Immigration debate intensifies in GOP race

WASHINGTON (AP) — Neither Rick Perry nor Mitt Romney can claim conservative purity on illegal immigration — and now both must deal with it.

Illegal immigration has emerged as a defining issue with remarkable staying power in a GOP presidential race that was expected to be primarily focused on the nation's struggling economy.

The heated clashes over illegal immigration between the two Republican presidential rivals in this week's debate, coupled with renewed calls for a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border by their opponents, made clear the issue isn't going away. It's a major fault line between Perry and Romney as they court a Republican primary electorate that generally takes a hardline view against people who are in the country illegally.

At every turn, Perry, the Texas governor, has been forced to defend his signing of a law that allowed some illegal immigrants to get in-state college tuition. And now Romney is having to answer for the fact that some groundskeepers who had worked on his lawn were in the country illegally.

"Mitt, you lose all of your standing from my perspective because you hired illegals in your home, and you knew about it for a year," Perry told the former Massachusetts governor at Tuesday's debate in Las Vegas. "And the idea that you stand here before us and talk about that you're strong on immigration is, on its face, the height of hypocrisy."

Romney countered, "Rick, I don't think that I've ever hired an illegal in my life" and challenged his rival to show him the facts.

It was a preview of what Republicans can expect to hear in the coming weeks as the Jan. 3 leadoff Iowa caucuses inch closer, with Romney and Perry emerging as the two candidates with the best chances of winning the nomination. They're arguably the only Republicans with the money and organization necessary to go the distance.

Even so and in hopes of gaining traction, their rivals are playing to the part of the GOP electorate that values a secure border with Mexico above all else when it comes to immigration policy.

In recent days, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has pledged to build two fences back to back along the 2,000-mile border. And businessman Herman Cain called for an electrified fence that could kill people trying to cross illegally.

For months now, immigration concerns have followed presidential contenders to town hall meetings from Nevada to Iowa to New Hampshire. And in some ways, immigration has shaped the increasingly bitter Republican nomination fight more than any other issue, particularly in a crowded field where the conservative candidates have more in common than not. And while conservative voters may be driving immigration chatter on the campaign trail, the candidates are stoking voter passions when given the opportunity.

"I'm not surprised that immigration is playing as big a role as it is," said Kevin Smith, a likely New Hampshire Republican gubernatorial candidate who has watched the candidates face repeated questions about the topic on the campaign trail. "This issue plays very well with Republican primary voters."

    And it's clear they're listening.

Perry's sudden drop in the polls was largely attributed to weak debate performances involving his support for the Texas law. He suggested that Republicans who oppose the policy were heartless. And Romney fueled the tuition criticism every chance he got.

But Perry tried to neutralize the attacks this week. The outspoken Texan raised new questions at the debate about Romney's use of a landscaping company that employed illegal immigrants at his suburban Boston home several years ago.

For a moment, it looked as though Perry and Romney may come to blows as they debated the issue, with Romney at one point putting his hand on Perry's shoulder as the conversation began to heat up.

"The American people want the truth," Perry demanded. "They want to hear you say that you knew you had illegals working at your ..."

Romney cut in: "Would you please wait? Are you just going to keep talking, or are you going to let me finish with my — what I have to say?"

For Romney, it was a frustrating return to an issue that played out in his 2008 presidential campaign.

At that time, and again Tuesday night, he said he had little control over whether a landscaping company he legally hired had illegal immigrants on the payroll. But the exchange provided one of the few moments in this presidential campaign in which the usually poised Romney showed flashes of anger.

That anger was apparent in campaign rhetoric from both sides the day after the debate.

"Gov. Perry is desperate to deflect from his liberal immigration record," Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said, calling Perry's launching of "a personal and untruthful attack" on Romney "unpresidential."

But don't expect Perry to back down from an issue that may have fueled his strongest debate performance.

Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan said, "Mr. Romney has been demagoguing and distorting these immigration and border control issues for months now." Sullivan argued that Romney was "exposed as someone who had illegal immigrants working in his lawn and cleaning his tennis court."

Sullivan would not say whether Perry might exploit the issue in television advertising, but he hinted that Romney has only seen the beginning of the new criticism.

There is danger is pushing too hard on immigration.

Polling suggests the issue may help the candidates score political points with Republican primary voters but could alienate the ballooning Hispanic population or hurt the candidates among independents in a general election matchup against President Barack Obama.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina seized on the issue Wednesday.

"Romney's been taking hard-right positions on the campaign trail on immigration. He didn't object to having undocumented workers working for him because it's illegal; he objected because he thought it would hurt his political career," Messina said.

To me, this is a very important issue.
The reason: While no-one knows exactly how many are here. The border patrol and other agencies put the figures at more than 40 million with half of them children.
They are enrolled in our public ( taxpayer funded ) schools. They are living in ( tax funded ) public assisted houseing. It only takes one legal, qualified, adult to get assistance, then a whole family can move in. They do not go to doctors, yet all community hospitals are full of them every Fri and Sat night getting free health care from band aids to asprin.
      .
We are constantly raiseing taxes on legal American workers and reducing services because of the ever growing burden of the free loading illegal aliens.

John, protests on our govt actions and inactions are coming up next after wall street. I know our citizens are tired of this nonsense and we are tired of being controlled by these tyrants.

When I hear a candidate state they will implement mandatory E-Verify with jailtime for non-compliance I will take strong notice. When I hear that same candidate talk about amending the portions of the 14th amendment to eliminate "anchor babies," I will check out his or her website. When the same candidate proposes that all immigrants and their dependents be inelligible for public assistance for 10 or 20 years. I will volunteer to work for his or her campaign and contribute what little I can afford to see they get elected.

Bachmann and Cain are living in a fantasy world. Just drive from Brownsville, Texas to El Paso, Texas, which is about half the distance they propose fencing, to see how ridiculous thiss fencing idea is. E-Verify is the answer. No job, no illegal immigration. It's not like they come here for political or religious freedom.

Purity has nothing to do with it.

      It's simple, illegal means illegal.

Read the immigration laws of cesspool Mexico! Ask "ILLEGALS" from Central America how they are treated by the Mexicans! The U.S. owes "ILLEGAL" Mexicans NOTHING! Enforce the laws of our country! Spineless polititians! Bush did nothing for 8 years, Obama sends Holder to Sue Arizona and Alabama for upholding the law of the land while he does nothing! Grow a pair and start getting serious deporting 12 million "ILLEGAL" Mexicans, and any other "ILLEGAL ALIEN!

enjoyed your comment.i agree 100 percent. what do you think of each state using its power to mobilize its states natl. guard and reservist units along its boarder. train as usual and aid to the boarder officers that on there now. ther is the additional forces. we pay for their training any way . why not let them work on the boarders. allow each state to fund new post as it sees fit.

Purity and virginity are not required among prospective presidential candidates. The real question is, how do they intend to terminate the existing illegal immigration problem and future illegal immigration using existing law if elected? For example, none of the candidates have spoken of using or expanding E-Verify to Mandatory E-Verify covering not only employment but banking, housing, credit, social services, medical services and education. Further, there are no words from the candidates on holding business or banks responsible for supporting illegal alien populations. These personal attacks are little more than silly and irrelevant.
      • Dr. Foo 7 mths ago
Yeah, you got it right. Why don't they talk about E-Verify? because the politicians are secretly (or not so secretly) owned by the businesses that don't want E-Verify. They are full of hot air about enforcement but don't take the simple step that would reduce the problem without any additional resources being spent. If they can't be hired, they'll leave.

which one, the ones on the illegals, or the fat cats hiring them?

Unfortunately, we can't compete with the hundreds of millions of dollars in drug cartel money flowing into Congress, judges and law enforcement.

To many potential votes to be lost if laws are enforced.

What is easier, tracking down 12 million illegals who talk and sound like citizens, or go after the employers, who have a fixed address. You want to end the problem, that is the direction to go.

Good post, Sarge...as long as we are prepared to deal with the economic consequences that Alabama is already encountering...veggies rotting in the fields, construction teams without the man power, prices going up, etc etc...

If that is what the people want, let them have it. Then they can cry that they didn't know.

We dont need to change immigration - we just need to enforce it. Legal immigration works just fine. No one has a problem with it. It s the ILLEGAL immigration that is the problem. Some estimates say that as much as 30% of the country is here illegaly. Even if the real number is only half that...its a problem that needs to be addressed and NOW. Is it any wonder that all of our wonderful social programs fall flat on their face? When you determine the contribution per person based on registered legal population then have as much as 30% illegal population taking from those programs without putting anything in...do you really need a calculator to figure out why the programs ran out of money??? Come one...its not that hard to figure out...

Our laws clearly state if your in this country illegally you will be deported. So the debate should be "Why hasn't the government done its job"
    • Michelle  •  Durham, United States  •  7 mths ago
As long as you've got business owners willing to 'bribe' our 'great' elected officials to look the other way while business owners/farmers, etc., continue to hire ILLEGALS, you'll have this problem until the end of time unfortunately. ICE & our 'great' gov't need to prosecute business owners to the fullest extent of the law, plus fines. But that won't happen - all a business owner has to do is threaten to shut down the business & move to another country that has lower taxes, less regulations, and doesn't worry about who's 'legal', & who's not 'legal'. Once that threat has been made to a gov't official, they'll bend over backwards, letting that business owner break every regulation/rule in the book, and let them hire ILLEGALS, no matter what it costs we LEGAL USA taxpayers in jobs, etc. Not to mention the other countries such as Mexico, China, etc., using leverage to threaten our 'great' gov't officals that if they try to deport ILLEGALS, our national debt will be payable & due. Bottom line - we have no leaders that have any moral courage - they're ALL(relieorats, dumborats, idiorats, tea party rats & the prezorat) afraid; they're all cowards who don't know how to stand up to these bullies. And this next election? It won't matter if its a Dumborat or an Relieorat that gets elected - the only qualification they'll have is that they (1) know how to rip off the LEGAL USA taxpayers & (2) behave as cowards to those they should stand up to.

Illegal immigration is ALL about the economy. It is about jobs and who has them. Meanwhile In our country both parties refuse to make E-Verify mandatory. Both parties vote for huge numbers of guest visa workers. Both parties agreed to allow Mexican trucks to haul anyplace in the U.S. Both parties are pushing for more NAFTA style trade agreements. Both parties are giving tax breaks for outsourcing jobs. Both parties are owned by the multinationals. A 50 million man march on and occupation of Washington DC is the only thing they might understand.

      Simple 101

      illegal immigration

Rewarding poor or illegal behavior has been just one of many (USA stupid moves)
Millions & Millions of immigrants have followed the Law and became USA Citizens.

To suggest that individuals that have broken the Law; be rewarded in any way dishonors the USA justice system and the Millions that followed those Laws.

Building higher fences makes little sense if we are unable or unwilling to enforce the current laws.

Use these tax payer dollars for enforcement of the current Laws.
    • JasonR  •  7 mths ago
Romney hired a company without checking the legal status of everyone working there? Has everyone out there checked the legal status of their dry cleaners? People serving them food? Driving their cabs? Perry is making a losing argument here...
    • Big E  •  7 mths ago
Rick Perry fully supports illegal immigration. One third (1/3) of the entire mexican population has moved to the US. Yexas is overrun with mexicans. Texas school student bodies are more than 50% mexican. And among the slowest scholastically in the USA.
    • carlie  •  7 mths ago
This shouldn't even be an issue. We need a candidate who will put Americans first. Send all illegals back to their country of origin. That includes all the anchor babies as well. No way should one cent of tuition money go to them. I would work to get any candidate elected who puts Americans first and will work to enforce the current immigration laws.

We are headed for destruction...Another civil war. When the government turns against its
own citizens as it is doing now, nothing good can happen. To give one group (Illegals) a
free pass to break the laws and then reward them for doing so while telling ALL the other
groups they must stay the course (Follow/Abide by the laws or face the consequences) is
insane. Just think about all the money (billions) being spent on illegals (Justice system,
medical, education, etc.) could have been going to our own citizens. Bottom line, our own
leaders are telling ALL the other groups of people, you are not important to us, the illegals
      are!
    • Sacred17  •  7 mths ago
I will vote for whoever decides enough is enough with the mexican invaders. Enforce the law! Send them home! Stop the yearly attempts at amnesty and the numerous dream acts. America for American's. Our schools are packed, we should be billing mexico.

Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime. It negatively affects the unemployment rate, wages people earn, taxes and fees people pay, classroom sizes, quality and cost of education, health care insurance premiums, automobile insurance premiums, utility bills, prison populations, public safety, the environment, government debts, and the list goes on and on. I have no respect for someone who breaks into the country illlegally or an American who wants to profit financially or politically from that person being here.
