    Israel test fires missile that can hit Iran

    JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel successfully test-fired on Wednesday a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and striking Iran, fanning a public debate over whether the country's leaders are agitating for a military attack on Tehran's atomic facilities.

    While Israeli leaders have long warned that a military strike was an option, the most intensive round of public discourse on the subject was ignited over the weekend by a report in the Yediot Ahronot newspaper that said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak favor an attack.

    That was followed by a report in the Haaretz daily Wednesday that Netanyahu is now lobbying Cabinet members for an attack, despite the complexity of the operation and the high likelihood it would draw a deadly retaliation from Iran. An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was discussing a sensitive policy discussion, said Netanyahu does not yet have a majority.

    An Israeli defense official told The Associated Press that the military tested a "rocket propulsion system" in an exercise planned long ago. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of security restrictions, and declined to give further information.

    Further information about the test was censored by the military. Foreign reports, however, said the military test-fired a long-range Jericho missile — capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and striking Iran.

    Israel considers Iran its most dangerous threat. It cites Tehran's nuclear program, its ballistic missile development, repeated references by the Iranian leader to Israel's destruction and Iran's support for anti-Israel militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

    Iran denies the allegations that it aims to produce a bomb, saying its nuclear program is meant only to produce energy for the oil-rich country. It has blamed Israel for disruptions in its nuclear program, including the mysterious assassinations of a string of Iranian nuclear scientists and a computer virus that wiped out some of Iran's nuclear centrifuges.

    Israel has repeatedly said that it hopes economic sanctions will persuade Iran to halt its nuclear program. Israeli diplomats have been lobbying the international community for tougher sanctions.

        Having a knife in your hand may not scare people, but your attempt to get one will scare the hell out of them if they know you are a violent psychiatric case. That is the difference. I am sure you don't need to be told that Iran poses a threat not only to Israel, it's first and principal target, but also to the rest of its neighbours. That is the big difference.

      Go for it, Israel! That regime in Iran is a cancer to everyone and should be destroyed. They talk tough, but like Arabs everywhere, when it comes to actually fighting, they are all cowards who prefer beating up their women to facing an enemy on the battlefield.

        exactly, Israel took our Iraqs nuclear capability in 1981, the world cursed them, but look at Saddam 10 years later, after he was sent back from Kuwait he began a scorched earth policy, you think he wouldn't have used Nukes?

        and Israel took out Syria nuclear plants in 2007, now look at that regime, they are hated by their people, that guy has stated he will destroy the mid east if NATO begins bombing them, what do you think he would do with Nukes

      @ David..........Israel, a Threat to Iran ??? Given the standing threat of annihilation against them, and the fact that Iran knows full well if they screw around with Israel, they are going to live to regret it.......from the stone age.........Israels' record is one of self-defense, and they have flat kicked some Arab #$%$ in the past, and will not hesitate to do so again if provoked. This current debacle over the West Bank, Gaza et. al. is a can of worms that no one can agree on, antagonized by diverse troops of radical islamists playing both ends against the middle. Names Obvious.........Iran, Formerly Persia, attacked plenty of sovereign nations first, many in the name and forcible advancement of Islam. Get your history and facts straight bubba.

      Somebody below pointed out that there is a double standard in terms of world reaction to Iran and Israel when they test missiles. There is not. Only one of these countries has openly and repeatedly threatened its neighbors with war and destruction. Israel has never sought war with any other country and has only acted to protect itself from attack. Iran has repeatedly threatened the US and Israel, attempted to take over Iraq, supports terror around the world, attacks Israel on a daily basis through its proxies Hamas and Hezbollah, encourages and bankrolls terrorism around the world, etc. . . Only one of these countries is a threat to others. Therefore, when Iran tests a missile and states their intent to use it to commit genocide, there is reason for the rest of the world to react.
