Iran warns of downing other US drones in its skies

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran will hunt down more American spy drones if the U.S. continues to violate its air space, a senior Iranian military official warned Friday, the latest in triumphant rhetoric from Tehran over the capture of the unmanned aircraft two weeks ago.

Rear Adm. Ali Shamkhani, Iran's former defense minister, said Iran won't remain inactive to future incursions by foreign surveillance drones.

"If U.S. spy planes continue their aggression, we won't be idle," Shamkhani was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency. "We will continue to hunt down their spy planes,"

The comments were in response to U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta who said Wednesday during a visit to Afghanistan — from where the drone flew out — that the United States will continue to conduct intelligence operations such as the one that led to the loss of its RQ-170 Sentinel over Iran.

Iran has displayed the pilotless U.S. aircraft it captured over the country's east as a feat of its military in a complicated battle of technology and intelligence with America, and has rejected a formal U.S. request to return the drone, calling its incursion an "invasion" and a "hostile act."

Shamkhani, who currently runs an Iranian military strategic studies center, claimed the fact that Iran brought down the pilotless surveillance aircraft nearly intact proves his nation's technological prowess.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran's capture of this spy drone shows the high capabilities of our armed forces," he said.

American officials have said that U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Iran neither shot the drone down, nor used electronic or cybertechnology to force it from the sky. They contend the drone malfunctioned.

On Thursday, Tehran demanded that Afghanistan stop allowing the U.S. to use bases in the country to launch drone flights over Iran. Iran has said the drone was detected over the eastern town of Kashmar, some 140 miles (225 kilometers) from the Afghan border. Iranian state TV broadcast video last week of Iranian military officials inspecting the Sentinel.

American author and terrorism expert, Rachel Ehrenfeld, argues that the U.S. needs to keep spying on Iran but lamented the capture of the almost intact drone by the Iranians.

"I surely hope the U.S. is using all kind of techniques to spy on Iran. It's our enemy," she wrote in an email to The Associated Press in Tehran. "The shock is that President (Barack Obama) did not order the immediate destruction of the drone, instead he gave away one of the U.S. most advanced spying technologies."

why not make drones that can self detonate?!!

It is all so simple. The drone obviously malfunctioned and crashed to pieces at a location unknown to both Iran and the US.
The "drone" shown in the picture is in clearly a photograph of Donald Duck, retouched in Photoshop. It is common knowledge that an ox-cart technology like Iran is unable to compete with the international community when it comes to high end tech matters, least of all cyber war & hacking...

Most people know that neither Iran nor the good ole US of A are telling the complete truth.

stages of dealing with a loss. one) denial, two) anger, third) coming to terms with it and going back to doing what we do best, screwing people and the economy using banks and the wall street.

      There are two prevailing scenarios:
1- The Iranians took control of the plane and brought it down as they claim.
2- The plane malfunctioned and just went into autopilot but missed its home base.
If scenario No. 1 is correct then it will be foolish for the US to order a strike to destroy it. The reason for that is if we assume that Iran was able to detect the most sophisticated stealth plane then Iran should not have problems detecting other stealth planes and therefore it is unwise to make such a move.
If scenario No.2 is correct then the US should have destroyed it before the Iranians got to it. But if you think again, if the US is capable of destroying nuclear facilities hidden inside mountains then destroying a plane in some hanger should be a piece of cake.
Additionally, US presidents don’t take military decisions without the consultation of their military advisors. Therefore, I am sure that Obama was advised not to try to retrieve or destroy the plane because of the risk involved in such operations. Historically speaking, the US has always violated the airspace of other countries when it felt it was necessary to do so for its own security needs whether others approve of it or not.

Well it's not hard to figure out that this person we some people call the president of the USA is in fact just a person just wanting to destroy the US. I fear for our security of the country and think it is indeed time for a revolution. This man has put us in so much debt that it will take an act of OUR GOD to ever see the light of day. All he wants to do is disarm the American people so we can’t defend ourselves, Keep us poor, and did you notice that that the schools do not teach the youth of today anything about the history of how we the people use to defend this once a great nation. We used to be strong and feared. Not anymore. do you remember that we the people use to pick and choose the people to run this nation, Do you know that the electoral voting system was only supposed to be a temporary system and it is no way fair to the people who vote now. Every AMERICANs vote should be counted to make it fair for everyone. Something is really wrong in this country and it needs to be fixed and fixed NOW! Let your voice be heard for the people and by the people.

To all individuals and companies who need stealth drones:
We have established a company here to trap US stealth drones and resell it
to you eager customer, they are second hand but well kept and like a brand new
one, we have restored all software and hardware, GPS and everything in to
original version, we have even polished it and painted it to function even better.
a word for US government: we do not resell it to you, you proved to be not an honest
dealer, last time we did it you put a stuxnet in to it and made a lot of trouble
      for our customers.
a word for developers: you can develop your version of drones software
but be careful put an "if" statement in the program!

You are just another Ungreatful British Prick that lives in a free country thanks to the AMERICANS that gave their lives in defense of YOUR country! We should have let Germany wipe your #$%$ off of the face of the earth. Maybe you should ask your grandparents what life was like in WWii before "WE" came to your rescue!!!! With allies like England, America doesn,t need enemys

Ehrenfeld is incorrect. Iran is not our enemy. Iran poses absolutely no threat to the mighty United States. Iran is Israel's enemy (of its own choosing). She may be confusing the two.

Obama's demand to have the drone returned will come at the right time! Be patient everyone! This will show everybody the greatness of his foreign policies and political strength. It will show who will be next Commander in Chief! Of course by the time we get it back Iran, Russia, China, North Korea, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and hell even the Taliban will have all the secrets and know how to use it against the US. He sure was quick to have the Somali pirates killed, was quick to give orders that took out Osama, and he allowed the sale of arms for Fast and Furious. Just think of it, this is all happening in the time of the US troop pullout in Iraq and reduction of troops in Afghanistan. We all know the drones played a crucial role in Afghanistan and that he increased the drones use to hunt and kill. I does not make sense that an order of some response, be it military or some covert operation, was not given. Is there a ‘Trojan Horse’ in the White House?

This Ehrenfeld woman is a right wing, neo-con. No wonder she's trying to bad mouth Obama. If it's up to the president to react to eveything that happens in the military personally, we are in very bad shape. That $1 trillion dollars a year in defense expenditures is being wasted even more than I thought!
The more likely explanation is that the operator of the drone lost control of it because the Iranians somehow blocked the transmissions. If they couldn't reach the drone to give it orders, how could they self-destruct? You stupid cow!
    • rik g  •  Tampa, United States  •  5 mths ago
The shock is that President (Barack Obama) did not order the immediate destruction of the drone, instead he gave away one of the U.S. most advanced spying technologies. Why didn't we send in a Predator to destroy it? Duh. Does Iran really have the capability to thwart our drones? Didn't we know? Sounds like it. And Obama stands with Islam. He was born Muslim. He was brought up Muslim. When the time comes, he will stand with his Muslim Brotherhood. Afghanistan stands with Islam and Iraq.
    • bill  •  Washington, United States  •  5 mths ago
You have to be kidding! She's trying to blame Obama for not ordering the destruction of the drone? How many layers of military command does it take to give that order? It's not a presidential decision, surely.
If the drone could have been destroyed after its capture, I'm sure it would have been. Iran claims to have blocked the transmissions to the drone by its operators. How could anyone order the drone to do anything after that?
    • dusty  •  5 mths ago
      I'm sure I'm reaching ... Cuz I know BO isn't that smart ...
watch the movie Deterrence .... we can only hope BO is that smart

Wouldn't it be funny to all the people bashing the US for not having a self-destruct device in place on the drone if the drone in fact carries a virus. Maybe a virus that makes the Stuxnet virus look like a joke. As they try to break the encrypted Intel in the drone it in fact releases the virus and eventually mines all the info from any system it comes in contact with providing us more Intel. Also when it is done mining all Intel needed it either erases the host hard drive or puts US computer nerds in control of the system. Would bring the Iranian monkeys to a screeching halt.

Funny how naive people bash the government so quick for things. If that drone did not self destruct it is either because of the malfunction or blocking signal that brought it down or because we didn't want it to selfdestruct. There are many things that go on that are not reported on Yahoo news. Especially in time of war. Just keep in mind there may be things that are missing from a story, no point in tipping your hand to all enemies foreign and domestic.

Rachel Ehrenfeld, #$%$ Its off the self electronic tech. Any weekend remote model enthusiast and electronic gadget lover will tell you its not high tech. The US gov fly remote controlled jet fighter target drones with as much tech then this things and their for sell to anyone! The US high tech elec. intel devices are in manned airborne platforms and unmanned spaceborne platforms. The so called high tech uav stealth designs are for sell by north american, south american and european companies to the hightest bidders. The question should be, who wants to go to war with Iran and what is the real reason. If war is needed let it be for the right reasons. Whatever they are?
