Israeli archaeologists: tiny Christian relic found

JERUSALEM (AP) — A tiny, exquisitely made box found on an excavated street in Jerusalem is a token of Christian faith from 1,400 years ago, Israeli archaeologists said Sunday.

The box, carved from the bone of a cow, horse or camel, decorated with a cross on the lid and measuring only 0.8 inches by 0.6 inches (2 centimeter by 1.5 centimeter), was likely carried by a Christian believer around the end of the 6th century A.D, according to Yana Tchekhanovets of the Israel Antiquities Authority, one of the directors of the dig where the box was found.

When the lid is removed, the remains of two portraits are still visible in paint and gold leaf. The figures, a man and a woman, are probably Christian saints and possibly Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

The box was found in an excavation outside the walls of Jerusalem's Old City in the remains of a Byzantine-era thoroughfare, she said. Uncovered two years ago, it was treated by preservation experts and extensively researched before it was unveiled at an archaeological conference last week.

The box is important in part because it offers the first archaeological evidence that the use of icons in the Byzantine period was not limited to church ceremonies, she said.

Part of a similar box was found three decades ago in Jordan, but this is the only well-preserved example to be found so far, she said. Similar icons are still carried today by some Christian believers, especially from the eastern Orthodox churches.

The relic was found in the City of David excavation, a Jerusalem dig named for the biblical monarch believed to have ruled a Jewish kingdom from the site.

The politically sensitive dig is located in what is today the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, just outside the Old City walls in east Jerusalem, the section of the holy city captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war and claimed by the Palestinians as their capital.

How wonderful and lucky that it was found by people who respect others and didn't destroy it

Many of the Christian Palestinians today follow the Byzantine rite as the official religion of Palestine, ruled by Byzantium, was the Eastern, today also called Greek Orthodox or Greek Catholic. They are descendants of the first Christians. This is a very important find for them.
      • FrankT 6 mths ago
But sadly, Palestinian Christians are being persecuted by their fellow Muslim brethren. The town of Bethlehem lost 50% of its Orthodox/Greek Rite Christians

Do Muslims EVER live in true harmony with Christians. How can they really--they are told by their religion to hate the infidel or to convert him. I am disgusted that Christians in the Middle East who have lived there JUST AS LONG as the whiny Muslims are now being PERSECUTED by their neighbors in Egypt, in Iraq, in Palestine, in Turkey!!! The US press never covers this. The Arab spring is BAD NEWS, and is really an Islamist Winter of misery.

In islam there is sort of a limbo called "people of the Book" at best tolerated as second class. Required to give way literaly to muslims, allowed to exist in exchange for payment of a ruinous head tax to insure that at best they barely make out ahead when times are good.

poor sting ray, his own religious hatred blinds him to his own lies. Of course, Jews were in the area in large numbers when the Arabs invaded, the Muslim jihadis themselves recorded it. Jews remained in the area for the entire occupation, though many expelled were not allowed back.

Sting Ray's god claims that's good, that whatever Islam wants is automatically correct and may not be questioned.

As to his claims about Palestine, let me quote a few Arabs.

Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee member Zahir Muhsein.: "The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism."

Ahmed Shukeiry, a PLO founder: "It is common knowledge that Palestine is nothing but southern Syria".

Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi, a local Arab leader, to the Peel Commission in 1937: "There is no such country (as Palestine)! Palestine is a term the Zionists invented! There is no Palestine in the Bible. Our country was for centuries part of Syria."

Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, Mayor of Jerusalem, in 1899: "Who can challenge the rights of the Jews to Palestine? Good Lord, historically, it is really your country."

It is always wonderful to learn from the past. Now, if we could only remember and live in peace! There are populations that have nothing else to do but think and make war. If they could only think of other ways to better their societies, what a wonderful world this would be. Ignorance makes people think of war. Most educated people think of better things to do with their time and money. If all the money the world is spent on wells, on housing for people, in teaching how to grow food, this would be a better world. Only ignorant and stupid people like to think how to blow up their neighbors. They have nothing else to do with their time.

These relics should tell them Christians were and are real believers and followers in Israel and not just a tourist trade. I would like to see the fishes' mosaic tile piece they found in Megaddo (sp) 10 years ago or so. Very cool.

    • roy  •  6 mths ago
Amir how many relics have you kept in your possession instead of turning them into museums of antiquity. As I remember the muslims of afghanistan blew up to magnificent Buddas as they did not like them. Following that behavior you would probably destroy any Christian or Jewish relic as it you need to destroy others so you can solidify that which you wish to steal.

Good news that an Israeli found it. The Pals trashed the Tomb of Joseph in Nablus and cut off all Jewish access to it. They looted the tomb and smashed up the building. Now monthly visits to the tomb in bullet-proof vehicles under heavy IDF protection are organised by the Shechem Ehad group. In late April 2009, a group of Jewish worshipers found the headstone smashed and swastikas painted on the walls, as well as boot prints on the grave itself. The Pals destroy any sign of ancient Jewish occupation they find.
