    Infant killed after shots fired into Detroit home

    DETROIT (AP) — Attackers peppered a house on Detroit's west side with gunshots early Monday, killing a 9-month-old boy, police said.

    Delric Miller was in the living room and other children and adults were at home when the shooting happened around 4:30 a.m., Sgt. Eren Stephens told reporters. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

    Police Chief Ralph Godbee said during an afternoon press conference that the shooting was gang-related. An AK-47 rifle was used in the attack. No arrests have been made.

    "It's actually amazing — an act of God — that more people in that house were not killed," Godbee said. "Again, adult behavior has brought another child in Detroit to an end that is certainly incomprehensible for a lot of people."

    Neighbors said they heard rapid gunfire. The assailants drove off after the attack, Stephens said.

    Detroit saw a rise in homicides last year and continues to see an uptick in killings.

    A 12-year-old girl was killed Jan. 31 after shots were fired into her Detroit home. Police have said that shooting stemmed from a misunderstanding about a mobile phone. A 19-year-old man and his 35-year-old mother have been charged in the killing.

    There were 344 homicides in Detroit last year, compared with 308 in 2010. As of Feb. 12, 41 homicides were recorded. There were 33 at the same time last year.

    "We as a community ... we have to come together to stop this senseless violence," Stephens said.

      There is no punishment too harsh for someone who killed a 9-month old. None. When they find out who the shooter is, they should hang them before sunset.

      I wonder if any of the gang members are collecting unemployment benefits. Seems like they are all pretty busy working.
      If shooting and drug dealing are considered working.
      Maybe the unemployment figures are down because of this.
      Poor little 9 month old. Maybe God took him back to a safer place.

      boston/camden/philly/miami/st. louis/fresno/newark/phoenix/etc/etc/etc......when will law enforcement begin to classify gangs as URBAN TERRORISTS and go after them with the same zeal as they have for muslim extremeists? there are FAR MORE GANGBANGERS in america than islamic kooks, it just boggles the mind that the FBI is more preoccupied with the BOOGYMAN they cant find, rather than the THUGS PARKED ACROSS THE STREET

      This horror started when the "residents" decided Detroit was racist and wanted to change the city, they did change the City by lighting it on FIRE! These fools didn't realize that "white flight" would follow their stupidity! When the dust settled and Detroit was left with most of the law abiding gone and that only #$%$ and trash were left it dawned on them that they made a mistake! Detroit should change its name to Watts NORTH! It will NEVER come back! The Government is in the process now of tearing down all the abandoned buildings, there are "football stadium" sized areas all over Detroit, like a prairie, because of stupidity!

      Want to watch crime rates drop? Bring back the death penalty and use it only in cases where there is incontrovertible proof, then use it swiftly, publicly. Killing a 12 year old over a cell phone? Seriously? If that was my kid there would be a 19 year old and a 35 year old dead from a run in with the business end of a Louisville Slugger.

      Lived outside Detroit for 35 years----and NOTHING changed in 35 years. Don't expect anything to change anytime soon. And when you here that Detroit is getting better because GM and Chrysler are doing well, don't be fooled. There are neighborhoods in Detroit that will NEVER improve until they are completely razed and rebuilt.

        My grandmother's neighborhood in Detroit near the fairgrounds was already leveled. It's sad to see it on zillow. Just streets and lots that used to be houses.

      action reaction until you make the laws stick with hard punishments you are going to have it stay the same, does not matter the age if you kill it is murder. if you steal it does not matter dollar amount it is all a crime, there are times for sympathy but in most cases hard punishment is needed and good behavior is before a crime not while in jail so you can be released to do it again and again. sure we can find a hoover dam prodject someplace to get something back to pay for criminal housing cost.

        Shootings happen in countries where gun control is the strictest. This is about behavior, everyone I know that lives around us has guns (Texas) but I don't personally know of a single person who's ever been shot. Its not the guns, its the behaviour of the so called adults that hold them.
