Iran bill to ban oil sales to EU postponed

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's parliament has postponed a vote on a bill requiring the government to immediately halt crude oil sales to Europe, an Iranian lawmaker said Sunday.

The ban would be a response to the EU's decision to stop importing Iranian oil and freeze assets of its central bank.

The EU decision last Monday was the latest attempt to pressure Iran over its nuclear program. The U.S. and its allies believe it is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Lawmaker Ali Adiani Rad is quoted by the semiofficial ISNA news agency as saying lawmakers need experts' views before they vote on the ban.

Because of the significance of the step, Rad was quoted as saying, "Lawmakers proposing the bill believe the legislation should be put on agenda after strong expert evaluation is obtained."

Rad said no date has been set for a vote.

Many Iranian officials have called for an immediate ban on oil exports to the European bloc before the EU's ban goes into full effect in July, arguing that the 27 EU nations account for only about 18 percent of Iran's overall oil sales and would be hurt more by the decision than Iran. China, a key buyer of Iranian crude, has criticized the EU embargo.

Ahmad Qalebani, director of the National Iranian Oil Company, said his company is ready to cut off oil sales to Europe at any moment.

Qalebani told the semiofficial Mehr news agency Sunday that Iran can find new customers for its crude oil, but some European refineries will find it technically problematic to switch to non-Iranian crude.

Iran & USA are working in tandem to bankrupt EU.
The oil ban from Iran will be the final nail in the coffin of the EU and more importantly Euro.
The mighty $$$$ will be king of the world again :)

You are right. This USA-Iran politico-economic drama is going to bankrupt Europe and its currency. The US does not need Iranian trade and, Iran does not need American trade. But Europe's energy policy has always been to be less dependent on Russian oil which caused a nightmare two years ago after a winter freeze over Ukrainian disputes. So Europe relies also on Iranian (through Turkey) and Algerian (through Tunisia) oil. Iranian oil accounts for about 14% of mineral fuels in Spain, Italy and Greece. But processed Iranian oil in those countries accounts for another 10% of their exports of lubricants, petrochemicals and asphalt. So a cancellation of Iranian oil may account for about 24% of trades in those countries. And their conversion to non-Iranian oil will be expensive because not all oils are created equal. So such a crisis on top of current economic depression while in winter season will finish off Greece and Italy overnight and, Spain a month later. Furthermore, Iran imports 20% of its imports from Western Europe especially from Germany (7%) and Italy (5%). Italy would stand to lose its $5 billion Eni pipeline investment in Iran. So yes, Mediterranean Europe would break and it would be unable to guarantee any of the German and French loans. In a worst case scenario, Europe will go bankrupt in the way of Iceland.

China and India will buy every barrel Iran pumps. Fine, EU. You don't want Iran's oil, you don't get Iran's oil, and that means now. Why can't Iran refine it's own oil? Are there patent issues? If so, let China do it. Copywrite and patent infringement is their specialty. Iran could sell ALL of it's oil to China with a small bump back of gasoline. Iran drives on with it's nuclear power generated electricity and finds itself free of western hegemony and sanctions. In hindsight, history will dictate that the west pushed them into it in self-defense. A "liberated Iraq" that want's to side with Iran, a "liberated Egypt" that is electing the Muslim Brotherhood into power, a "liberated Lybia" that is leaning towards sharia law and now an Iran that we are pushing toward energy independence. We're batting 1.000.

USA,UE leaders are vacant and Israel employed them to work him, against Iran.
They make and help to grow this tumor, and now this tumor control them.

Great go ahead and do it. I am sure that the other oil producers will step up production a little bit to make it up. Then the Iranians can try to get china to buy all of it, but, with no competition for the oil the price will sink. I hope they vote to do it today

I really could care less and I can't the relevance to average US citizens. We have had no relations with Iran in 30 years. Corporate media headlines Syria, Iran and the Republican Primary 5 times a day. Count them. It a bombardment of information that doesn't address joblessness, homelessness, poverty, protests. increased education and healthcare cost and loss of housing values here in the US. Corporate media doesn't headline corporate dirty work. Instead they air out the dirty laundry of targeted colonies for imperialist nations.

This is so ridiculous, Iran will make a law to stop selling oil to Europe in response to Europe law that won't buy oil from iran, am I getting it right?
      • beh 3 mths ago
Eu wants to stop buying oil in 6 months and in return Iran says they are stopping it now and not 6 months later.

Dear Neutral. EU wan't to enjoy the Iranian OIL during the cold winter and then stop buying it in summer to buy time to switch to new resources delay a turmoil in their already sick and fragile Economy, while Iran doesn't want EU to enjoy the winter! Though I don't like the Iranian gov., but their reaction is very smart! Truth hurts! I hope you will still be neutral and make a judgement though against your wil,l just like what I did!

Leave Iran alone. The price of gasoline is high enough. The more we mess with Iran the higher the price of gas. Everyone already has nuclear weapons. One more country will not change the course of human conduct.
      • stephen 3 mths ago
Your a true fool, American speculators are the ones responsible for the price of gas, Iran has never had the power to influenced it one way or the other, but they are stupid, and that gives the speculators someone to make you look at while they steal from you every day!

Never trust the old and rusty colonists EU slimes and Iran needs to cut off NOW the oil and all other contacts with these scumbags double face slimes who have gotten their way through coups, wars, murders, assassinations, chemical weapons, rapes, and stealing resources from the weak nations. It will be no time before they go back to dumping their feces out the window era.,
    • BernieMadoff  •  Richardson, Texas  •  3 mths ago
EU hopes thatt someone else will buy Iranian oil so they can buy oil from the other OPEC producers. Supply and demand will force the price higher for everyone. Beware of unintended consequences. See for example war in Iraq and war in Afghanistan.
