    IndyCar eliminates double-file restarts at 3 ovals

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — IndyCar officials will eliminate double-file restarts this season at three ovals — Indianapolis, Texas and Fontana.

    Race director Beaux Barfield made the surprise announcement Tuesday.

    Barfield says he made the decision for two reasons: the location of the acceleration point on those tracks and drivers' concerns.

    Double-file restarts will continue at IndyCar's other 12 races.

    The move comes 11 months after series CEO Randy Bernard said he would implement the double-file restarts used by NASCAR. Drivers also expressed concerns but were overruled. Bernard said then the series had the most versatile drivers in the world and would find a way to make the double-file restarts work.

      Let me be the first to speak then. Double file restarts are not what killed Dan Wheldon. Yes, it's a shame he perished doing what he loved to do, but lets take a look at the real reason instead of a knee jerk reaction that does nothing to address the safety issue. Dan Wheldon died because of an open cockpit that does not protect the head in any way, shape or form. Indycar needs to enclose the drivers heads in a protective roll cage much like NHRA does with Top Fuel. The argument that fans want to see the drivers is bogus. If fans wanted to see drivers then NASCAR and the NHRA wouldn't be as popular as they are because it's next to impossible to see the drivers in their cars in either of those two series. Had Dan Wheldon had a rollcage encasing his head, he very well may have survived that crash. Of course, running 3 wide around a tight 1.5 mile tri-oval, wide open at better than 215mph makes it tough to say for sure, but he would have stood a much better chance. Eliminating double file restarts won't accomplish diddley squat. Bad move Indycar.

        I agree that better head protection would have helped Dan, but it is foolish to think that single file restarts won't help. Anything that helps break up the packs will help.

        The problem was running on a track which forced everyone to run wide open 100% of the race. Couple that with compacting the field during restarts and this was almost inevitable.

        Last time I checked, the NHRA had multiple classes with open cockpits, so not sure where you are coming from there. Not to mention numerous other forms of auto and motorcycle racing.

        Running the Indycar race on that track was unconscionable.

      The indy car is not supposed to have a top. Change the car and the indy race is gone. The whole concept is an open face in the wind experience that goes back to the day that the only reason they wore goggles was to keep the dirt and mud out of their eyes. After all they were going 30mph in a contraption with a motor a seat, some leavers strapped and riding on spoke wagon wheels. That is part of the race. Wheldon's accident ever so tragic was such a rare happening and the result of chain reaction events involving a dozen cars that send him airborne. As terrible as it was, nothing can be done to safeguard from that except to do not tailgate anymore and maintain a safe distance between cars. The only thing wrong with that is, oh yeah, that's not racing. It is great to go and watch cars that go really fast. The sport is racing, so yes, danger is involved and risk is the name of the game. It is not for sissies nor amateurs at this level of play. God Bless and my prayers are given to those in this sport every day, cause you guys and gals are some brave people and I love you dearly and I love a fast car..........
