Hacker says to release full Norton Antivirus code on Tuesday

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A hacker who goes by the name of 'Yama Tough' threatened Saturday to release next week the full source code for Symantec Corp's flagship Norton Antivirus software.

"This coming Tuesday behold the full Norton Antivirus 1,7Gb src, the rest will follow," Yama Tough posted via Twitter.

In the past week Yama Tough has released fragments of source code from Symantec products along with a cache of emails. The hacker says all the data was taken from Indian government servers.

Great reporting. Everything one would possibly want to know is in this eight sentence story. How about explaining what this means to the average slob who is using Norton? This is almost as concise as his six sentence history of the Roman Empire cira 1000BC to 900AD.

Why? I have never understood the mentality of people that do this. Especally if it is a detriment to the people of one's own country that make a living there. Is this the kind of world they want ?

That's what they get for outsourcing the code to a country that puts security as an afterthought.

I wish they would have hacked Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe want me to "upgrade" the program about every two days. Java is a close second.

Some Governments require software vendors to provide source code so they can ensure the software is not used to spy on them. In this case, the Indian Government required Symantec to provide it’s source code so India could prove Symantec had no back door functionality that the U.S. or others could use to monitor activity in India...
Vendors must provide the source code to do business in the country.
Sadly, they couldn’t keep their own servers secure from Indian Activist Hackers.

I find the comments more informative than the article itself.

I consider Symantec worse than a virus

Norton and McAfee both are like viruses themselves, hiding little parts of themselves all over in different places on your computer. Very hard to totally eliminate without wiping your hard drive. In fact, wiping and re-installing everything is probably faster in most cases. Sad, but true.

I don't understand what this article is trying to say....Are those who own and use Norton at risk or are they releasing the program to thers for free? I agree that this article is incomplete and needs more information!

Why trust a security suite if the producer can't even keep it's own software secure?

i recently took a lot of software off my computer, and i can say that symantec has made removing its software very difficult! try it for yourself. even when i thought it was all gone, messages kept popping up. scary.

So, apearently, I'm out of touch with the rest of the world, because I still use Norton. It was already on my computer when I bought it. I do hate it. I keep getting pop -ups from Norton to do this or that, and I keep having to "x" out of them.

Outsourcing. Nothing like screwing over your customers to save a few dollars.
