    Eric Cantor's 'callous' disaster-aid refusal

The House majority leader says any relief money should be offset by spending cuts. Is he right — or is it cruel to talk accounting as a storm crashes in?

As the East Coast braces for Hurricane Irene and Virginia shakes off a mild earthquake, one of the country's most powerful Republicans, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, is vowing to prevent disaster relief money from reaching the states unless Democrats agree to budget cuts. Is this insensitive grandstanding, or is he just making sure the government doesn't spend money it doesn't have?

Cantor is putting politics ahead of victims: "Just as Republicans held the country hostage over the debt ceiling," says Michael Stickings at The Moderate Voice, "Cantor is now trying to do the same over disaster relief." Hurricane Katrina taught us that the only way to save lives and relieve suffering is to get food, shelter, and help to victims immediately. Cantor either didn't learn that lesson, or he just "doesn't care." This is "political hostage-taking with lives and livelihoods in the balance."
"Hurricane Irene, Eric Cantor, and the Republican hostage-taking politics of disaster relief"

And he's done this before:  Cantor is "callous," says Tanya Somanader at ThinkProgress, but at least he's consistent. "When Americans were struggling to recover from the deadly tornado that tore through the South in May, Cantor also demanded that any disaster relief be offset with cuts." Apparently his idea of limited government calls for public servants to "completely fail the public they serve."
"Cantor says no earthquake disaster relief for his home state unless spending is cut elsewhere"

Hold on. Cantor has a valid point: Bean-counting "in the midst of a disaster makes you look like a bit of a jerk," says Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway. But what Cantor's saying makes perfect sense. America is constantly being hit by one disaster or another, whether it's a string of tornadoes, an unexpected earthquake, or the inevitable "terrifying storm." We should budget in advance every dime of the relief we expect to need — because going "into debt every time there’s a natural disaster makes no sense whatsoever."

If Cantor has his way, as he usually does, each dollar spent to clean up and rebuild parts of Vermont, New York, North Carolina and other hard-hit states will have to be balanced by cuts to programs targeting the needy.

Sorry Eric--if you didn't complain about spending when your own party was sucking the country dry, there's no reason to take anything you say about it seriously.

Eric Cantor and his ilk are what's wrong with our country.... they want to take the country back to the dark ages so they can keep people destitute so they can control everything and grab as much money as they can.... all in the name of their false gods.

If I have a catastrophe at my home, let's say a water pipe bursts and floods my house, I have two options, fix the problem with savings or shift money for something else to pay for the immediate need. Since The United States has no savings, really just huge amounts of debt loan at this point, we should have to do the same thing. I think people get confused because they talk about the government just printing the money it needs, but it doesn't really work that way, we don't have an endless supply. And i know the other argument of just tax those that have more, but that causes a ripple effect that will negatively impact us as well. I don't feel that he is asking for anything other than for us to be responsible and figure out how to pay for this responsibly. It kind of sucks we have so many ME, ME, ME people who no longer understand the principles of responsibility and self-reliance.

Or you could take out a loan to pay for the damages. Republicans have been doing that for 30 years, and now suddenly they are concerned about debt.
      • FHDendy 9 mths ago
@Vincent, I'm not saying that the repubs don't share responsibility in the situation our country is in today, they most certainly do, but this country is a two party system and the dems are just as responsible, now everyone wants to crucify the few sensible voices coming out of Washington to help solve our financial and over spending problems, everyone just says hey "let's borrow more" or "hey let someone else pay for it", I'm sick of the blame game, I just want our country back on solid financial fundamentals that are sustainable and fair.

Anybody tries to compare a household budget to the federal government can be safely dismissed as a #$%$

because going "into debt every time there’s a natural disaster makes no sense whatsoever." - All I really needed to read

Wow, after reading these posts, it sounds like a lot of you will be supporting Ron Paul in the presidential election. He will stop all unfunded wars and bring the troops home, saving billions. He wouold issue block grants to the states to do their own recovery, no Federal involvement. And he would make Americans become self-reliant and quite looking ofr others to take care ot them.
      • A Yahoo! User 8 mths ago
He would also privatize everything. Our military is government run. And though I want the wars to end, what's really costing us is that they're privatized. Those co's can't do it as efficiently as our own guys do, and the price is killing us. In areas where water's been privatized, people get sick on it and can't afford to drink even the bad water. I'm all for fixing problems with what's in the gov., but privatizing everything is harmful! Also, many Americans are self reliant, like many of these places were BEFORE they got hurt by natural disasters. They were so self reliant that they could afford to help out others who were struck by disasters too, and they did. We as Americans in general don't look for handouts, we actually aspire to the American Dream, where we can take care of ourselves and where we actually have a chance of thriving, not where we snub out neighbors because their house burned down and now they have no place to live in the winter storms, accusing them of looking for handouts when we could be in their shoes if that fire had only caught our house instead.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
Most Americans don't want the government to help. Recovery would be faster and more efficient if government just got out of the way. All one needs to do is look at the track record of FEMA since it's inception.

        You're a nut.
      • A Yahoo! User 8 mths ago
Look at who appointed who and why, that would be a problem for ANY organization, government or private. I want my government to help me, NOT some privatized fire dept. that's main interest is making money, like not using as many fighters on my house or as much water, because their bottom line is making and saving money, NOT my life.

WOW! What a leader. My constituates can die in a storm and loose there houses an property while I an my merry band of Tea Party Butheads play another negotiateing game about what cuts can take place to offset any spending money used to help huricane victims. Is this guy for real. After just having to deal with this Idiot ruining our nations credit rating while him and his Butheads refuse to negotiate and narrowly having to default on our nations debt. Now to hear him say this is nauseating. I got an idea for this Idiot. Everyone from his district that incurs a lose do to huricane Irene line up outside his office and when he comes out make him stand there and everyone wind up and give him a good old fashioned kick in the behind. It wouldn't help pay for your looses but man would it feel good. I'd even pay $15.00 for a ticket to watch and donate it to the Huricane victims of poor unfunded Virginia fund.

      • FHDendy 9 mths ago
Ahh yes the kumbya, save the world, can't we all just get along mantra of any professional liberal. It sounds all warm and fuzzy and hey who doesn't really want all those things but the world doesn't quite work that way.
      • Doc 9 mths ago

cantor is another, living off the taxpayers, and on the take from moneyed interests, 'i got mine, up yours' hypocrite. let's cut off his taxpayer funded golden parachute and taxpayer funded healthcare, and see how he gets along! oh yeah, he's got all that lobbyist money in his pockets!
      • Doc 9 mths ago

    • PKT  •  9 mths ago
Cantor should definitely stick to his guns as should all the tea party politicians. This is in line with their philosophy and we sure don't want any TPINOs (tea party in name only).

Given the me-first attitude of the right I'll go along with the trend. I don't live on the East Coast so it's not my concern. It's their own fault anyway for not putting money away for a rainy day or a very rainy day. We all know good Americans aren't supposed to get houses they can't afford well the same logic holds for these freeloaders who built in a hurricane zone. It's their own fault. No bailouts here.

If we can't afford luxuries like disaster relief we shouldn't be able to afford any recreational pursuits like wars either. Sure it's fun to bomb things and use those billion-dollar toys but if grandma has to cut back on Social Security and Medicare and she can't look to the government for relief to repair her hurricane damaged house it's a little inconsistent that we can afford supporting puppet regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq that are going to turn their backs on us the minute we leave. I guess there is consistency somewhere in TP Republicans but it's hard to find under the layers of hypocrisy, deceit, ignorance, arrogance and blind stupidity that makes up their doctrine.
    • Pilib  •  9 mths ago
Republicans need to repay the government for their unfunded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and repay the Social Security Trust fund for their unfunded tax cut for the rich.
    • Pilib  •  9 mths ago
Virginians should remove Cantor in 2012.
