Indian inquiry confirms unmarked graves in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) โ€” Hundreds of unmarked graves in Kashmir hold more than 2,000 bullet-riddled bodies that may include innocent victims, despite police claims that they were militants fighting Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan territory, according to an Indian government report.

The report โ€” following a three-year investigation launched amid allegations of rights abuses by the army, paramilitary and police โ€” is the first official acknowledgment that civilians killed in the two-decade conflict may have been buried in unmarked graves.

It stops short of confirming that suspicion, long alleged by rights groups, but says "there is every possibility that ... various unmarked graves at 38 places of north Kashmir may contain the dead bodies of locals."

Previously, officials have insisted that all the bodies were of militant fighters, as claimed by police when they were handed over to villages for burial.

The report says 2,156 unidentified bodies were found in single and mass graves in three northern mountainous regions, while 574 other bodies found in the graves have been identified as local residents.

The findings by the Jammu-Kashmir State Human Rights Commission are likely to deepen cynicism in restive Kashmir, where anti-India sentiment runs deep and most people want independence or merger with neighboring Pakistan.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars since 1947 for control of the territory, which is divided between them. India accuses Pakistan of arming and training rebel fighters, but Pakistan says it only offers moral and diplomatic support for their cause.

Rebel groups began fighting in 1989 against Indian rule, and more than 68,000 people have been killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian crackdowns. Most have been civilians.

Rights groups have said some 8,000 people have disappeared, and accused government forces of staging gunbattles to cover up killings. The groups also say suspected rebels have been arrested and never heard from again.

The state government has countered that most of the missing were likely Kashmiri youths who crossed into Pakistan for weapons training.

In 2008, a rights group reported unmarked graves in 55 villages across the northern regions of Baramulla, Bandipore and Handwara, after which researchers and other groups reported finding thousands of single and mass graves without markers.

Indian officials set up the commission to investigate and also began a separate police investigation, the findings of which have yet to be released.

The commission's 17-page report also urged DNA profiling to identify the bodies, saying the matter should be "investigated thoroughly by an impartial agency."

The head of a local rights group welcomed the report as vindicating its research into the graves.

"Security agencies accused us of maligning the image of the armed forces," said Pervez Imroz of the International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice. Now, "we will seek judicial intervention if the government fails to implement the report's recommendations."

Who said Hindus are peaceful? India is a nuclear power. It had half a dozen wars with neighbors. It occupy some land from all neighbors. It train the armies of Iran, Iraq, African countries and Afghanistan then sell ammunition to all of them. India itself spent $80billion in importing arms alone this year. All at the cost of it's own poor__ 90% of it populations. Yes they are good in Yuga, Call Center services, changing Hindu names to Christians for jobs and business, also in harshly responding in hoards to any news about poor & in-distress neighbors.

With heavy funding of our media and U.S. Congressmen by India there was no chance these news would have come out.

For 60 years India has refused to allow a UN-demanded referendum in Kashmir to decide if they should be independent, part of Pakistan, or part of India.

A lot of posters here seem sure Kashmir would choose India. Well then why doesn't India allow the vote and let the Kashmiri people decide their fate?

There's been a brutal police and military presence in Kashmir for years. It clearly looks like an unwanted occupation rather than a happy integral part of India.

India kashmir is the begining of the alqaeda. Alqaeda had infiltrated in form of Mujaihideen for past 21 years. This came to light when the indian airlines flight was hijacked by the osama terrorists.Kashmiri militants were released to taliban in kandahar , afghan to secure the release of 300 indian passangers. This militants subsequently became involved in the world trade center destruction. They also involved in the killing of daniel pearl, benazir bhutto. Indian army has been fighting alqaeda in kashmir for past 25 years.ISI constantly poisoned the minds of thousands of youths who became militants. Millions of hindus have been driven out of kashmir as refugees. This is similar to Darfur in sudan which has gone unreported. So more than millions of people have lost in afghan, paksithan, indian kashmir fighting for and against alqaeda.

We always want to look for bad guys and then their enemies automatically become saints or good guys for us. This is what we do with Palestinian and Israelis. This is what we did with Soviet Union (bad) and Mujahideen (good). This is what we assume to be the case with Pakistan (bad) and India (good). Fact is that both sides can be bad. Pakistanis have trained militants, and that's bad, but in the cover of fighting militnts, Indians have slaughtered Kashmiris (just as bad) and driven more of them towards joining militancy.

Majority of people in Kashmir wants to stay with India because they have acknowledged that only India can provide much prosperious and peaceful life. Who wants to live in Pakistan where no one have security including their leaders? These People may have been killed by Pakistan trained islamic terrorists groups who oppose Indian rule in Kashmir.
