    India tests nuclear-capable short-range missile

    NEW DELHI (AP) — India successfully test-fired a short-range, nuclear-capable missile on Monday, the Defense Ministry said.

    The Prithvi missile was fired from a testing range in Chandipur in Orissa state and hit its target in the Bay of Bengal with high accuracy, Defense Ministry spokesman N. Ao said.

    The surface-to-surface missile has a range of 220 miles (350 kilometers) and can carry a warhead weighing up to 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms).

    "The flight test of the Prithvi missile met all the mission objectives and was a perfect textbook launch," Ao said.

    The army already deploys Prithvi missiles but they are regularly test-fired to hone their accuracy and speed. India also is developing other missiles, including the medium-range Agni and Akash missiles, the anti-tank Nag, the ship-launched Dhanush missile and the supersonic Brahmos missile, designed jointly with Russia.

    India's missiles are mostly intended for any confrontation with rival Pakistan. Both South Asian neighbors routinely test missiles and Monday's launch was unlikely to aggravate tensions.

    The countries normally inform each other before carrying out long-distance missile tests. It was not immediately clear whether Pakistan was told about Monday's exercise.

      India is a good friend of the US. How many other countries that are poor seem to get by on their own? India isn't out there demanding financial support from the US. The Indian people are intelligent, well-educated, friendly to the US, mostly english speaking and they have a population over 1 billion - about the same as China. They are a great trading partner to the US and one day will likely rival China as an exporter to the US.

      my take from this story "india performed a routine test of a regularly issued military missile, but we hope to raise the specter of impending doom by labeling it "nuclear", though only an idiot of the lowest order would launch a nuke to hit within 220 miles of where he stands"

      It's amazing how far and how much money humans spend on ways of killing each other. Could you imagine what we could accomplish in ONE year if we all got along. Too bad religious differences will always prevent that from happening.

        I respect your thought but what India is doing is out of compulsion and is not due to the religious difference. Unlike USA, India is geographically situated next to a country in its west that exports terrorism as state policy and has a communist bully in the east, which has a insatiable hunger for land and resources. While west is busy in safeguarding its own interest around the world, Indians can't sit idle and wait for the west to listen to its plight. Indians have been any way screaming at top of their lungs for past 20 years of all the double faced game Pakistan is playing. Now that the people of USA are gradually waking up, realizing the truth about Pakistan as they are getting the taste of same medicine.

        If I have to remind the you and all the folks who consider that India should spend the money to improve infrastructure and the status of its people, that India conducted its first nuclear test in 1974 but didn't develop any nuclear armaments of delivery vehicle until mid/late 90s. This is when the Indian govt through intelligence inputs found that Chinese are proliferating nuclear technology and helping Porkistanis build their nukes, with additional help from North Korea on the missile technology, all the while USA/CIA looked in different direction and ignoring the fact that Porkistanis are using the US resources (like C-130 loaned to them) to transfer the tech.

India has pulled themselves out of total backwardness to being one of the world's largest economies and a technical powerhouse. They did all this with a democratic government.       Guys, Dont confuse with the bad mouthing paki trolls with false names posing as Americans. Believe me, although I live in Delhi, but I keep visiting US and have many American friends. With my experience I can say that most of the americans are well mannered, polite and modest. They share good intentions for any peaceful country and its citizens...... the guys saying bad words for India and Indians are most likely paki trolls ...just bypass them, its good that they are releasing thier religious frustations here rather thn wearing suicide vests like the likes of them.
