Israel army kills Palestinian at West Bank barrier

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian who was trying to break through the West Bank separation fence, the army said Wednesday.

Three suspects were spotted at the fence near the West Bank city of Hebron, and one of them was cutting through it, the army said. The soldiers first called on the men to leave, then fired warning shots in the air, after which they fired at the legs of the one cutting the fence, the army added.

Soldiers took the wounded Palestinian to an Israeli hospital but he died of his wounds there, the military said.

Palestinian police identified the dead man as Yousef Shawamreh, 21, from the village of Dura near Hebron.

Israel says its concrete and fence separation barrier is needed to keep Palestinian attackers out of Israel. Palestinians say the barrier stifles their towns and villages and steals their land.
