Would Israel attack Iran without U.S. approval?

Ehud Barak and Co. are ratcheting up their rhetoric as Iran's nuclear program continues unchecked — and many U.S. officials don't think our allies are bluffing

Israeli leaders are delivering their "bluntest warnings" yet of possible airstrikes to disable Iran's nuclear program, something the U.S. and other Western leaders fear would uncork dangerous turmoil in the Middle East. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak says time is running out to rein in Iran before it acquires nuclear weapons (although Tehran insists it only wants to produce nuclear energy). Leaders in the U.S. and Europe are hoping to push Iran to the negotiating table with a potentially devastating embargo on Iranian oil, though Israel appears unappeased. Despite President Obama's assurances that the U.S. is working in "lockstep" with its closest ally in the Middle East, would Israel take matters into its own hands and attack Iran without America's okay?

Israel might have no choice: The U.S. and its allies have "been pursuing diplomacy with the Iranians — for years now," says J. Robert Smith at The American Thinker. "What has that approach availed, other than buying time for the Iranians to proceed toward nuclear weapons capability?" More diplomacy and sanctions won't deter Iran's ruling mullahs. Washington might not get it, but Israel knows that "doing nothing — or delaying too long — may result in annihilation."
"Obama or the Israelis: Whom do you believe?"

Don't worry. Israel is probably bluffing: There are reasons to believe Israel's threats "are a bluff designed to spur tougher economic sanctions," says Edmund Sanders in the Los Angeles Times. Experts say "Israel's military lacks the size, breadth, and weaponry needed for the kind of sustained, multi-pronged bombing campaign" it would take to set Iran's nuclear quest back more than a year or two. And Israel's "tough rhetoric" may already be working, by pushing Europe and the U.S. to focus on Iran and impose oil sanctions.
"Israel's intentions toward Iran remain unclear"

Israel means what it says: U.S. officials "doubt that the Israelis are bluffing," says David Ignatius in The Washington Post. "Israeli leaders are said to accept, and even welcome, the prospect of going it alone" in order to demonstrate resolve as the Arab Spring undermines their security. Remember, Israel struck nuclear sites in Syria (2007) and Iraq (1981). If Iran doesn't back down, or if U.S. covert action doesn't do the job, Washington, for one, believes Israel will hit Iran's nuclear sites if that's the only way "to stop Iran from crossing the threshold."
"Is Israel preparing to attack Iran?"

What good will an Iranian oil sanctions do when China will buy every barrel they can produce?
      • Supream1 3 mths ago
Well that too will change Oh am not saying China will stop buying oil from
Iran infact that part of the plan.China will just cut its buying
See Steven the world want China to buy oil but at less amount this way Iran can just barely survive See the world does not want to kill 75 million people it just want to curve its action toward the rest of the 7 billion people See if Iran has only enought money to stay alive they cannot finance terrorist or did you not see or read ALI K. saying that Iran will support any groups that will help attack the West and Israel
      • Vanman2U 3 mths ago
According to news reports, China has been taking up the slack of the embargo by buying all of the oil it can get from Iran. Of course China is demanding deep discounts on the oil it omports. Basic law of supply and demand. Now if there were a NATO blockade of the Strait of Hormuz Iran would really be screwed.

Isnt the question"Is America allowed to not attack Iran without Israels approval"?
    • Mike  •  3 mths ago
Isreal will attack anytime it wants and will do the job right. The US should not do anything, just stay out of it. Isreal will kill everyone who is in the way and not charge their troops with any crime, unlike the US. Isreal knows the mind set of these people, most in the US do not. We think we can reason with these people but nothing could be furthur from the truth. They have 1 goal, to kill us and anyone who stands in their way, let isreal do its job.

The article is lame however news media here has quoted Obama as saying our intel also. Israel has some of the best Intel, You can bet it has already been checked and matched to our own. America or Israel wont use WMD's Iran may.

Good for Obama for staying out. Iran is not our problem. Their nukes cannot breach our defenses... No matter how Iran (or any other country) sends nukes at the US... missile, submarines, surface warships. cargo containers, fishing trawlers, etc,.... detection and interdiction programs already exist to pick them out as they cross the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans... some need more funding to be sufficiently reliable... Russia and China have ICBM technology that can defeat out defenses... but detection of radioactive devices is easy enough. Iran wil fail at any attack attempts against us.... But Israel doesn't have the safety of Oceans separating them from this threat.... they must act.
    • progressinator  •  3 mths ago
Ya think? Years ago, the Chief of the Israeli Air Force was asked how far his country would go to ensure that Iran didn't acquire a nuclear weapon. His response: 2000 kilometers.

was watching movies from the 80's & 90s where afghani & paki are the usa friends... hmmn, also noticed that they explained how russia failed to conquer & control those lands... i guess the government forgot all that when they decided to war against their buddies with the same failed tactics of the soviets... they still havent learned their lesson, they must enjoy selling military to those countries that just pack them away for use against the usa in the future.

For Israel to succeed in the war against Iran the use of limited nuclear weapon is unavoidable. Forget the big bunker-buster bombs, the use of a few KG TNT 'll guarantee that no human being set a foot around the suspected areas for at least half a generation. But that lead ...................?????

Mankind turning on each other in hatred and fear. This is the result of God's judging the earth. The Holy Spirit can remove the restraining hand of common grace and the earth will fill with bloodshed, the natural state of man will become apparent if such a thing would be. We fool ourselves as we puff up and claim we are advancing in our wisdom and ability to better ourselves...meanwhile we step back into a culture sickened in murdering our unborn and twisting the natural state the Lord has given us. The days of Noah are close so come Lord Jesus and ride your white horse of judgment! Save your people of all races as we call out on you for mercy. We are all godless in your sight and confess our treacherousness towards each other. We are hatefull and hating one another and only your power in Christ can translate our hearts over to the brightness of your glorious Son's love. Call out on Christ for a change in heart while mercy can be found in Christ.
