Hundreds killed in fire at prison in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Trapped inmates screamed from their cells as a fire swept through a Honduran prison, killing at least 300 inmates, authorities said Wednesday.

Lucy Marder, chief of forensic medicine for the prosecutor's office, said early Wednesday some 356 people on the prison roster are unaccounted for among 852 prisoners.

"The majority could be dead, though others could have suffered burns, escaped or survived," she said.

The fire broke out Tuesday night at a prison in Comayagua, a town 90 miles (140 kilometers) north of the Central American country's capital, Tegucigalpa.

Comayagua fire department spokesman Josue Garcia said he saw "horrific" scenes while trying to put out the fire, saying inmates rioted in attempts to escape. He said "some 100 prisoners were burned to death or suffocated in their cells."

"We couldn't get them out because we didn't have the keys and couldn't find the guards who had them," Garcia said.

Officials are investigating whether the fire was triggered by rioting prisoners or by an electrical short-circuit, said Danilo Orellana, head of the national prison system.

A prisoner identified as Silverio Aguilar told HRN Radio that someone started screaming, "Fire, fire," and the prisoners called for help.

"For a while, nobody listened. But after a few minutes, which seemed like an eternity, a guard appeared with keys and let us out," he said.

Hundreds of relatives rushed to Santa Teresa Hospital in Comayagua state to learn the fate of their loved ones, said Leonel Silva, fire chief in Comayagua.

Marder said 12 victims were treated there and nine more in the Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, bringing the total of injured to 21. "That's why we think the death toll will rise," she said.

Marder said it would take at least three months to identify victims, some burned beyond recognition, because DNA tests will be required.

President Porfirio Lobo declared an emergency in July 2010 in nine of the 24 prisons in Honduras. His security minister at the time called the prisons "universities of crime" that had been overwhelmed by overcrowding.

Hondouras is number 1 in workld for homicides.. Although this event seems horrific, it may be providence that so many criminals that perpetrated crimes against others met their fate.

I don't know how a prison can catch fire and burn like that. Do they have hardwood floors in that prison? I thought most prisons were made of concrete and cinderblock...

Okay if I am being 100% honest, I feel bad for the people who made small mistakes, petty crimes. If I was starving and my son was starving, I would steal food, and maybe get caught and those kind of criminals do not deserve what happened, but for any of the murderers, rapists, and such...I can't say I feel bad. Burning to death is probably the last way I would choose to go but I wonder how many of those murderers/rapists cared about their victims when they were screaming for their lives.

You know the funny thing is that while I worked at a prison in AZ for ten years, the inmates would riot and they would set the fires themselves knowing there was no way out. Of course they would then demand medical attention and new bedding, clothes, etc. I was trained to protect the saftey of the public first, staff second, inmates last in those sorts of situations and Im sorry to say, if the building is coming down, I would NOT put my life or a coworkers life on the line to save one of them. That being said, I always worked the maximum security and sex offender units. The medium and minimum yards hardly ever had riots. (minimum was typically DUI and smaller crimes)

"We couldn't get them out because we didn't have the keys and couldn't find the guards who had them," I wonder if it was a drug cartel that started it?

What materials do they use to build the prison so that it could burn so fiercly? Not concrete block and steel bars.

Everything in Central America is made with concrete. Even houses are concrete blocks. But the prisons are filled with low-life gang-bangers who kill innocent people just to initiate you into a gang. These prisons are filled with people who sets school buses on fire to send a "message" to the government to leave them alone to terrorize the populace. The toughest, nastiest neighborhoods in the USA are nothing compared to some of the places in these countries. Trust me, I am from Central America and you don't want to go there. It would not surprise me if the immates themselves set the place on fire.

I can only say that I hope God forgives them for whatever crimes they committed. Many received their hell on earth in that fire. What a terrible death for anyone.

This is truly sad. I can't imagine how terrible that was to be trapped behind bars with no hopes to try and save yourself.

I was born in Honduras and came to the states when I was 10 years old. Two things I can say about this, #1 The governments have created this cataclysm of crime by increasing poverty and not helping the people. #2 even in Dire circumstances people still have a choice to choose right from wrong. 95% percent of those prisoners chose a Gang's way to go about living life... I am sad for their loss but if they would of been positive members of society they wouldn't have had such horrible and tragic end. This people murder, rape, kill, steal from those who choose to do the right thing even though is hard.. So you are the master of your own demise.

Some pretty vicious comments here… Bet lots of these people claim to believe in God and go to Church… Then to turn around and celebrate the deaths of others… and then WISHING the deaths of others … Very Sad!

I feel bad for the families of the inmates, and the petty or innocent ones, people tend to forget not everyone in prison should be there.
    • GeeGee  •  Brooklyn, New York  •  3 mths ago
I feel sorry for the innocent ones that committed small crimes but as for the rapists and murderers, I don't feel bad for them because they had no remorse when they were committing their crimes
