Hyperlapse from Instagram review

Hyperlapse, Instagram's latest creation, creates dynamic time-lapse video right on your phone.

Pros

Bare-bones UI: In Hyperlapse, you have only a Record button to worry about. Stage your shot, hit Record to start, and tap it again to stop. The only other feature on the display shows how long your estimated time lapse will run based on the speed setting. After you shoot your video, the app presents a slider to change the playback speed (from 1x to 12x) and the option to save or share on Facebook or Instagram.

Effortless filmmaking: Hyperlapse's algorithm does everything for you, from stabilizing the image (great if you don't have a tripod or are shooting freeform) to adjusting for lighting and increasing the speed of the time lapse. Capable of shooting up to 45 minutes of footage, the app reduces what used to be an expensive and time-consuming process to a whimsical activity.

Cons

No filter, just speed: If you're a regular Instagram user, you'd expect more customization options. But with Hyperlapse, the only filter you get is the playback speed setting. Shared videos are limited to 15 seconds, so adjust that speed to the max if you have more to show.

Outside and daytime only: Hyperlapse requires abundant light for its algorithm to work, so users hoping for indoor or nighttime footage may be out of luck.

Bottom Line

Hyperlapse has some clever tech and a powerful algorithm behind its minimal UI. The app boils down what used to be a complicated process to a few quick taps. Despite some minor shortcomings, Hyperlapse can add a little cinematic flare to your everyday videos.
