Iran launches production of banned carbon fiber

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has inaugurated its own production of carbon fiber, a material under U.N. embargo because of its potential use in the country's controversial nuclear program, the official IRNA news agency reported Saturday.

Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said Iran decided to manufacture the strategic material domestically since it could no longer access carbon fiber on foreign markets because of the international sanctions.

"Because of the restrictions imposed by the enemies, Iran faced challenges in getting access to carbon fiber," Vahidi was quoted by IRNA as saying.

"That had caused a bottleneck in Iran's production of advanced and smart defense systems," Vahidi said. He claimed Iran has mastered the entire process of carbon fiber production.

Iran uses carbon fiber for more advanced centrifuges, which spin uranium gas to produce enriched uranium. Low-enriched uranium can be used as nuclear fuel while highly enriched uranium can be used in a warhead.

The West suspects Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program. Iran denies the charge and says its uranium enrichment is only geared toward peaceful activities, such as power generation.

Carbon fiber is extremely strong, light and flexible, with high tolerance for heat. It can be used in aerospace and civil engineering, as well as for military purposes. Its production is extremely complex.

Iran often makes announcements of technical and military advancements but those reports cannot be independently verified.

The United Nations has imposed four rounds of Security Council sanctions over Tehran's refusal to halt the enrichment. Iran has been producing low-enriched uranium for years and began higher enrichment in February 2010, asserting it needs the higher grade material to produce fuel for a Tehran reactor that makes medical radioisotopes, needed for cancer patients.

Because of the U.N. ban on sales of carbon fiber to Iran, Tehran has previously had to buy it on foreign markets, presumably through middlemen. It has not disclosed where it obtained previous batches.

Well Iran is renowned for their tireless efforts in cancer research....Oh, wait a minute, no they're aren't.

Down with Saudia Arabia. Lets nuke it

Iran's "mastered process" for producing carbon fiber: take millions of dollars siphoned from America through the Muslim Brotherhood, and then use the illegitimate funds to buy carbon fiber on the Russian black market. This is no different than when Iran gets other goods from Russia and subsequently slaps an Iranian flag on it and proclaims "We made this!!". Just a bunch of lying, murderous people full of hatred.

Iran's peaceful purposes are cast in doubt by it's categorizing the rest of the world as the "enemies".

Just another example of CheObama's policy failures. Maybe if the fool apologizes, the other fool will give it up (NOT)

who cares if they have a nuclear weapon? What are they going to do with it anyway? It'll just give them more international respect, that's all. Big deal. Get over it.

Russia Pakistan and China all have nuclear weapons. Did the world end?

Please do not let some others mislead you like Semi-Crazy White Guy. This production is highly complex and highly secretive. 99.99% of all the people who work at a carbon fiber plant possess the same knowledge of the process as a janitor who works at a nuclear power plant
Panex35 is produced through manufacturing from a low-cost precursor. The fibers are made from an abundant textile-based precursor material that matches and outperforms "aerospace-grade" carbon fibers in tensile strength and modulus.

Let them bomb each other, that way the radiation will cover the whole area. That would be real smart and would really show how stupid they are

Well, someone will just have to have a high level meeting and discuss this over lunch. I thought the Europeans were going to deal with Iran. Everyone will ignore "the elephant in the corner" until suddenly they have a nuclear weapon.

If we let the dictatorial theocracy in persia obtain nuclear weapons the fanatics will use them without provocation and the free peoples of the world will have no one to blame but themselves. No tim for spinelessness

i like how they try to describe the production of carbon fiber as extremely complex. its not. i used to work in a carbon fiber plant. its very simple. a product called panex, which looks like fishing line ( it basically is) is run through an oven where it is baked at 450 degrees. from that oven its run through a second oven that bakes the material at around 1500 degrees. out the end is pure carbon fiber strands which are then woven into thread, then woven into a mat, which is then saturated with a resin that is very similar to fiberglass resin. the mat can then be formed into any shape you desire with molds, then run through an autoclave under vacuum to cure the resin. extremely complex my #$%$ half the people i worked with were alcoholics who drank on the job daily and we still managed to meet our weekly quotas and quality standards.

You sound like a worker bee, who regrets what he decided to do as a job but tries to make it sound as though it has anything to do with high tech. Your job at the plant is probably like working at McDonalds and you got stuck with the fries.
        The definitions for Panex are as follows;
        1. Panex is a puzzle that was invented by Toshio Akanuma. It resembles the tower of Hanoi, but it is in fact a lot more difficult.
        2. Panex is also a company that has been designing and manufacturing precision measurement and data acquisition instruments for the oil and, Collage 1A (250X187), Collage 3A
If you meant to say Panex35 we might be getting somewhere. This product is produced through manufacturing from a low-cost precursor. Our fibers are made from an abundant textile-based precursor material that matches and outperforms "aerospace-grade" carbon fibers in tensile strength and modulus.
        NOW THAT'S INFORMATION !!!

Even a #$%$ can plainly understand what Iran's intentions are. They are a threat to all countries in the entire Middle East region, not just Israel. They are a highly potential threat to the E.U. and to the U.S. as our Navy routinely patrols the the various adjoining seas. As they are to many other free world nations Navies who do the same. It has been a simple wounder as to why nothing has been done militarily thus far. But I am sure Iran's time is running out because sooner or later the free world is going to lose patience.

Does the Iranian Navy routinely patrol just outside U.S territorial waters?

Do the Iranians fly halfway around the world to attack nations next to the U.S. like Mexico or Canada?

Dear Glenx: I despise wars. I'm sick & tired of wars. The Quran does not tell me to kill non-Muslims if they want peace with me. Lastly, If I could, I would make ALL NUCLEAR weapons disappear from the face of the Earth. If Iran nukes Israel, Palestine is next to them, If Israel nukes any Arab country they are close to us. We know radioactivity spreads quickly & EVERYONE around will be affected tremendously...
