Internet titans fight SOPA with full-page NY Times ad

Nine giants of the Internet — Google, eBAy, AOL, Facebook, Yahoo, Zynga, LinkedIn, Mozilla and Twitter — have placed a full-page ad in today’s New York Times as part of their efforts to fight back against the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) and the “PROTECT IP Act.”

These pieces of legislation, which have strong bipartisan support in Congress, as well as backing from the Motion Picture Association of America, a variety of Hollywood union organizations and even Master Card and Pfizer, would require companies and Internet service providers to block access to any website that the entertainment industry believes “engages in, enables or facilitates” copyright infringement. In essence, these bills, if they become law, would allow for broad Internet censorship. And companies like those listed above would be required by law to do the censoring.

While those who wish for greater ways to fight copyright infringement say the legislation is good and necessary, opponents — which stretch far and wide — say the legislation will stifle innovation online by changing the entire nature of the Internet as we know it, and further warn that this could be the beginning of the “Great Firewall of America.”

We are turning into China. When will our government gain enough control to be happy? How much is enough? I there such a thing as enough? If anyone is for this it is because they feel as though they are loosing money without it.
    • Congressman Boner  •  6 mths ago
They're fighting for control the the internet. The internet will become another tool by the elite to control the masses of the people. Look around. There's no "free press" anymore. A hand full of billionaires with an agenda control all the media and press in this country! Just look at what's happening and think for yourself!!
      • Mark 6 mths ago
#$%$ right Sir. The internet represents an infringement against the power control of a totalitarian government bent on subverting the rights of the people. I live for the day when Americans everywhere come to their senses an realize that the two party system has failed miserably. Only then will we fight the good fight much like our forefathers did some 235 years ago.
    • JoeAmerican  •  Mount Vernon, United States  •  6 mths ago
Do you see? WE will not lose our freedoms all at once but slowly over the years our rights will be reduced to none. They will tell us it is for our own good, it will make us safer, it will make us healthier, and so on and so on and. If we are weak we will submit. If we are lazy they will win. If we don not stay always vigilant then we will no longer be Americans, we will be mere citizens of the world. No different than those who have knelled before tyrants, dictators, and kings since the beginning of human history. Never knell to them, be an American and read "Why we need a third party" by J.L. Slough and "Science, Government, and Football" also by J.L. Slough.

The freedom to steal other peoples' copyrighted work?
      • Will 6 mths ago
Why should you be free to steal - I don't get it? Then I should be "free" to come to your house and take what you own - that's my "freedom" according to your definition. That is what you do when you illegally download something created by someone else - you are a common thief - nothing more.
      • moo 6 mths ago
He is not saying that he wants to steal things. He is against Internet censorship. They are two different things.

Anything backed by the suits at RIAA is bad for America.
    • Waluigi  •  6 mths ago
So Leonard Napolitano, director of computer sciences and information systems at Sandia Labs, which is the cybersecurity organization owned by the government handling infrastructure security for the nation, warned in a letter that the legislation is "unlikely to be effective" and will "negatively impact U.S. and global cybersecurity and Internet
functionality." If this isn't enough to toss the bill out the window, then what is? Goes to show how idiotic the politicians supporting this bill really are. If this legislation passes, I fear for the future of this country.
    • Deb  •  Billings, United States  •  6 mths ago
Once again, the masses must pay for the actions of a few...If the RIAA wants to prosecute those sites that are violating copyright law, fine, but let them find them and bear the cost of doing so. To expect internet service providers to censor their customers is ridiculous. And how are they going to handle the ones that originate out of the USA? Is blocking all access to non-USA sites next on the agenda? The internet was alot more enjoyable when only geeks were on it!

Do you think that the makers of buggy-whips were upset when Ford invented the car ? Of course, but innovation and progress drive this country. The old business model of the entertainment industry must change to reflect their Customers needs and wants, not be protected by the government, against the wishes of the consumer. What if the buggy whip industry had legislated cars to be illegal ... SOPA is just as shortsighted and asinine as being forced to buy pagers in a touch-screen phone market. If the entertainment industry has such a shortfall of leadership for the new century, perhaps the time has come for the consumer to look towards a new venue for their entertainment needs.
      • Will 6 mths ago
Your logic doesn't actually follow. This is not analogous to the buggy whip industry outlawing automobiles. The comparison is totally specious. The correct comparison is to suggest that if you write a book - it should be published on the internet and made available to all and you will not receive any revenue - it will be posted on BitTorrent and similar websites so everyone has access to it. How many more books do you think you will write if that is the case? Will that cause you to be more creative or less? The "business model" always involves selling their IP (intellectual property) to customers. However, what the "customer wants and needs" is free music, free movie, etc. basically they want to steal the hard work of the performers and use it for their benefit without paying. That is not a business model. Certainly companies do need to adapt to availability of the internet, but that is not supposed to mean that they invest money and then give away for nothing. Talk about stifling creativity - that is the surest way to do it.

Normally I download music and if I like it I will buy it. If I dont then I get rid of it.

Unbelievable! What do we need to do to get our government out of our lives and to concentrate on the issues at hand. Our founding fathers must be shedding tears as the land of the free no longer exists as they had intended it to.
      • David S 6 mths ago
As great as our founding fathers were at crafting the Constitution, the world is a much, much different place today and if we fail to recognize that, we are doomed.
    • David  •  6 mths ago
We will lose our freedoms and "patriots" will cheer it as it happens in the name of national unity.
      • Will 6 mths ago
If freedom to steal the creative work of others is how you define freedom - you don't deserve the freedom you enjoy
    • William  •  Portland, United States  •  6 mths ago
It's all about the money, stop innovation on the internet in the name of protecting an industry by letting said industry dictate what's good and bad for us to have access to. And when someone comes in with something that threatens this industry - ooh, they're infringing on our copyrights, so let's shut em down. Just like the US steel industry files complaints about foreign companies undercutting steel prices to gain a foothold...
    • Montague  •  6 mths ago
This is just the foot in the door. Those who have power cannot abide a resources as uncontrolled and unregulated as the internet. It disturbs their fantasies of control, and that is intolerable. These pieces of legislation must not be allowed to pass.
    • Bryn  •  6 mths ago
Of course the MPAA supports this bull****. Why can't they just keep away? No good will come of more government involvement with the web, absolutely none.
    • Ursa Major  •  6 mths ago
good luck censoring the ENTIRE internet :)
    • Phillippines36  •  New Orleans, United States  •  6 mths ago
I don't even know any more if we have a government or a dictaorship.
    • Phillippines36  •  New Orleans, United States  •  6 mths ago
Hmmm, if the government of the united states is on so much deaths and deficits, why they keep using taxpayers money for unnecessary passing the bills like "censorship on the net," to pass through? Maybe it's time to do an over haul and replace all of our entire govefnment officials including senators.

If they don't like pirating TV, music and others. They should not put it online.
    • Anthony  •  Atlanta, United States  •  6 mths ago
Obviously it's not purposely trying to destroy the internet, but i think giving these Hollywood moguls too much power could unintentionally do so.
    • Louie Lou I  •  6 mths ago
      rotten libs ruined the internet
    • Ariel Guerra  •  6 mths ago
Its pretty much battle of the money, and Hollywood has tons of more money then these Internet titans to sweet talk congress into passing this stupid bill
