette is a dead giveaway. "There's no other way of getting that shape on the seafloor," he said. In addition, the researchers dredged up rocky material from several peaks and found it rife with volcanic ash, lumps of pumice and black lava.

The find backed up reports from a ship that visited the area in 1962, which indicated a hidden volcano had erupted in the region.

Leat's biologist colleagues discovered some interesting creatures living in the hot-spring-like conditionsnear the underwater mountains, and news on that will be forthcoming, Leat said.

Despite the frozen, isolated conditions, Leat said the expeditions were far from boring. Quite the opposite, in fact. Each moment, a hidden world never before seen by humans unfolded before their eyes.

"It's amazing," Leat said, "and you can hardly go to bed at night because you want to see what's happening."

Why are we just now figuring this out?

I wonder if they can tell how long these volcanoes have been there or,are they still in process of developing.
      • Rich 10 mths ago
If they're currently active/erupting, then they're in the process of developing, and may some day not too far off break the surface and become islands.

        The mad scientists know.
The question is, will they disclose this info to the public?

We have known for a long time that there are volcanoes down there? Nothing new.
      • Rich 10 mths ago
I beg to differ. The fact that they've known that volcanoes are below the ocean does not mean they've known about this string of a dozen. The fact that we may, very soon be able to watch them break the surface of the water and a string of new volcanic islands being born IS new - and very, very cool.

Hey, geniuses: discovering a volcano doesn't disprove global warming. The evidence for human-caused global warming is overwhelming. The greenhouse effect has been understood for well over 100 years, and the evidence has just mounted since then.

I also hate to break it to you, but the fact that it might be colder than usual where you live is also not compelling evidence against the existence of global warming.

The climate is changing. This is an objective fact. There is a little room for debate over the size of the role that humans are playing, but there is absolutely no disputing that humans are playing SOME role.

Sometimes, scientific research is going to produce results which contradict your entrenched worldview. Mature adults adjust their worldview to conform to reality.

Teabaggers just attack the scientists who conducted the research. Absolutely pathetic. Our children are going to spit on our graves because of you morons.

Hey, Bigfoot, saying something over and over doesn't make it true. Do you have any data to back up your claim that all the evidence in support of global warming has been misinterpreted or fabricated, or do you just choose to ignore reality because it's inconvenient?

"Our children are going to spit on our graves because of you morons." - Great. You're creating additional carbon footprints to destroy the planet.

HMMMM, active volcanoes under the ice...makes ya wonder just exactly what is making the ice melt don't it?
      • Rich 10 mths ago
Um, if you read the article, you'd know that these volcanoes are hundreds of miles from the land of Antarctica. And, furthermore, what's under the ice of Antarctica, you may ask? Land, not ocean - granted, there are some bits that stick out over the water, but the vast majority of the southern polar ice cap is a huge glacial deposit of ice sitting atop a continent of land.
    • TomB  •  10 mths ago
These are not new volcanos folks. There impact has been around for a very long time. Can't blame these for melting. The ice cap down there is on land, not ocean as in the north. We are melting these from the top down, not bottom up.

Please stop being so stupid. It hurts all fo us.

Pretty soon, the volcano that was closest to the surface will create a new island. I call dibs.

Judging by the comments below many people will be shocked to find out the Earth's crust is cracked into numerous plates that are in motion with some pulling apart and creating vast underwater mountain ranges and others crashing together to create earthquakes, volcanoes and mountains. Didn't anyone have Earth Science in junior high?

      Dear Al,
Do you think active volcanoes under antarctica might contribute to ice melting?

this planet has a history longer than we can imagine, and has mysteries that we will never discover. Earth has had times where there has been no polar ice, and life even when there was much higher carbon dioxide. If we must live on a warmer planet, then we must live on a warmer planet and adapt. If humans suffer from it, then we must suffer.

I guess there aren't many people in "comment land" who could pass an adult literacy class. Most of these comments are unbelievably pathetic.

I love how whenever one of these articles everyone suddenly thinks that they have a masters level understanding of how the earth works. The way that the earth works and how it has for the last 4.5 billion years is a fact, not something contingent on which bubble you fill in when you register to vote. True modern geology and climatology are ironing out some of the wrinkles in their current modeling’s and figures, but what they observe and believe to be mostly true is not nearly as controversial within the mainstream scientific community at large as many would have you believe.

There is so much that we dont know about earth and our environment. We are so arrogant to think that we can change/fix any of it. How about we just enjoy what we have and spend our limited time here making our lives as comfortale and productive as possible.
