Iran says Stuxnet virus infected 16,000 computers

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A senior Iranian intelligence official says an estimated 16,000 computers were infected by the Stuxnet virus.

The powerful virus targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and other industrial sites in 2010, and Tehran has acknowledged the malicious software affected a limited number of centrifuges — a key component in nuclear fuel production. But Iran has said its scientists discovered and neutralized the malware before it could cause serious damage.

The semiofficial Fars news agency on Saturday quoted a deputy intelligence chief identified only as Ahangaran as saying 16,000 computers were infected by Stuxnet, but he did not specify whether worldwide or just in Iran.

He said Iran is facing difficulties obtaining anti-malware software because of international sanctions, forcing Iran to use its own experts to design the software.

This is old news. Stuxnet was on a lot more computers world-wide, but was specifically programmed to affect a certain type of Siemens PLCs. The ones used for the centrifuges.

Un like all the experts I don't know who created the virus but it is without a doubt the highest form of warfare we have seen to date. What's next?

Our infrastructure, banks, government agencies are all under attack every day 24/7, there are no bombs bursting, guns firing or body counts to show for it, this is clandestine and even when there is an attack and we won or they won, no one wants to talk about it. Every once in a while there might be an article that mentions a website or bank or other venue was attacked and not much information.

One of the better ways to slow progress down in Iran. I normally multiply by at least 5 to the damage done when it is reported from Iran. Things are going to really deteriorate quickly now as the sanctions in the banking sector squeeze more and more money out of Iran. This next few months is going to be interesting to say the least.

linux is a pretty good OS
      • ChrisB 3 mths ago
They don't use Linux on centrifuges...which is what this was aimed at. I'm not even sure if anybody uses Linux for SCADA applications at all...

They should buy the software from Israel (with Stuxnet in the box)
    • bushelfoote  •  3 mths ago
You'd have to tailor the virus to take out how similar of a system....because we pretty much know all the parts that make them their version of a computer, and where the parts that weren't home engineered came from..even the home engineered stuff we know..I swear if they get themselves a bomb they're either gonna put their eye out or blow themselves up....either way they're not responsible enough to own this stuff.....Both the U.S and Russia have had accidents with their reactors...and Japan's got #$%$up from the Tsunami......so.....why else would you want the tech if you WEREN'T trying to build a bomb?? For the privilege of goofing up your environment like 3 Mile Island or Chernobyl ?? C'mon!!!............Besides...as soon as the Iranian people figure out how much they've been being schitt on by a theocracy and how much they're missing out on DEMOCRACY it'll be the end of the Ayetolla and Ahmadinejad and the beginning of true representative democracy in Iran.....so there........

so Iran is become more self reliant and efficient because of the sanctions. the west is also becoming more efficient with alternative energy because of the high prices of oil because of Iran. Sounds like a win - win situation to me. we should have done this years ago.

Here is a list of what Iran is in first place

This is only a short list:

      -Stoning women to death
      -Hanging Gays
      -Executing Baha'i
-Guards raping women prisoners sentenced to death
-Torture maiming prisoners for life as standard interrogating procedure (not kids play waterboarding)
      -Clubbing peaceful demonstrators
-Inventing that they are making annual scientific inventions that amount to more than the rest of the world combined
-Too incompetent to control Stuxnet and Duqu viruses that permanently disabled the nuclear program
-Running into the ground the economy of a country with the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world
-Having average income per capita of one third of what it was 33 years ago
-Hosting the largest government bureaucracy in the world relative to population size
-Corruption all the way to the highest level of Guardian Council
-Number of holy Ayatollahs with multiple wives
-Number of holy Ayatollahs becoming $billionaires who were dirt poor 20 years ago, have never run a business in their lifetime and never will
-Number of drug addicts roaming aimlessly in the streets
-Constantly reducing the amount of gasoline produced in the country
      -Photoshopping imaginary military accomplishments
-Losing one million people in an 8 year war
-Sending tens of thousands of poor children to be blown up by mines in the same war, and as a reward putting on their little necks plastic keys to Paradise
-Denying Kurds, Baluchis, Azeris and Khuzestan their unalienable right to secession and forming independent countries while shamelessly/hypocritically demanding that Israel allow it

The long list doesn't fit in this post.

And you know this how ? Fox or CNN.

Here is something you should know about your country.
        300 Rapes per day.
Always screw your neighbors wife or daughter.
Show your own woman half naked in so called Parties in front of other men.
Sell drugs and put them always in stateless mind.
Fund other countries to Occupy and build illegal settlements
Invade other countries & sell arms around the world in the name of terror.
Control Oil and suck your own country people blood.
Lure your own people to buy homes and loot their lives.
Higher healthcare and all time high insurances.

        Need I say more?
