INF DeRosa retires
Ending a career that could stand as the definition of "journeyman," infielder Mark DeRosa announced his retirement Tuesday.
DeRosa, 38, played 16 years in the major leagues, appearing for eight teams and seeing action at six positions.
During his final season, DeRosa played 88 games for the Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .235 with a .326 on-base percentage, a .407 slugging percentage, seven homers and 36 RBIs.
DeRosa broke in with the Atlanta Braves in 1998, and he subsequently played for the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Washington Nationals and Toronto.
He earned a World Series ring with the Giants in 2010. He was San Francisco's starting left fielder the first six weeks before a wrist injury kept him out of the remainder of the regular season and the postseason.
A shortstop early in his career, DeRosa wound up seeing the bulk of his playing time at third base and second base. He also played right field, left field and first base.
His final career numbers: .268 average, .340 OBP, .412 slugging percentage, 100 homers and 494 RBIs in 1,241 games.
