Israeli minister warns Iran strike is possible

JERUSALEM (AP) โ€” Israel's defense minister warned on Tuesday of a possible Israeli military strike against Iran's nuclear program and rejected suggestions the Jewish state would be devastated by an Iranian counterattack.

Ehud Barak spoke a day before the United Nations' nuclear agency was expected to release a critical report on the Iranian program. The report is expected to implicate Iran in bomb building and erase doubts about the nature of the program, which Iran says is designed to produce energy, not weapons.

Barak told Israel Radio he didn't expect the International Atomic Energy Agency report to persuade Russia and China to impose what he called "lethal" sanctions on Iran to pressure Tehran to dismantle its nuclear installations.

"As long as no such sanctions have been imposed and proven effective, we continue to recommend to our friends in the world and to ourselves, not to take any option off the table," he said. He stressed that no decision to attack has been made.

The "all options on the table" phrase is often used by Israeli politicians to mean a military assault.

The U.N. has imposed four rounds of sanctions on Tehran, but none has succeeded in curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions. On Tuesday, Barak suggested adding a naval blockade that would cut off Iran's economic lifeline, oil.

Israel views Iran as its greatest threat because of its nuclear program, its missiles, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's repeated references to the destruction of the Jewish state and Iran's support for Palestinian and Lebanese militant groups.

Israeli leaders have sent out signals recently that military action is on the agenda. An official told The Associated Press last week that the Israeli Cabinet has discussed the matter, with Barak and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in favor of taking action. An Israeli missile test last week, combined with an announcement of a special air force drill in Italy, further raised speculation.

With the IAEA report approaching, it is unclear whether the leaks are true threats or merely a pressure tactic to push the international community to take decisive action โ€” particularly given the risk that an Israeli attack on Iran would carry.

With most of its population concentrated in a narrow corridor of land along the Mediterranean, Israel's home front could be vulnerable to a counterattack if Israel were to strike.

An Israeli attack would also likely spark retaliation from Iran and local Iranian proxies, the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip to Israel's south and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon along Israel's northern border. Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah all possess formidable rocket and missile arsenals.

Barak lashed out against the recent reports suggesting that he and Netanyahu were intent on attacking Iran, over the objection of Israeli defense chiefs. He also accused critics of fear mongering by warning of mass Israeli casualties in the case of an Iranian missile strike.

"This outlandish depiction (by the media) of two people, the prime minister and the defense minister, sitting in a closed room and leading the entire country into an adventurist operation is baseless and divorced from reality," he said.

A larger forum of Cabinet ministers would have to make that decision โ€” if it is made at all, he said. "We haven't decided yet to embark on any operation," he said. "We don't want war."

But if Israel is dragged into one, he said, "I tell you there won't be 100,000 casualties, and not 10,000 casualties and not 1,000 casualties," he said. "And Israel won't be destroyed."

In 1981, Israel stunned the world with an airstrike on an unfinished nuclear reactor in Iraq that destroyed Saddam Hussein's nuclear program. Israeli warplanes also destroyed a site in Syria in 2007 that the U.N. nuclear watchdog deemed to be a secretly built nuclear reactor, though Israel never acknowledged responsibility for the attack.

Iran's program would be significantly more difficult to cripple because its facilities are scattered, and some are mobile and some built underground.

Come on America. Wake up to what is being done to you.

In the 50's a democratically elected government in Iran was ousted and replaced the by The Shah.
Who armed and funded him? The U.S., The U.K., France and Isreal. Why? Because that government had declared that they would look after their own interests ahead of those of western countries.
The Shah's regime was not democratic. It was despotic. Brutally putting down any dissenters.
What was the outcome of this? It became radicalised by islamic extremists because they were looking for an alternative to a brutal western imposed regime.

So what next? Arm Iraq so that they go to war with Iran and help to supress this new anti-western regime.

Also arm the Mujahaddeen (later the Taliban) in Afghanistan in their war with the Soviets.

Iraq's regime, then get's the idea that they don't want to deal in dollars for their oil. Plus want to invade kuwait, which had previously been annexed after WWII.

We go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan. And probably quite soon, Iran as well?

Why not Syria? Why not Saudi Arabia? Their regimes are just as undemocratic and despotic. Maybe because they allow easy western access to their oil.

So the end result? Our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters fight and die on foreign soil so that a few short sighted greed inspired people in our countries can get rich whilst poor families send their love ones to die.

Is this the democracy you believe in?

A lot of people here are immature... Israel is ten times stronger than Iran sure, but as you saw with Hezbollah, Israel is not immune to attack. Iran has a standing army 4 times the size of the IDF, has more tanks than Israel, and has fighter jets, artillery and balllistic missiles. Sure they are old and cold-war era relics, but even old hardware causes many casualties.

Not only that, but you risk turning the entire region once again against israel. Forget the protests in Syria or Yemen, they will band together and condemn Israel. This would be one of the dumbest things Israel could do, and would guarantee Palestine not only gets a state, but aid from China/Russia as well.

There is not a single Arab country in the Gulf that wants Iran to have nuclear weapons.
They don't have the stones to publicly admit they hope Israel or the U.S. will take out Irans nuclear mission and they will remain quiet until Israel acts then they will be in the streets screaming death to Israel ,burning the American flag and calling America the great satan to save Arab face yet be very relieved if Irans nuclear ambition is crippled or destroyed

Why have none of the Arab Gulf States made any public statements on this matter ?
The last thing they want is a nuclear armed Iran.
The Russians have made billions upon billions helping Iran in their nuclear quest and don't want that river of money shut off.
Iran will continue to need Russian,North Korean and Pakistans support and assistance for years to come in developing their nuclear arsenal which means huge money for them.

China needs Irans oil to continue it's expansion and development which makes them unwilling to speak out against a nuclear armed Iran.
Both Russia and China will veto harsh meaningful sanctions for their own selfserving reasons.
This being the case leaves Israel very little choice but to strike Iran.
It would be foolish to think that Israel will not act since Iran has made the threat to wipe them off the map and constantly calls for their complete destruction.
Israel is not going to allow that to happen.

All players have a huge stake in this dangerous game, each with their own agenda making a diplomatic solution almost impossible and Iran is very well aware of this.
The whole world knows a nuclear armed Iran is a major threat to the entire Middle East and possibly Europe.
Iran is not an Arab nation yet the Arab nations in the Gulf for face saving reasons can never publicly support or back anything Israel does but you can bet the farm they are all hopeing and praying Israel takes out Irans nukes.

i hope we stay out of this, because i think israel will handle it a lot better than we would. we would start out by dropping several million dollars in bombs, then several million in drones, then finally 100,000 troops, then 200,000 troops and 10 years later with little accomplished we would talk about pulling out for the next 10 years. please! let israel handle, they did before quite nicely.

Guess NOBODY believes that bogus, politically motivated 2007 National Intelligence Estimate now, that Iran gave up their nuke weapons program in 2003. Is Obama getting ready to bomb Iran?
