Israeli religious party denies coalition crisis

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's top religious partner said Wednesday that Israel's ruling coalition would not be shaken by the Supreme Court's annulment of a contentious law allowing ultra-Orthodox Jewish men to avoid military service.

The military exemptions are resented by Israel's secular majority and have been a major source of conflict between the two communities. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court overturned the so-called Tal Law, saying that it failed to encourage more ultra-Orthodox to perform compulsory military service or alternative community service.

Because provisions for the exemptions weren't enforced, the percentage of ultra-Orthodox who did not serve in the military grew rather than shrank in the decade since the law was passed. The law, the court ruled, "did not meet expectations, nor did it lead to the required changes ... concerning an equal sharing of the burden."

The court's decision set off speculation the two ultra-Orthodox parties in Netanyahu's coalition might pull out and bring down the government, possibly leading to the formation of more moderate government or new elections.

But the larger of the two parties, the Shas, dismissed that scenario on Wednesday.

Shas Party spokesman Yakov Betzalel said he was confident seminary students would continue to pursue religious studies rather than serve, and expressed hope a new military exemption deal would be struck that would meet the court's standards.

Asked if a coalition crisis could ensue from Tuesday's court ruling, Betzalel replied, "No, no, no. I don't see it in the offing."

He predicted the new law would be similar to the current legislation, "with minor changes."

"From my experience, the ultra-Orthodox community will not accept even short-term enlistment," he said, adding he did not envision all seminary students performing community service as an alternative, "but let's see what will happen."

Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Shas leader Eli Yishai later Wednesday to discuss the ruling, he said.

According to activists in the ultra-Orthodox community, tens of thousands of religious men are currently exempt from Israel's compulsory draft. Israel's two biggest newspapers, Yediot Ahronot and Maariv, reported that more than 62,000 were exempted in 2010.

The Tal Law has emerged as a significant challenge to Netanyahu in recent months. It had already been extended once for five years and was due to expire again in August. The prime minister originally had hoped to extend it again, but faced stiff opposition from Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and others in his coalition.

Lieberman told Army Radio on Wednesday that the court ruling "helps the coalition understand it finally has to take decisions rather than waffle."

Netanyahu said in a statement Tuesday that his government would "formulate a new law that will lead to a more just change in the burden of all sectors of Israeli society."

The prime minister is likely eager to avoid a coalition crisis at this time, when his primary interest is containing Iran's nuclear program. Israel, like the West, rejects Tehran's claims that it is developing nuclear energy, not bombs.

An impending shift in the court could also ease things for the ultra-Orthodox. Incoming Chief Justice Asher Grunis said in a minority opinion Tuesday that the court shouldn't intervene on the law.

Seems like a simple solution to me. If you won't defend the country you shouldn't be able to participate in its government. How they got away with it this long is a mystery to me.

According to their belief, sitting and Studying Torah is a way of defending the land, it helps make sure G-D is not angry and Israel and will help Israel defend it's land. It seems to have worked so far.

@ Native: I've served as a volunteer in the IDF and also in the California ANG. As to your point about all Jews not serving in the military, do you honestly think, in reality, that their neighbors would allow them to live in peace? If the entire Israeli Army was out of business tomorrow, would the other side do the same? I have no reason to think they would.

I can agree that isreal has the right to protect civilians. I can agree that there are extremists that will always want to harm israel. But I can attest, that most people after decades of stagnation would like to walk their children to school with out any wars or violence from either side. Most all people want peace and the chance to give their children and family the best they can in the one short life we have to give.

The solution is simple, but getting there is not easy. May we see real peace in our days.

OetG: I am always intrigued by your impression of history. Let's see, you claim Israel "precipitated war" at it's birth? Humm, the British left, the land was to be divided between a Jewish nation and an Arab nation. Yet history shows the Arab League invaded Israel, not the other way around. Feel free to check any unbiased history. Israel has large standing armed forces? Well, yes, yes it does. But which government's charter calls for destroying it's neighbor? How yeah that would be PLA and HAMAS. I often wonder when I read your posts if facts, history and reality have any meaning to you?

David spends his time telling us why what Palestinians have done to others. How nice to remind us that they do have a right to protect their families from people like David.

Seeing as how their messiah never showed up, I guess they need a good military force.

Just another example of governments and churches wrecking life of the people by using religion and fanatical believers.

Somebody should slap those stupid looking hats off of those jews heads. I have seen the jews here in the usa,and they are as obnoxious, and arrogant as any muslim. Isn't it ironic, that moses was raised with arabs, and they couldn't tell the difference.

Scientifically proving the nonexistence of god
      (A thought experiment)

      Hypothesis:
Either God is supernatural bereft from all actions in the bible or God is natural and the bible actually happened.

      Test & Result (A&B):
      A
With God being supernatural; then it’s outside of anyone’s reality so it can’t and doesn’t have an effect in the reality that it is supernatural to. If the God was able to affect that the natural reality then the God wouldn’t be supernatural it would be natural therefore proving the first claim to be incorrect.
      B
With God being real and everything in the bible did actually happen. Then why does the church want you to have acquiescence in God’s supposed environmental effect on your reality. It’s your reality regardless of your belief in God proving the second claim to be erroneous.

      Conclusion:
Human beings are relevant to their Nature or their Universe, so any mental constructs or ideas are human devised to gratify their ego or the egos of others that are non-existent by definition. A bible is a book of authoritativeness. You have to believe every thing in your bible for it to be true. You can’t cherry pick certain sections and just believe them and lay claim the whole bible as truth. The holy bible and science don’t agree so one of them is incorrect. The Holy bible is incorrect because it can’t completely explain reality through the use of its laws. Science is better at explaining the sets of parameters that must established so can you can come to understand your universal materiality not the Adolf Hitler religion of Christianity.

So they don't serve in the military, shun modernity, and are making babies at a record pace because let's face it, when you're not working or serving your country you have a lot of time on your hands. Conclusion: the future of Israel's democracy is threatened from within. This country is like country by committee, I swear. You couldn't make up these unfortunate scenarios. Good luck Israel, and please, don't invade Iran. So what if they get the bomb. What're they going to do withi it. You could reduce that country to ash 10 times over and they know it. So relax, and let the world lick it's economic wounds.

Imagine if all jews went Orthodox and stopped serving the military? Hey David, have your served isreal yet?

David Rosenthal is a "megaphone desktop" bot. It's a particularly pernicious initiative of the broader hasbara program that recruits and trains Jews to post aggressively in favor of Israel. Although we've seen that the comments don't have to be intelligent.

Israel also gives scholarships to students who will speak out and agitate for Israel and shout down any "enemies of Israel" in American universities.

Asking what a specific Religion has given to the world is laughable as all people who believe in their faith believe it to be good.

Normal people don't want war...they don't want to die.
Mandatory millitary service is for nations that have to brainwash their populations to kill.

Why not start making economic partnerships and treating the Arabs with respect and dignity?
You would likely see a drastic requirement for a standing army to defend stolen lands.
