Israeli FM says Abbas is 'obstacle' to peace

JERUSALEM (AP) โ€” Israel's foreign minister charged Monday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is an "obstacle" to peace and that he hopes Abbas will soon resign.

The comments by Avigdor Lieberman drew an angry response from Palestinians, who accused him of calling for an assassination and appealed to the United States and the European Union to intervene.

In a briefing with reporters, Lieberman lashed out at the Palestinian leader, saying Abbas has been leading a campaign to delegitimize Israel internationally and that he has become an "obstacle that needs to be removed."

Abbas is leading a drive for U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state. On Monday his envoy urged the world body not to delay acting on the Palestinian request. Israel and the United States fiercely oppose the bid, saying independence can be reached only through negotiations.

Peace talks have been largely frozen for more than two years. They broke down the last time over the issue of construction in Israeli settlements.

In the past, Abbas has repeatedly threatened to resign if there is no progress in peace efforts. Lieberman called on him to carry out his threat.

"He has been threatening to return the keys and resign? That would not be a threat but a blessing, and I wish he would finally do it," Lieberman said. "Whoever comes after him will be better ... there is no lack of Palestinians who studied in the West โ€” educated people with Western values with whom we can talk."

Lieberman said that despite Abbas' moderate image, he was naming public squares after terrorists, handing out money to killers who were released in last week's prisoner swap and calling for a future Palestinian state that was free of Jews.

Lieberman added that Abbas was concerned only about his personal survival after the overthrow of his "friends" in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

"That is very understandable, but it doesn't help in reaching an agreement," he said.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, a top aide to Abbas, fired back, calling Lieberman the "most extreme, racist person in Israel."

"Lieberman is an enemy of peace and he should be condemned by every rational voice in Israel," he said. "If this position represents or reflects the policy of this government, that means that they intend to wage a political war. The Israeli government should apologize for what the foreign minister said."

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat added that Lieberman's comments amounted to incitement and could be interpreted as a call to assassinate Abbas. He said he relayed that message to Americans and Europeans as well.

It wasn't clear whether Lieberman was expressing his own opinion or government policy. He's spoken out of step with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before, most notably when he told the United Nations that there was no point in negotiating with Palestinians โ€” just as peace talks were being relaunched in September 2010.

A Netanyahu spokesman refused to comment Monday.

Lieberman is known for his fiery nature and outspoken criticism of Palestinians. He's also a contentious figure because of his support for redrawing Israel's borders to push areas with heavy concentrations of Israeli Arabs out of Israel and into Palestinian jurisdiction. He also launched a failed effort in parliament to force Israeli Arabs to take a loyalty oath or lose their citizenship.

Lieberman said he was "100 percent" sure that the establishment of a Palestinian state in the current climate would lead to rocket attacks against major Israeli population centers. Gaza militants have fired thousands of rockets at Israel since Israel's pullout in 2005.

He also vowed that there would be no settlement construction slowdown. He noted that the settlements made up less than two percent of the West Bank and therefore "have never been an obstacle to peace."

There are Christians, Jews and Muslims that are good and bad. A lot of Jews say Zionist have hijacked the Jewish religion. I have protested with Jews against Israeli treatment of Palestine. I have also been at different protest where People waving the Israeli flag were supporting Israel over Palestine. I think itโ€™s just as true there are people who hijack Islam using religion to do bad. The bottom line people of all religions have people that want to use religion to fill some agenda. So how can we tell whoโ€™s right and wrong. International law is a great guide. Itโ€™s a good guide because the lawโ€™s goal is fair and humane treatment of all people. Faith is good if used for good used for some self fulfilling agenda that harms otherโ€™s is doing just that harming others. Israel you need to obey international law. We ( Americans) need to elect people that respect international law. Itโ€™s a better way to solve problems than war.

I don't care what you or anybody else would say. The entire world would tell you "that the best jew is a dead jew" If the jews were any better, and going back to the beginning of time, there should be billions of them now. How come there is only a handfull of them. Six million during WWI and the rest will parish in WWIII which happens to be around the corner...! Don't fool yoursrlf, you can never tame the jews

I just wonder how 5.5 million Jewish people in Israel can create so much chaos?

There are over 11 million jews in the so-called israel. Six million went there from the Soviet Union. Don't be fooled. Why do you think that the jews are doing everything in there power to keep all the land they have occupied and keep building settlements all over the Palestinian lands!

Israel FM - Avigdore Lieberman- a pre Russian communist Jew? Asking for the resignation of officially popular, majority palestinian elected president Abbas to resign his post for asking the united nation to free palestine from the clause of the Jews? What's wrong with this statement? How could you achieve peace with statements like that from both sides?

the answer is there aren't any prosperous muslim countries that dont have oil. The amazing thing is how little the rich arabs help out the poor ones..
      • Marmar 7 mths ago
It is amazing because the Gulf oil states do have the cash.

I find it impossible to come up with anything positive to say about Lieberman...or Abbas, or most def. Hamas. What I don't get & have yet to have anyone clarify for me is just who would govern if the Palestinians were recognized as a state.Their leadership is fractured to put it mildly & they'd just as soon like to see each other rot. So who leads?
      • Marmar 7 mths ago
I'm not a big fan of Lieberman either, but I do like the way he gets the arabs all knotted up. :-)

Liberman resigning would remove another obstacle... but the truth is, no one person can either hold the peace process back or to move it forward - it's a much more global issue with other players like Iran and Syria and Saudi Arabia having a stake and wanting no part in the peace process.

Who listens to someone that says there is no Palestine yet they want to sit down and make peace with it . . . . .

Just one more reason to stop send billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to Israel. Whether they spend it here or somewhere else, it is still U.S. taxpayer dollars and money that we need here. Today's headlines read that FEMA has no money to take care of U.S. citizens. I suggest we start by cutting all U.S. foreign aid money (for every country) and take care of our own people. U.S. funding allows someone like Lieberman to behave like he does.

To the person who posted that there is not one kind thing written about Muhammad in all Islam. Wrong. And here is my favorite account:
Muezza (or Muสฟizza) (Arabic: ู…ุนุฒุฉโ€Ž) was Muhammad's favorite cat. Muhammad one day awoke at the sound of the call to prayer. Preparing to attend, he began to clothe himself; however, he soon discovered Muezza sleeping on the sleeve of his robe. Rather than wake her, he used a pair of scissors to cut the sleeve off, leaving the cat undisturbed. When he returned from prayers, the prophet received a bow from Muezza in thanks. He then stroked his beloved cat three times. Due primarily to the love Muhammad displayed for Muezza, Muslims are traditionally encouraged to regard cats as lovable and cherished creatures. Mistreating an animal is seen as among the most severe of all crimes in Islam.

AND..if all religions these days believe in only one God...and I think they all do believe in just one God.....one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to conclude that it is probably ALL THE SAME GOD. Muslims and jews.....you all believe in the SAME GOD. Quit killing each other...make love instead!!

When was the last time Native Abu said the truth? Hell, he's not even a real native American. He's admitted in the past that he's a Palestinian and he lies constantly. While at the same time he says that Israel lies.

      What a hypocrite.
