Indian PM resists pressure on Iran sanctions

NEW DELHI (AP) — India's prime minister resisted pressure from the United States and the European Union to curtail its trade with Iran over the country's suspected nuclear weapons program, insisting Friday that diplomacy was the best way to deal with the concerns.

Washington and its allies want energy-starved India to curtail its dependence on Iranian oil, which New Delhi imports in immense quantities. Western countries believe Iran is using its oil revenues to develop nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists its nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes.

"There have been problems with regard to Iran's nuclear program," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told reporters after meeting with the president of the European Union. "We sincerely believe that this issue can be and should be resolved by giving maximum scope to diplomacy."

EU President Herman Van Rompuy said he would ask Singh to use India's leverage to help bring Iran back to the negotiating table.

Iran is India's second-largest crude oil supplier after Saudi Arabia and according to media reports imports 550,000 barrels a day. Sanctions on Iran had long made that trade difficult, because Indian oil importers had to scramble to find banks willing to handle transactions with Tehran.

But last week, Iran's ambassador to India said the two countries had reached an agreement to make the trade easier. Under the agreement, India will make 45 percent of its payments for Iranian crude oil in rupees and pay the rest by investing in Iranian infrastructure projects. Iran, meanwhile, will use those rupees to buy Indian goods, including machinery, iron, steel, minerals and automobiles, said Ambassador Seyed Mehdi Nabizadeh.

A large delegation of Indian trade officials will travel to Tehran later this month to help Iran identify Indian goods and services that it can import.

If glove fits wear it. Washington should NOT enforce its conditions on other nations. As its said , mind your own business & not interfear others affairs.

ManOhMan. I'm nauseated by some illiterate comments . Insulting, offending and racist craps are their arguments....e.g. comments of A Real American? No, A Real Hillbilly is more exact.
These days, not only Russia, China but India and Brazil are now nations with strong will and sane assertiveness. If we Americans still dream of the old days the US will follow the USSR and vanishes. Why the US can't accept the fact that other nations are now as self confident as the US and become richer than the US? The powerful Byzantine lasted 1000 years and were crushed because of its blindness to the reality. UK lasted more than 200 years. The US? Probably 100 years if this blindness continues.

India will go her way as China already did. Brazil will follow... who will be the next? Japan? Indonesia? Free after Gorbachov: He who won't accept the reality the world will punish him.

Real American is a Pakistani. Check his other comments on different posts. And we all know that being a Paki, he is too ashamed to share his name.

Looks like diplomacy is overshadowed by $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. The West is going to settle for a watered down agreement and hail it as a groundbreaking peace agreement. Then war.

Doesn't India have nuclear weapons themselves?
Why is the EU and America only interested in placing sanctions on Iran and not on other countries with nuclear arsenals as well? I though they were concerned about the threat nuclear weapons pose on global security, shouldn't they warn other countries as well even the US and Israel?
      • L0L 3 mths ago
Chris, the EU and US had sanctions on India in the 1990s. They were still able to develop nuclear warheads and expand their economy. Today, they've grown too large economically and militarily to be treated like Iran.

It's amazing what kind of respect nuclear weapons can provide.
      • Laswi 3 mths ago
To date the worst ever destruction with nuclear weapons has been done by US in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Therefore, before asking other countries to stop nuclear programs, US must stop their programs first. Even without using nuclear weapons, the US has done the biggest destruction all over the world.
      • Truth hurts 3 mths ago
@Chris.... Looking at history.... it is all favourable to India.
India never favoured CTBT ... They have taken a clear stand on no nuclear weapons till the whole world signs off it. Instead, Korea or Iran, they have signed and sneaked out.

India and Pakistan were banned at almost the same time with all the enforcements. Result? Pakis playing prostituting relationship with USA where India stood on its own. USA spending billlions on a country trying to begg where another country standing on its own.

U.S raise sanction to Iran is not to stop the nuclear program. It's mainly to kid developing counties like India and China so the local financial problem is less outstanding around the world. So the Fed can keep the print press without devaluate the dollar.

Years ago, Russia was the only country that opposed the American way. Now look. China and apparently India and many Muslim countries are beginning to see the danger of American hegemony now too. These countries hold well over have the global population.

Conservative Americans and Americans who don't care about anything but themselves and who watch American Idol weekly like to call opposition evil empires. Think about this. Think really hard. Reagan started the nasty deficit spending by trying to finish off the Soviets. Bush made Muslims the new enemy and drove the debt higher. Obama now has China and Iran in the gunsights. You really think we can afford to fight the half the planet?

This isn't just fending off the Soviets anymore. We are talking three or four billion people opposing the American way. At what point will we sit back and see that we are no longer this beacon of freedom that we are all told about in middle school.

I agree with your statement but this has nothing to do with America, it has everything to do with Zionism that is in complete control of American Foreign Policy.
      • charlie 3 mths ago
That may be somewhat true as to the Middle East. But the communists and to a lesser degree other countries have objected to how American capitalists treat third world nations. Now that we are adding pre-emptive wars into the mix, our list of enemies is growing is my point.

No. Dont bark on the ill fetched bravery. What about the corruption that you have never ever rooted down? You are slaves of your own systems. Yes.... west have failed policies... but somehow, time and again, they have proved that you always have to follow them. You boast about the riches that Brits have looted... what did you do with that? Till date, you all use every silly thing invented from the west. Did you ever ever d anything that helped the betterment of a comman man? Jus blood sucking society. Disappear...

Iran is a sovereign nation. As such, we need to keep the heck outta their affairs. We are hated the world over for our failed foreign policies of the last 100 years (and not because of our way of life, as Dubya so often said when he was idiot in charge).

Only the rednecks hails for war...China (1.3 bil.), Russia (0.143 bil.) and now India (1.2 bil.) combined a population of roughly 2.643 billion people against the sanction imposed by the US (0.32 bil.), Israel (0.007 bil.) and the minion EU (0.5 bil.) together 0.727 billion. A ratio of 3.64 against the sanction. Also Democracy means the majority rules and is right and the minority MUST comply. Any Question?

Seeing some comments I see some Americans are really stupid... If you don't know why...you probably don't know that Corporations Control the US Politics and most of these Corporations are based on Oil and Weapons. So a war for them is a Business opportunity.

India has made a courage independent decision on this conflict..it might make our Jewish bosses mad...but..hey..they don't 'own' this world yet.
