IMF presses Greece on wages, says debt deal soon

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — An IMF debt inspector says negotiations for landmark debt deals with Greece will be concluded in a "matter of days" but pressed the recession-hit country to lower employment costs and even slash the minimum wage.

The head of the International Monetary Fund's mission in Greece, Poul Thomsen, said in an interview published Wednesday that talks for a new euro130 billion ($171 billion) bailout package would be over "very soon."

That deal is linked to an agreement with private creditors to accept losses on Greek bonds, which will cut euro100 billion off the country's national debt.

"Yes, it's a matter of days," Thomsen was quoted as saying by the Athens daily Kathimerini. "The discussions for the (new) program will be concluded very soon."

Thomsen insisted wages in Greece remain too high, and that was hurting the country's competitiveness. He urged the government to consider cutting the minimum wage of euro750 ($988) gross pay per month.

Greek unions and employers are to resume negotiations on Thursday in an effort to cut labor costs, but both sides are already in agreement that the minimum wage and basic private sector pay should not be affected, warning such a move would only deepen the country's recession.

Greece and its creditors are anxious to close the new rescue deals ahead of a March 20 Greek bond repayment worth euro14.5 billion ($19.1 billion) that threatens the country with bankruptcy and the eurozone with a major crisis.

They want to lower basic wages below 500 Euro monthly or 6.000 Euro annually in the private sector!! That sounds reasonable, doesn't it? Of course not! Save the people, not the banks!

What world do you live in? Not on this planet, i am sure. Banks have been running the planet for hundreds of years and will continue to do so. Unfortunately.

The IMF is at it again. The worst thing Greece could do is lower its minimum wage and cut workers' wages. That only shrinks the economy and makes the debt problem worse, as well as drastically lowering the standard of living, depresses businesses (because of lowered consumer demand) and retards growth, which along with a planned default, is the only way out of this for Greece. The IMF is more concerned about squeezing out the cash for the big time lenders than it is about fixing the problem. It always is.

According to "International Business Times" in an article dated 11-09-2007 (The most recent I could find.) the average chines workers wage had increased to $250 a month Is that the level the banks aspire to have Greeks work at? Maybe less? Lets not forget the new higher taxes as part of the austerity.

Are the banks actually helping anything besides their own profits and the enslavement of the Greece working class? Personally I haven't read anything about Greece's debt getting reduced yet, only about how the newer and newer and tougher austerity measures are continually failing to bring the results the banks publicly want. As I watch (It's like a train wreck, you just can't look away.) I just keep seeing new tougher austerity measures, followed by reduced GDP and reduced income followed by reduced taxes collected followed by missed budget targets set by those requiring the tough new austerity measures, followed by another round of talks, followed by tougher austerity measures. Anybody noticing this cycle too?

they have an opportunity to set the example for the world...default, and reorganize their monetary system doing away with fractional reserve banking...let the chips fall where they may.
    • psunami  •  3 mths ago
they would be better of to default and tell the IMF to go fkthmslves!

He urged the government to consider cutting the minimum wage of euro750 ($988) gross pay per month.

      that's $5.74 per hour - DOESN'T EVEN MAKE MINIMUM non-living US wages

and euroland is much more expensive

      ain't austerity great

Austerity is needed to change the course of the detruction that was caused by irresponsible socialism.

If the troika REALLY wanted to HELP Greece, they would press MORE for non-wage budget cuts, court reforms, constitutional reforms to make graft punishable swiftly, and focus on reducing the number of parliament members who cost taxpayers and budget at least 20 million per person, (above the table). Breaking the backs of underdogs with increased taxes and decreasing pensions is not only undemocratic but does not solve the root of the problem either:

      * Bankrupt corrupt party cronies that caused the debt are sitting in the Greek Parliament or in top Ministry posts and are called on to solve the same fiscal bankruptcy that they caused.

As much as the people are fond of the new Prime Minister, he seems unable to deal with the party pressure of a HUGE bureaucracy working against him. The bankrupt media, rather than focussing on the core of the problem above, are focusing on the social welfare problems increasing because of unimaginably high taxation.

It really seems that the troika is trying to break the backs of Greek banks as savings are drawn out to pay off taxes. NOT all in Greece are tax evaders, particularly those in the private sector. The biggest tax evaders are those politicians and their high ranked ministry cronies who profited enormously from German and American, and other European companies in exchange for public work projects. Perhaps these same companies should be forced to whistleblow……..

      Politicians are in politics.
      Politics = political ticks
      Ticks are blood-suckers
      Politicians = bloodsuckers.
There are lies, damned lies and politician’s lies.
People, don't believe the eu leaders.
The situation in all the eurozone members and in all the eu countries is a total disaster.
If you don't want to become bankrupt get rid of your euros.
It is a useless currency not worth the paper it is printed on.
The metal in the coins is worth more than their face value.
People, send an e-mail to all your friends telling them about wanting to leave the eu and to put pressure for a referendum and tell them to send the e-mail to all their friends who in turn will send it to all their friends.
This will have a snowballing effect and either the politicians listen and scrap the eu or they will be finished.
      • JoPee 3 mths ago
And what currency would you like them to use,if not the euros?
      • Samantha 3 mths ago
Their own old currencies and not the crap euro.

The IMF is the international version of the Federal Reserve....it is being set up to replace the Federal Reserve as part of a new world reserve currency and a world monetary system. Go to the IMFs own website, they reveal much of the plan themselves.

IMF demands cutting the minimum wage which is about $6.80/hr based upon a 35 hr week? Since when do these a**holes who caused the problem get the right to dictate to a country it's wages? This is the global agenda of the IMF/World Bank/US/UK Banksters and it ain't gonna fly. But this IMF/World Bank/US/UK Media keeps spouting gibberish journalism with non-sequetors. The Euro is not going down no matter how low the IMF/World Bank/US/UK Credit Agencies rate Europe because they are sovereign countries with their own investors who will buy their bonds. IMF/World Bank/US/UK Twits are quaking in their boots...
      • Anthony C 3 mths ago
They gave away soveriegnty when they joined the EU!
      • Sandy 3 mths ago
The EU is a confederation not a state so your statement is false. Why would any circumstance allow a bank to demand anything other than money? And if the banks or the IMF or the World Bank sell you a purposely created defective product why should they be given any money? Sorry but banks, like any other business takes risks which are theirs alone. Others, be they people or countries, need to protect themselves from fraud and crime which the banks and corporations have created. First punishment to chiseling business practices, is loss of business, next is jail. Sorry, but banks are not gods or supreme beings or any other entity above the law or above the rules of capitalism which suffer the consequences of business practices.

Let's enslave Greece. But the Greeks have themselves to blame on this one. This is a disaster for democracy and for Europe.
      • Anthony C 3 mths ago
This is a failure of socialist ideals, and the lack of personal responsibility that comes with them!
      • john 3 mths ago
I wish you knew what you were talking about. Greece is not socialist. It may not be your choice of free enterprise but it is not socialist. The government does not own the means of production and in fact right now the government actually does not even own that much any more. They are a democracy. But you are right about lack of personal responsibilty, but that's always easy to point out about others.

People, let’s take the example of what the North African people in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, Syria and Yemen and other countries did and are doing. Let all the people throughout Europe REVOLT against their eu obsequious lackey leaders and against the eu.
Let us DESTROY the eu and its petty dictators and their dream of a united states of Europe.
They are as much dictators as the ex-North African dictators.
RISE AND DESTROY THE EU AND CLAIM BACK YOUR INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM FROM THE EU AND ITS PETTY DICTATORS.
