Interior Dept. to ban mining near Grand Canyon

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Interior Department is moving forward with a plan to ban new mining claims on 1 million acres near the Grand Canyon, even as congressional Republicans try to block efforts to limit mining operations in an area known for high-grade uranium ore.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is expected to finalize a 20-year ban on new mining claims on public land surrounding the Grand Canyon at an event Monday in Washington.

Salazar twice imposed temporary bans as officials studied the environmental and economic effects of a longer-term ban.

Conservation groups hailed the 20-year ban, first announced in October, as a crucial protection for an American icon. The mining industry and some Republican members of Congress called the ban detrimental to Arizona's economy and the nation's energy independence.

There always seems to be a short term profit motive that ignores the long term loss of an action. If we need the ten years of oil in remote reserves right now, it is no longer a reserve and what do we do in ten years when we used up our reserve?

If we need to mine that area now where do they mine in a hundred or a thousand years?
Devouring all resources at the highest possible rate and leaving little for the future is saying that you believe your offspring will not need it or will do without what you had now, or not live.

This panic of need is a symptom of a problem.
The problem is not the large consumption of the energy buy each individual exactly, tho that should be reduced if possible, because there is huge amounts of energy captured on earth each day.
But there are huge amounts of Consumers to use that energy and more on the way.
We need to reduce the consumers, and this is not a popular idea to those who feel a need for consumers for their products, whether material or spiritual products.
We also feel we need enough children to keep us warm and change our messes when we are old and sick.

We actually need fewer people on this little planet.
      Fewer consumers.

We need to learn that we don't need to justify ourselves or entertain ourselves or protect our future comfort by having offspring.
We need to live on the energy of the present and future rather than the stored plant energy of the past .
We need to think of those children that will have needs of a warm place to live and a field to eat from when we are long gone.
We need to learn to think of more than our immediate gratification and greeds.

How many jobs do you think a pristine GCNP and all of the NPs that are part of the Great Circle Tour produce ?

You say we need less people on the planet, and less consumers, yet you type out your hypocritical message on a consumer product while consuming electricity to do so. Hmmmmm. If you truly believe the planet needs less people, why don't you lead by example?

        well,
I have no kids and have taken steps to keep it that way.
and yes I use technology, we are going to need this and more technology to support our aging population when we have two or more elderly for each younger supporter.
And yes I do consume. I consume much more than some of my friends who forced me to watch "the story of stuff", but much less than other friends who have needs I don't understand.
We do what we can to break our bad habits while striving to promote the good ones

We can't mine everything just to provide jobs.

I wish they would define the word "near". Can you please put that into miles, yards, or even feet so we would know what "near" means.

uranium ore what are they doing to do with it. I under stood that back in 1975 the government had huge surplus and had trouble storing it. The mines were still producing so why look for more.

Luckily none of the anti -environmentalists drink the water that comes from the Colorado River bc that's where all of the toxic byproducts of uranium mining is going to wind up

Democrats further destroying any chance the USA can ever be economically viable ever again. Look, kids, some day, the people who actually pay taxes won't be able to create all that lovely income all you democrats rely on to get your food stamps and welfare checks if we can't produce anything.

Of course the paradox is that the best use for the uranium that you guys love would be to power the mass transit vehicles that you guys hate

So, what's wrong with a Grand Canyon that glows in the dark? And if people downstream don't want to see their drinking water in the dark they can just vote with their feet. Isn't that how we've always done it? If we totally mess up the entire planet we can all just move to Mars, right? How dare anyone stand in the way of progress. Besides a little extra airborn radiation might even help slow down the over population of the earth.
If you want more excuses for mining the most hazardous elements ever discovered, just read more comments on this article. Every argument favoring this mining is a double edged sword just as every argument against. The bottom line is basically that what we do today determines what our life will be like tomorrow. Choose your future, both sides have their downside. Do you choose higher energy prices or higher health costs? Maybe you should tell your children about the issues and let them decide.

The Indians are mining 'gold' from tourists at their Skywalk attraction at the west end of the Grand Canyon.
      • nicholas 4 mths ago
more like ripping them off bc the place is miles and miles downriver from what most regard as the real Grand Canyon
    • Scott  •  4 mths ago
Indian tribes would benefit from that mining as would American industry. Will the Interior dept reduce it's size? After all they'll have less work now.

Not in the Grand Canyon. Near the Grand Canyon. The Democrats want nothing that might create jobs and aid our energy independence, especially at the same time.

Hard to ship mining jobs overseas.Too much government. Too many rules & interference.
That is why we have no jobs or lose then overseas.Intrusive government forces businesses to close.

I guess we didn't need those jobs either? And we wonder why most of our steel is mined and then made in other countries.

Consider the Republican'ts would mine Arlington National Cemetery if a corporation thought they could make some doing it. The Republitards cheer every time Peabody Energy destroys an entire mountain during mountain top removal.
