Israel: Nuclear Iran could deter military action

JERUSALEM (AP) — A nuclear Iran could make it tougher for Israel to act against enemies closer to home, a senior Israeli military official said Tuesday, suggesting that regional fallout would be broad should Tehran achieve bomb making capabilities.

Military planning division chief Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel said if Tehran attains atomic weapons, that could constrain Israel from striking Iranian-backed Islamist groups in Lebanon and Gaza, Hezbollah and Hamas.

"If we are forced to do things in Gaza or in Lebanon, under the Iranian nuclear umbrella it might be different," Eshel said at a briefing in Jerusalem.

He warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would set off an atomic arms race in the region, leading to "a global nuclear jungle."

Israel has been warning the world for years that Iran must not be allowed to develop the technology needed to build a bomb. It worries that a nuclear-armed Iran could threaten Israel's survival and has hinted it could strike Iran militarily if international sanctions do not halt nuclear development.

Iran claims its nuclear program is for energy production, not bomb making, and shows no sign of abandoning it.

Israel itself is assumed to have a large stockpile of nuclear weapons, and unlike Iran, it has not signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Based on photographs and material smuggled out of Israel's main nuclear reactor in the mid-1980s, experts concluded that Israel had several hundred nuclear warheads.

Israel has a policy of "ambiguity" concerning nuclear weapons. It refuses to confirm or deny their existence and insists it will not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East.

Eshel spoke to reporters at a time of rising global tensions around Iran's nuclear aspirations. Last week, an Iranian nuclear scientist died in a car bomb assassination in Tehran, the fourth attack on a member of Iran's nuclear team. Iran blamed the killing on Israel, which had no comment, and on the U.S., which denied involvement.

Iran has also threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, the conduit for one sixth of the world's oil, should international sanctions block Iranian petroleum exports.

Eshel also said Israel is worried that Syria's "huge stockpile of chemical weapons" could reach militant groups like Hezbollah if the regime of President Bashar Assad falls. He predicted that would happen soon.

O.K. folks this is going to be (or what I believe atm) is going to be my last post tonight as I have stuff to do. I want to leave the rational peace loving people with this thought.

The best way to defend yourself is NOT to be in a fight in the first place. If you unnecessarily start a fight that you end up being hurt in albeit win, then you end up leaving the fight with less than you would've had had you not been in the fight in the first place which is less than you had to begin with. Iran and Israel both know that if Iran were to unlawfully attack Israel unprovoked that the ENTIRE WORLD including myself would support Israel against it, and given the fact that much of the west is itching for a reason to attack it wouldn't risk its own obliteration. In fact there is no country in recorded history that with full knowledge that it would bring its own demise ever started a war, so to argue that Iran will be the first is an arbitrary statement with no source pool of data to draw a conclusion from. The same holds for all countries with nuclear weapons that have used proxies in conflicts which is ALL. None have ever given their weapons to any of their proxies (and many have used proxies throughout the years. Pakistan which is India's enemy has many proxies it could use against India, the US used the mujahadeen as a proxy against the Soviet Union and there are numerous other examples I can give) , so to argue that Iran will be the first (assuming it ever builds nuclear weapons) is again arbitrary and without a source pool of data to draw a conclusion from. Thus it can be said will reasonable certainty that Iran will not attack Israel if not attacked first, nor if it ever became a nuclear weapon state give a nuclear weapon to any proxy ESPECIALLY since the result would be the same i.e. Iran's obliteration. Israel knows this. Add to this the fact that Israel has hundreds of nuclear weapons, and Iran has never attacked or went to war with Israel nor has Iran attacked another country unprovoked in centuries. Given the weight of all these facts to claim Iran is going to attack Israel unprovoked is ARBITRARY.

Knowing this, if Israel still attacks Iran then it CERTAINLY isn't for defense (because like I said the best way to defend yourself is NOT to be in a fight in the first place), but because Israel wants something from Iran that doesn't belong to Israel. One doesn't need to like the other to live and let live, but the one who attacks FIRST will let us know who the villian/thief of this story is.

Good night and G-d Bless all.

Let's be even-handed in the Middle East. If Israel has nucs, then it's fine for Iran to have them. It might make the Zionists think twice before continuing to using Palestinian for target practice.

Preemptively attacking anyone who may or may not represent a threat at some future time is a really expensive way to run your foreign policy. It also can have unforeseen consequences. If we had not overthrown the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran and installed the Shah, there likely would have been no Iranian Islamic revolution, no hostage crisis, and no Iranian theocracy to begin with.
      • Dan 4 mths ago
There was no democratically elected Gov't in Iran! It's been one shah after another!

So how long do we have before someone finally drops the big bomb and sparks off the end of the world? How is it that the ones who are, and forever will be in charge are the ones that are the most unstable and unfit to lead? It disgusts me how out of control things have become. How ever did the world get like this?

Sounds more like a massive air assualt. We'll probably use half of our stockpile of new bunker-buster bombs. Nuclear weapons are more about infrastructure than fissile material. Syria is equally dangerous due to their large stockpile of chemical weapons... Weapons that can be smuggled ANYWHERE that you can take a thermos bottle.

if Israel attacks Irans nuclear program it will be the beginning of world war III and if we back them it will be our end - is it worth it to constantly protect Israel ?? i say hell no

than daniel, what if north korea would wage a war against south korea. would you say the same about not intervening??!! the south korea's security is based on the american army. there are a lot of U.S troops their. in israel-none. should america betray its allies or bury its head in the sand just like pre-WW2.

hilarious. Don sounds like he doesn't want war. Munkee obviously does want war.

EVER NOTICE, THEAT THE RELIGIOUS PEOPLE, AND OBAMA BASHERS WHO CLAIM TO BE CHRISTIAN..LOVE WAR?

READ EXODUS 23:23, JUDGES 21, NUMBERS 31 AND MANY OTHER BIBLE VERSES..AND YOU WILL FIND OUT..THAT THE BIBLE IS EVIL.

AND THAT EXPLAINS WHY RELIGIOUS PEOPLE LIKE MUNKEE, BIN LADEN, AND LIEBERMAN OF ISRAEL..ARE ALSO EVIL.
      • Don 4 mths ago
        You're right about that...I'm not religious...And I don't want a war!
    • Benito  •  4 mths ago
Acute Mind , you are only partly right . But however , why do you simply think Iran will get obliterated ? What makes you so sure that Iran won't fight back ?. And does any one have proof that Iran isnt already nuclear weaponised ? They could have bought a weapon from N.korea long ago ,or from russia . They have long hated Isreal yet have still not attacked, the same can't be said the other way round . You poem is right in many ways but Isreal and its allies simply want a region in which they can have some say in.
Eshrel of Isreal is saying the a Nuclear armed Iran will set off a nuclear arms race in the middle east but long before his statement , Isreal's policy of ''ambiguity'' on nukes and its insistence that it (isreal) would not be the first country to ''Introduce'' nuclear weapons in the middle east is quite contradictory.
    • MattM  •  Woodland Hills, California  •  4 mths ago
It's basic game theory. If Iran has a nuke, war is, in many cases, less likely. But while they're still in the process of building one, Israel wants to exploit their first strike advantage and take down Iran's nuclear facilities. But they need to look ahead to the future. Do they really think that they can keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon for all the rest of time? They have two options: war or peace. If they're too proud to seek the latter, then my only hope is that they go in alone and that they don't drag the US into that mess with them.

How you would react to the Head of Homeland Security if he or she were a dual national with citizenship in Iran, Lebanon or Saudi Arabia? Ask yourself why you don’t feel the same about Israeli dual citizenship.

The best example of dual citizenship can be seen by looking Jonathan Jay Pollard's story.
Pollard was an American-Israeli citizen who worked for the US government. He is well known because he stole more secrets from the U.S. than has any other spy in American history. During his interrogation Pollard said he felt compelled to put the “interests of my state” ahead of his own. Although as a U.S. Navy counter-intelligence specialist he had a top-secret security clearance, by “my state” he meant the state of Israel.

Tody, literally tens of thousands of Americans holding U.S. passports admit they feel a primary allegiance to the state of Israel. In many instances, these Americans vote in Israeli elections, wear Israeli uniforms and fight in Israeli wars. Many are actively engaged both in the confiscation of Palestinian lands and in the Israeli political system.

In a study several years ago about who really runs the American government, the following American-Isreali Dual Citizens serving in the American Government had been identified:
      1.Attorney General – Michael Mukasey
      2. Head of Homeland Security – Michael Chertoff
      3. Chairman Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board – Richard Perle
      4. Deputy Defense Secretary (Former) – Paul Wolfowitz
      5. Under Secretary of Defense – Douglas Feith
      6. National Security Council Advisor – Elliott Abrams
      7. Vice President Dick Cheney’s Chief of Staff (Former) – “Scooter” Libby
      8. White House Deputy Chief of Staff – Joshua Bolten
      9. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs – Marc Grossman
      10. Director of Policy Planning at the State Department – Richard Haass
      11. U.S. Trade Representative (Cabinet-level Position) – Robert Zoellick
      12. Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board – James Schlesinger
      13. UN Representative (Former) – John Bolton
      14. Under Secretary for Arms Control – David Wurmser
      15. Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board – Eliot Cohen
      16. Senior Advisor to the President – Steve Goldsmith
      17. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary – Christopher Gersten
      18. Assistant Secretary of State – Lincoln Bloomfield
      19. Deputy Assistant to the President – Jay Lefkowitz
      20. White House Political Director – Ken Melman
      21. National Security Study Group – Edward Luttwak
      22. Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board – Kenneth Adelman
      23. Defense Intelligence Agency Analyst (Former) – Lawrence (Larry) Franklin
      24. National Security Council Advisor – Robert Satloff
      25. President Export-Import Bank U.S. – Mel Sembler
      26. Deputy Assistant Secretary, Administration for Children and Families – Christopher Gersten
      27. Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Public Affairs – Mark Weinberger
      28. White House Speechwriter – David Frum
      29. White House Spokesman (Former) – Ari Fleischer
      30. Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board – Henry Kissinger
      31. Deputy Secretary of Commerce – Samuel Bodman
      32. Under Secretary of State for Management – Bonnie Cohen
      33. Director of Foreign Service Institute – Ruth Davis

Mind you, this is a small percentage of names on the list and there are numerous spies that I could name. The only question is why do Jews have a special claim to dual citizenship which have been denied by the Supreme Court to Mexicans and other nationalities :O

War is a very expensive and unpredictable way to solve a dispute. Does anyone remember Cheney reacting in disbelief at the suggestion that the Iraq war could go on for years and cost hundreds of billions of dollars? He was right to react in disbelief. It went on for a decade and cost over a trillion and counting. Iran possibly developing a nuclear weapon is not good, but Israel and Iran at war is worse.

A nuclear Iran will bring about peace and stability in the ME. There has to be another power to counter nuclear armed Israeli. Israel is a country that has been at war with Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and still occupies their land. Iran has not invaded a single country as yet. So if a choice is to be made as to who should have nuclear weapons in the ME between these 2 countries, it should be Iran.
