International envoys seek to restart Mideast talks

JERUSALEM (AP) โ€” International mediators sat down with Palestinian and Israeli officials in Jerusalem on Wednesday in the hope of finding a formula to restart deadlocked peace talks.

But in a telling commentary on the beleaguered state of peacemaking, they huddled separately with officials from each side and will not be meeting with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

The mission by the Quartet of Mideast peace negotiators comes after the Palestinians asked the United Nations last month to recognize an independent state of Palestine. The request defied a U.S.-led effort to block the move, which is under review at the U.N. Security Council.

Immediately after the statehood application was submitted, the Quartet โ€” representing the U.S., European Union, Russia and U.N. โ€” called for a resumption of peace talks in a month, with the ambitious goal of reaching a peace agreement by late 2012.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said he had no expectations that peace talks could be moved forward.

The Palestinians rejected a Quartet proposal to have Erekat meet face to face with Israeli official Yitzhak Molcho.

Palestinians refuse to resume direct talks until Israel agrees to freeze construction on captured lands the Palestinians claim for a future state. They also want to base talks on the contours of a future Palestinian state on lines Israel held before capturing east Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war.

"We explained to the Quartet that we are prepared to sit at the negotiating table as soon as the Israeli government freezes all settlement construction and accepts clear terms of reference, specifically the 1967 borders," Erekat said. "Anything short of that will simply put us back on the failed track that we have been on for the last 20 years."

Israel rejects both conditions. It still occupies east Jerusalem and the West Bank. It withdrew soldiers and settlers from Gaza in 2005, but still controls its land crossings between Israel and Gaza and maintains a naval blockade on the territory, which is controlled by anti-Israel Hamas militants.

Israel says it is prepared to sit down with the Palestinians at any time, but only without conditions. Palestinians are skeptical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's commitment to peacemaking because of hard-line positions he has taken, including his opposition to partitioning Jerusalem.

"Israel welcomed the call by the Quartet for the immediate resumption of direct peace talks without preconditions. We are ready. We hope today's talks in Jerusalem will facilitate an early resumption of direct talks," said Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev. "Ultimately it's high time the Palestinians stop boycotting the peace talks and return to the negotiating table. How do they expect to solve problems unless they're willing to talk about those problems?"

Shortly before Wednesday's meetings with Quartet envoys, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman reiterated his position that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was "one of the major obstacles to peace" and that his resignation would be a "blessing."

Erekat told Army Radio, following its interview with Lieberman, that the Israeli foreign minister was "inciting" against the Palestinian leader and that his comments were tantamount to an assassination call.

"Lieberman's gangland politics have no place in the 21st century," Erekat said.

Regev had no immediate comment when asked if Lieberman's remarks reflected his personal opinion or government policy.

Peace talks stalled three years ago, then resumed for a brief three weeks in September 2010 before collapsing after a 10-month Israeli settlement construction slowdown expired.

Peace talks. What a joke. There's about as much chance as that happening as there is of me being President. And that's 0%. Send all the envoys from now till eternity. Not going down, period. End of story!!!

      Dear Israelis,

Start teaching your children Russian, Polish, and Ukrainien, the language most of you already speak from your true homeland. It will only be a matter of time when you pigs will have to find boats to take you back to your real homes.

Palestine for Palestinians, not squatters who made up a "holocaust".

This whole Israel thing is nuts. Bunch of Eastern Europeans come from nowhere, invade a land, take over politically, and push out the locals who have lived there for 1000's of years claiming that God told them to do it. Funny, but when someone goes out and commits crimes based on what God told them, we usually treat them like nuts.

The Real Joe - are you an idiot in real life or are you just acting the part for entertainment purposes?
      • The Real Joe 7 mths ago
Thanks Dwtex! It's always great when someone decides to entirely skirt the issue and resort to insults. I assure you I am not an idiot. I assure you, by any measure that you propose, that I am smarter than you, no doubt richer than you, and certainly more respected than you, so before you make such a bold statement, ask a few questions as you clearly have no clue who you are up against, and that my friend, is truly a sign of stupidity.

CoolHand, as you point out Gaza's beachfront property, there's also access to a large potential casino gambling market. A theme-based "Samson's Temple Hotel-Casino Resort" in Gaza (site of where Samson brought the house down) could make the Gaza economy, but of course the morons who run it would rather use it for a terrorist base and complain when they're treated as such.
    • CoolHand  •  7 mths ago
I've suggested many times that the Palestinians ought to make whatever concessions they need to make before there's nothing left of the West Bank on which to form a state.

After visiting Cancun Mexico, I immediately thought of the Gaza Strip. Twelve miles of coastline nestled in the southeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea. If the people were warm and inviting, what major hotel company wouldn't want to build a resort there and bring billions of dollars into the Gaza Strip economy?

Instead they live in squalor, refugee camps, smuggle arms in through tunnels, gangs of violent thugs rule the streets, and they wait for their leadership to destroy Israel.

Frankly, the Gaza strip is just like any other anarchistic environment where moderates live in fear for their lives. But you can't discount the effects of generations of propaganda in schools that have been teaching children to hate Jews. In a culture where they persist in referring to the 1948 Declaration of the State Israel as the "catastrophe", what else can we come to expect.

Peace has always been up to the Palestinians, it has always been for them to come to terms with their own reality. But they've always managed to disappoint, insisting on terms that will never be met. Peace has been there for them to grasp as long ago as 1973, when it became fairly obvious that the surrounding nations would not be attempting anymore attacks on Israel.

At any time in the past sixty years, the Palestinian leadership could have said, enough!
Israel is a Jewish State, it has a right to exists, in peace, and we would like the same for ourselves. But that never has never happened.
      • ฤ’qualizer 7 mths ago
Odd how the majority of the world doesn't see the situation as clearly as you do.

Perhaps too often, too many people are simply just use to blaming the Jews.
      • CoolHand 7 mths ago
The Jews came into themselves along time ago, and if you take a close look at the map, there couldn't have been a worse place on the planet. It lies smack dab in the middle of the cross roads between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Trampled by every civilization in existence, the Jews have endured through almost six millennium. Believe me they only want to live in peace.

The world can't understand what the Jews were chosen for, and I contend that it is to suffer for the inequities of all the others. I can't imagine what else the future has in store for thee poor people.

"Lieberman's gangland politics have no place in the 21st century," Erekat said.

Placating Muslims and terrorists as in the Shilat deal shouldn't have any place in any century, if Israel knows what's good for them. History repeats itself. Remember the holocaust? My how easily people forget, even though history proves time and again that it repeats itself.

Obama is leading people like sheep to the slaughter, both Americans and Jews. Look at this Bible prophesy.

According to Dan 9:27, the Biblical antichrist in the whitehouse will force Israel to divide its land by signing a peace deal with Israel (which will guarantee her security). This, according the Bible not according to me, is the event which will start the 7 year tribulation and bring devastation on the US (the Harlot as she is called in Rev 17 and 18). Notice what it says about the "Harlot", which is America....

"In her heart she boasts, 'I sit as queen; I am not a widow, and I will never mourn.' Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her."

You see the antichrist (called the Scarlet Beast) first arises out of her, then gains power from 10 kings (presumably from the Arab Spring) and then destroys her. - Rev 17:17

Then at the end of the tribulation, Christ will return. Here is what the Bible says regarding that:

โ€œLook, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.โ€ โ€“ Rev 1:7.

This verse indicates that most people will be on the wrong side when He returns.

Are you on the right side?

"Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also." 1John 2:22-23.

      These things will happen.
    • juan  •  7 mths ago
So the Palestinians will run the clock, as last time, and some time in November 2012 will agree to sit down and will press that the original time table must be accomplish in order to have a deal in December 2012.

They are at an impasse. Palestinian authorities want to go back to '67 border lines and Israel says no.
      • Hendrik 7 mths ago
It would be best to go back to 1947 borders, before millions of kykes arrived. Why did the6 million jews of europe need a homeland? They claimed all 6 million were holocausted so no homeland is necessary. Or is that another jewish lie?
      • Jerry 7 mths ago
It would be best to just create a one state solution with a majority ruled democracy. But Israel says no to that as well.
      • Hendrik 7 mths ago
        Ja, that would be fair.
    • Benjamin  •  7 mths ago
So, Palestinians agree that negotiations are possible after:

      1. Israel concedes to their single largest demand, with no reciprocal concession by the Palestinians, before negotiations ever begin.

      2. Israel agrees to adhere to 1967 borders, which Israel was adhering to in 1967 when it was invaded by the Palestinians, Egyptians, Jordanians, and Syrians.

This is why Palestinian negotiations are as successful as Palestinian infrastructure, justice, and politics. It must be nice to spend six decades trying to make war instead of building a nation, then blaming all problems on your adversary.
In that time, Israel seems to have succeeded both at making war on its enemies and building its own nation.

So clearly the right thing to do here is to support the self-entitled losing Palestinian side, because although they've failed to build their own nation, failed to make peace when Israel offered to dismantle all settlements in 2000, and failed to build any solidarity with their Arab kin outside of joining together in the common cause of outnumbering, invading, and being militarily embarrassed by Israel, they just like to feel like downtrodden underdogs.
Perhaps this is why in prisoner trades, it takes over a thousand Palestinians to equal one Israeli.

Hi Democracy. You were on here yesterday, typing lots of rude things to more serious posters.
In this instance, you've provided not only no opinion, but no facts to back up the opinion you don't have.
I recognize and support your right to believe and say whatever you want, even if it makes no sense and is just argumentative for the sake of argument.

So I guess my beliefs are INFINITELY more Democratic than yours.

I hope your day gets better and you try to align your beliefs with logical reasons at some point in your life.

Isarel says for $ 75 billion, they will destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities. Saudis and Kuwaitins will dole out $ 35 billion if the US doles out $ 40 billion. This is cheaper and better than the $ 3 trillion wastefully spent on the endless wars in Iraq, Pakistan and Afganistan by Bush and Obama.

Hendrek, since you're such a fan of the UN, how about pointing out the Arab refusal to accept Res 181, a decision by the legal government to establish both supermajority Jewish and supermajority Arab nations in the Palestine Trusteeship? The Arabs accept the decision the legal government made, and we wouldn't even be having this discussion.
    • Marc  •  Brooklyn, United States  •  7 mths ago
The real reason there is no peace, and the real reason Abbas is doing everything he can to avoid negotiating, is that the Arabs know that in any peace agreement, they will need to acknowledge Israel as the ancestral Jewish homeland and accept that Israel has the right to control its immigration and citizenship (which means that 5,000,000 Arabs currently outside of Israel should have no expectation of Israeli residency and citizenship). The Arabs will not agree to these basic principles, which is why Arafart TURNED DOWN his own nation in 2000 and 2001, and why Abbas turned one down in 2008.

It's not about the 1949 Armistice lines (erroneously called the 1967 "borders"), it's about the Arab refusal to accept a government formed by a Jewish supermajority governing any part of Palestine.
    • Greg  •  Pleasanton, United States  •  7 mths ago
Talking makes much more sense then fighting over something that might be able to be talked out. Bombs can not sign a peace treaty. The Palestinians need to lower their expectations. Israel is after all the only true Jewish homeland their is and their is not a whole lot of land to go around. Try to imagine yourself in your enemies postion, how would you respond if you were them. And then go to the table with a more clearer view of both sides, not just your side.

I would like to know what those who vehemently oppose the Gaza blockade feel would happen should it be lifted.
Do they really imagine weapons wouldn't be shipped in from Iran?
It seems the aims and objectives favored by these people are the creation of a scenario in which Hamas, aided by their sponsor in Tehran, are able to take better aim at Israel,
using more sophisticated weaponry, and kill a great number of innocent people - for I see no other eventuality should carte blanche be given to ship weapons to Gaza.
    • Marc  •  Brooklyn, United States  •  7 mths ago
Shekel Trader, how about the pesky Palestinians stop coveting land that "everybody" agrees is under Israeli sovereignty (i.e., what Israel controlled after the 1949 Armistice agreements)?
