The Inside Scoop from 2 Broke Girls' Costume Designer: Trayce Field Shares All

Wondering where Max and Caroline get their awesome style? Thank Trayce Field, the costume designer for 2 Broke Girls. Field spills all about the girls' clothing, the biggest challenges on set, and even shares styling tips with fans.

How would you describe the style of the show?
I would describe the show's style as character specific. Vintagey chic meets girls on a budget. Each character has its own look. Max: our vintage inspired sexy girl. Caroline: our chic couture sweet girl.  Sophie: our Polish Barbie Doll.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face styling the characters?
The biggest challenge styling the characters on the show is time. My team and I only get one day to prep each episode. The next day is our fitting day and then we film the following day. It doesn't give us a whole lot of time to get it together. No missing a beat around here!

How many duplicates of Max & Caroline’s waitress uniforms exist?
We have ten duplicates of each uniform for Max and Caroline. The fabric is close-out vintage fabric from the 70s. During our second season I found a vintage fabric manufacturer and had the fabric recreated!

Who is favorite character to dress? And why?
My favorite? All the character are my favorites. Each week there is something different to create for at least one of them. Max, Caroline, Sophie, Earl, Han, and Oleg...there is always something fun and challenging to create for them!

Describe a style choice you made that you feel made an impact on the character.
A defining style choice for the Max character is definitely her signature belted shirts and vintage boots.  She always accents her..ahem..um decollage by belting her waist. Seems to do the trick nicely.

What is your inspiration for Sophie’s unique and bold style?
POLISH BARBIE! Color, jewels, sparkle, and the highest heels possible!

What style tips or advice would you give the fans?
Top 7 Styling Tips
1. Dress for your body type. Just because it’s a trend doesn’t mean it’s the trend for you!  Its all about fit!
2. Always take pride in your appearance. Take a few extra minutes to really feel good in your clothes, hair, and make up. You never know who you may run into, or if paparazzi may be hiding on the street. You feel better when you look better.
3. Foundations are so important. Invest in good structured undergarments. Spanx are a girls best friend!
4. The perfect accessory completes the look. Find the perfect purse, jewels, and shoes. They make all the difference between wearing a good outfit or wearing an amazing outfit!
5. Every girl should own a pair of J Brand stretch jeans. They really are the best secret weapon in creating a good bottom half. Dress them up or dress them down. Take them from day to night effortlessly!
6. Find colors that work with your coloring. The wrong color can make a good outfit an awful one.
7. And last, but not least...have a good tailor! Most people don’t walk right into clothing. Don’t be afraid to recut or tailor your clothes to your body!  This tip could change your life! Look good feel good!
