Israel army plants new mines along Syria border

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's army is planting new land mines along its border with Syria in an attempt to dissuade protesters from rushing into the Golan Heights, according to a report in an Israeli military magazine.

The preparations come as part of Israel's beefed-up measures ahead of rallies that Palestinians are planning to hold in September, the magazine Ba'mahaneh reported over the weekend.

Israel came under heavy international criticism earlier this year after its troops opened fire on Syrians and Palestinians who broke through the fenced border into the Golan Heights during a pair of demonstrations. Around 35 protesters were killed.

Israel worries that the planned Palestinian demonstrations in September around their U.N. bid for independence could also see a new attempt to breach the Golan frontier.

The army decided to go ahead with the move after older mines failed to detonate when the Syrians crossed in June, the magazine reported. The mountainous plateau is heavily sown with minefields, which are marked. Military officials have said they are also preparing non-lethal methods for controlling any Golan protests.

"The activities are intended to thicken landed mines and strengthen obstacles," said Maj. Ariel Iluz of the engineering corps, according to the magazine.

"Combined with our military forces and snipers, these are supposed to delay or even prevent a lot of people from crossing the border," Iluz said.

A June demonstration protested Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights, a territory it seized in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed. The international community does not recognize its annexation.

Palestinians also staged a demonstration a month earlier to commemorate the uprooting of hundreds of thousands of Arabs during the war surrounding Israel's 1948 creation, an event Palestinians refer to as the nakba, or catastrophe.

The magazine did not say how many mines the army's engineering corps have planted so far, only saying the operation had been continuing for several weeks. An army spokesman was not available for comment.

The magazine reported that the military was taking other measures, including reinforcing fences along the Golan border, increasing infantry troop numbers, posting more snipers and digging trenches.

I was wandering...has anyone thought of using their brains to arrive at a peaceful solution rather than weaponry ? I think its becoming clearer now that no country can rely on its destructive capability once enough people have had enough. So I would not be too confident about its long term effectiveness. Maybe its time to start a real dialogue.

The US should plant land mines between lobbyists and congress.
      • Norman 9 mths ago
But what if those land mines blow up BOTH the lobbyists and the congressmen?

Great thought then maybe just maybe , We will again be the land of the people by the people and for the people.

It's quite ironic that we give away billions of dollars to Israel every year and they use that money to bomb and shoot unarmed refugees.

We should install a buffer zone on the US southern border...

"After a period of high tension between Israel and its neighbors, the war began on June 5 with Israel launching surprise air strikes against Arab forces...."

The land known today as the state of Israel was a barren wasteland a mere 63 years ago. Today, it is a productive, fertile and thriving center of commerce and technology. Her people's contributions to every facet of human achievement are many. Sounds an awful lot like the history of the U.S. What have the Arabs contributed to mankind in the last, say, five hundred years other than oil that, without western technology, would still be beneath the ground? And to those of you who say Israel would be nothing without U.S. aid, what would America be without the assistance of the French during her struggle for independence? Israeli land-grabbing? What about the U.S. slaughtering Native Americans and taking their land and relegating them to reservations? Talk about apartheid! Don't be a hypocrite but more importantly, choose your friends wisely.

LMAO, yeah right, and NOBODY even lived in the entire area until 1947! Just like how NOBODY lived in the entire Middle East until Jews 'freed' all this deserted land in 1947!! Even Jerusalem was DESERTED - since 6000 B.C.!!! Man, you guys are SO slick!!

Never said no one lived there. Just said it was a barren waste land...an unproductive toilet. Of course it was inhabitated by people.

two wrongs don't make a right; the way your going on, might as well take credit for landing on the moon.... you go ahead and do what you do...world history will write the truth about Israel..."choose your friends wisely" sounds like a threat...but then its only you...and I do choose my friends wisely and Israel will never be one.

"older mines failed to detonate when the Syrians crossed in June"
      Must been made in china.
Mines from WWII are still capable of detonating.
I suggest you make your own mines

Hello. most Jews were born outside of the Holy Land. According to your logic(?), none of them have any right to the Holy Land, since they were not born there? What? Can't have it both ways.

Yes, Susan, so barbaric to have a democracy dedicated to freedom and equality. So much better to express the jihadi need to destroy a sovereign nation in direct violation of the UN Charter. right...

I wish our military would plant mines along the entire Mexican border. Place them about a foot apart and don't bother wasting time or money putting up warning signs.
      • Howard 9 mths ago
Well, aren't you perfectly strange--and brutal.

      • Randy H 9 mths ago
@Perfect- It would have to be a foot apart, at least 10 feet wide, and about 2500 miles long! And I agree!
    • Archie  •  9 mths ago
I think we could take a lesson from isreal on how to secure the borders !
    • John C  •  9 mths ago
We need to use land mines on our southern border!!!
    • Sam  •  9 mths ago
Why is this suddenly a news? Countries in the state of war do protect their borders by planting a landmines. Nobody screams when South Korea mines it's border next to DMZ and it has the highest mines concentration per square mile in the world?
Or it's just because having word Israel in article immediately sells the parer?
AP has become as yellow as it can get and lives up to it's name of American Pravda

In addition, Master, any resolution to recognize the PA as a nation would be not only non-binding, but a violation of the same charter. After all, Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other groups holding more than 90% of the PA parliamentary seats have founding documents calling for Israel's destruction. That is a clear violation of the call for respecting the sovereignty of nations.

Do you believe that UN member nations should be bound by the UN Charter?

Sounds just like Reality Check Miller- Der Sturmer was running contests encouraging German children to write in. One little girl wrote, "People are so bothered by the way we’re treating the Jews. They can’t understand it, because they are God’s creatures. But cockroaches are also God’s creatures, and we destroy them."

Words can create an attitude. If a person says something loud enough and often enough, he creates a climate. And under that climate, all sorts of things can happen.

Blessed be the most high God of Israel!
      God bless you Benjamin Netanyahu!
I bless the land & people of Israel in the name of the Lord!!
Please remove the Russians from Jerusalem in Sergei's Courtyard. It was a horrible mistake to give away land in Jerusalem.
Please stop giving away land for peace, it has never worked and never will.
Thus saith the living God of Israel in Leviticus 25:23 The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.
      ***** Shalom Israel!!

Ahhh, Master, proving a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. You're exactly right, UNR181 was non-binding. It only took effect if the three parties agreed. Britain agreed that the Mandate ended. Israel agreed to two independent nations on the remaining 22% of the Mandate that wasn't judenrein Jordan, two nations granting equal rights to both Jews and Arabs.

However, the Arab Muslims don't believe in equal rights, or that land conquered through jihad should ever be returned to the infidels. They rejected UNR181, which they could do because it wasn't binding.

However, what is binding is the UN Charter. When the Arab League declared war on Israel in 1948 and invaded to destroy a sovereign nation, they were in clear and unambiguous violation of the binding UN Charter. They should have been suspended, but they weren't.

Unless you are willing to demand the Arab League, which is still in violation, be suspended according to that Charter, you are a hypocrite and a liar to demand anything of Israel based on your claims since.

Of course they're not interested pook, Islam forbids it We infidels may not question the Imams, the penalty for doing so is death. They, themselves, may not question their Imams, the penalty is death. They understand cut & paste, but can't begin to comprehend addressing fact based questions if that contradicts their hate filled fantasies. They're just mindless automatons in a cult of jihad and death.
