Indian Billboard Mistakes Morgan Freeman For Mandela

Coimbatore – Actor Morgan Freeman’s face was mistaken for that of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, on a billboard dedicated to the freedom-fighter in a southern Indian town, Coimbatore.

The billboard was erected in memory of Mandela, who passed away in his Houghton home on 5 December.
“We should be proud that we were part of an era when they lived,” read the billboard’s message in Tamil.

But instead of Mandela’s face portrayed on the sign, Freeman’s loomed large above smaller images of other world figures, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, and Mahatma Gandhi.

A cloth merchant who paid for the board, Chandrashekhar, said the mistake was made by the designer.
“We will replace it with the correct picture of Mandela,” he said.

Chandrashekhar said he did not know how the mistake was made.

Freeman played Mandela in the 2009 film, Invictus, based on South Africa winning the Rugby World Cup in 1995.

India declared five days of national mourning for Mandela, and was viewed as a ‘true Gandhian’ by the country’s leaders.
