New York is one of the biggest fashion capitals of the world, and from February 9-16, 2012, some of the legends in the fashion world are going to gather in the city for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, Betsey Johnson, and Michael Kors are just some of those who are on the schedule to have shows during the 2012 Fashion Week. It's one of the most famous fashion events, and being able to attend in some capacity is a dream of many. Unfortunately, not everyone can attend, but that doesn't have to stop you from learning some interesting facts about the NYC Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
First fashion week
The first New York fashion week took place in 1943, and it was also the world's first official fashion week. Back then it was called "Press Week" and was organized by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert.
Major fashion weeks
The four major fashion capitals of the world are New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Although many can name them with no problem, what some may not be aware of is that the fashion weeks in the respective cities take place in the exact same order every year, starting with New York. There are two fashion shows every year in each location - one in February and one in September.
Big spenders
There are approximately 230,000 attendees at each New York Fashion Week. They're responsible for more than $446 million in visitor spending.
Nail facts
The nails may not seem very important, but when models walk down the runway or pose with their hands on their hips, their hands can't look anything less than perfect. During almost any show at New York Fashion Week, there are approximately 20-40 models who have to get manicures. Only about 14 nail techs are on hand at each show, and each one has less than 10 minutes to make a model's nails look perfect.
Time involved
Despite all the work that goes into a single show at New York Fashion Week, each show only lasts between seven and 20 minutes.
Models and shows
There are approximately 200 shows during New York Fashion Week with about 30 models per show. About 10 of those models do an estimated four shows a day, while about five more girls are considered the top models of the season and might do five or six shows a day.
