Italian Cruise Ship Search for Bodies Done by Touch in Complete Darkness

Divers scouring the toppled Italian cruise ship are working in darkness so complete that they search for bodies by touch.

The description of the laborious search came today from Sara and John Heil, who are at the site awaiting word that the bodies of their parents have been found.

"As the days come and go we find this to be such an extreme test of our patience," they said in a statement released late Wednesday. "We so badly want Mom and Dad to be found so we can bring them home."

Their parents, Jerry and Barbara Heil, are the only Americans still missing from the Jan. 13 crash that partially sank the luxury ocean liner Costa Concordia. Sixteen people have been confirmed dead and another 16 are still missing.

"We continue to monitor first-hand the ongoing search efforts taking place in Italy," the family said. "The conditions in which the divers are forced to operate are undoubtedly making this a very slow process."

The Heil family statement said they have been told that divers are working in an area of the huge ship where they believe they might find the missing bodies. The area is under 60 feet of water, making it a time consuming operation to get to the search area.

The return to the surface is also done slowly to allow the divers time to decompress. Because of the depths, divers are restricted in how frequently they can dive down to the search area.

The most difficult part of the search, however, is the murky conditions in which they are working.

"Due to the depth and the fact that they are inside the ship, they are searching in complete darkness and the visibility is approximately one foot. We can only imagine that much of their searching must be done 'by feel' inside a ship that is over 900-feet long and may have up to 17 floors," they said in their statement.

"The term 'needle in a haystack' certainly seems like an appropriate comparison. We continue to pray for the safety of those searching and express our sincere gratitude for all of their efforts," the family said.

Jerry, 69, and Barbara Heil, 70, were a devoutly religious couple from White Bear Lake, Minn. They had retired fairly recently and the trip to Italy and cruise were considered to be their trip of a lifetime.

The children have prayed in the San Pietro Apostolo Church on the Italian island of Giglio where the ship struck rocks. Family friends have been praying back home in Minnesota for the missing couple.

I can't imagine how difficult the waiting is for the families. I also can't imagine how difficult this is for the people recovering the bodies. Please, everyone be careful out there. It's a mess.

I went down to read the comments and apparently I had given this one a thumbs down....Don't know how that happened as I hadn't read the comments yet....
Anyway, good luck to the divers and our prayers for the family...

I'm a professional diver. In water so murky, with only one foot visibility, you might as well be diving in complete darkness, since any attempt to utilize a light will NOT penetrate the silted / debris filled water. The light would instead be reflected back, much like the headlights of a car in dense fog. Diving low visibility is not fun. It is especially dangerous diving inside the hull of a ship in these kinds of conditions, since you would likely need lines to find your way in and out, and there is no direct access to the surface if you have an issue. Additionally, these guys are diving what was once a HUGE living space, full of all kinds of stuff to get caught-up on. You ever been on a cruise ship? They are massive! The divers might as well be cave diving in severely low visibility water.

the area that this ship sank in is a marine preserve-and one of the many activities that goes on in it is -diving--ALL- the pics I have seen of this wreck site show the water to be "gin clear"so unless the italians on this ship were the most horrid at house cleaning that has ever been -the water -in the ship is also clear as well -of course things like furniture and paper tend to get in the way -but -the water should not be very murky -at all !

Charles . . . You said it. *the area that this ship sank in is a marine preserve.*
So, quit all that dangerous diving for remains and start removing all the fuel stored on the ship. SAVE the Marine Preserve. SAVE the environment. NOW.

They are now simultaneously working on salvage on body recovery so it's not one or the other, and while the water around the wreck may be clear, everything got churned up inside of it so I can understand the low visibility plus all of the activity in and around the ship is keeping the silt up, you'd be surprised how underwater just a little movement can stir things up

There isn’t enough euro in Italy to pay me to do what those divers are doing.

I pray for these families. I would think that Captain Chicken Chit could go down there and help them now that he's over his injuries from falling into that lifeboat but he's surely having difficulties with his house arrest. POS!

To the commenters making snarky comments about flashlights, you don't have a clue what it's like to search underwater in zero visibility. I'm a rescue/recovery diver and I dive in similar conditions all the time.
In the conditions inside that ship, lights won't help and may in fact cause problems from disorientation. In some areas the water may have enough clarity for lights but in most, it won't. Searching by feel is very tedious and nerve wracking but it has to be done a certain way to keep the divers from becoming casualties.
They're working hard to reunite the victims with their loved ones but their lives are more important. Those divers are doing something you don't have the guts to do so show some respect.

When I made my comment I didn't take into account murkiness in the water.
      • Isis 4 mths ago
Interesting insight. What causes the lack of clarity? I think we have probably see too many movies that show underwater rescues to understand how this plays out in real life.

Diving in rivers etc is the same thing, try diving in the Amazon, or even the Ohio river...the visiblity even with high powered lights, is zero or next to zero.

Pretty heroic of these searchers. I hope they stay safe.

The article failed to mention that lights are useless, due to the amount of debris in the water.
There was oil, food, dirt and other debris throughout the ship, and all of this is floating around with nowhere to go. Even if they use lights, they would just be reflected back into their eyes, being unable to see anything at all.
With all of the comments, these people assume that the water down there is crystal clear.

One big storm and that ship will break in half and go out to sea. It is time to think about avoiding an environmental disaster with a huge fuel spill and get that ship patched and moved away from that rock pile to a dry dock. Better to find those bodies later than to have the whole ship sink into the abyss.

I am a dive instructor and I have done commercial salvage work. Every cabin had carpet (with lots of dirt in it), sheetrock that is coming apart, and I am sure other debris. The visibility would be horrendous. We have powerful lights but it reflects off the particles in the water making your view a wall of white.

Don't the diver's use bright underwater lights - like the mini-subs that dive on the Titanic? Just asking.

Make the Captain go down and look for the missing.....it'll be a reality check for him.
    • David1  •  4 mths ago
They are trying to find needles in a miniature city in a black out. Sooner or later someone has to say enough! Start phase two and drain it, get the fuel off of it to prevent a natural disaster and pull it out of there. You can only do so much. RIP.

Idiots. Do any of you actually think these professional divers are going 60 feet underwater and not taking waterproof flashlights? the point is the water is so murky that even a light will not penetrate it. Try turning on your "brights" the next time you drive in dense fog. It doesn't help, does it.
