    International Paper profit falls but beats Street

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — International Paper's net income fell 19 percent in the fourth quarter, but the company topped most expectations when costs of a acquiring a major rival are excluded.

    Shares rose nearly 2 percent in midday trading.

    Net income was $257 million, or 59 cents per share, compared with $316 million, or 74 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. After stripping out one-time charges such as the pending purchase of Temple-Inland, per-share earnings were 66 cents. That easily beat the 60 cents that analysts were looking for, according to a poll by FactSet.

    Revenue fell 2.5 percent to $6.37 billion, still better than predictions of $6.52 billion.

    The Memphis company is facing a higher effective tax rate for the year. Growth in emerging markets had been strong and the company is cutting expenses.

    The company paid less for recycled fiber and saw stronger industrial demand for boxes. But the company was also forced to ease prices in China and Europe for consumer packaging, and was hurt by what it described as "increased maintenance outages."

    The company didn't give an update on the Temple-Inland deal, expect to note the expenses involved in trying to buy it. That deal was inked in September but still needs regulatory approval.

    For the year, net income more than doubled to $1.34 billion, and revenue rose 3.4 percent to $26 billion.

    Shares of International Paper Co. rose 1.6 percent in the early afternoon to $31.89.
