Italian Cruise Ship Sinking: Search Suspended as Captain Questioned

Concerned that the ship might suddenly sink, Italian authorities suspended rescue efforts at the wreckage of the Costa Concordia cruise ship that capsized this weekend off the coast of Tuscany.

The ship is resting on a 120-foot "ledge," and could slip down to a depth of about 224 feet if it becomes unstable or moves because of wind or sea shifts. There is also concern about the potential of fuel leaking from the vessel.

At a news conference today, Costa Cruises Chief Executive Officer Pier Luigi Foschi said the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, made an unapproved, unauthorized maneuver to change the ship's programmed course. Italian media has reported that Schettino was close to the shore in order to wave to a friend who was on land.

"The company will be close to the captain and will provide him with all the necessary assistance, but we need to acknowledge the facts and we cannot deny human error," Foschi told a news conference in Genoa.

Schettino is suspected of manslaughter and abandoning ship.

A sixth body was found in the wreckage early this morning when rescue workers searched the part of the ship that is above water.

The body has yet to be identified, although it has been confirmed by Italian news outlet Ansa that the man was a passenger on the ship. The man was found on the second deck in a part of the ship that was not flooded by water. He had his life vest on.

Sixteen people are still unaccounted for after the Costa Concordia, which was carrying 4,234 passengers and crew, hit rocks Friday evening near Giglio, a small island off the coast of Tuscany. Investigators say the ship was an "incredibly close" 450 feet or so from the shore.

The bodies of two passengers found wearing life jackets aboard the ship were identified Sunday, officials said. Both passengers were elderly men -- one Italian, the other Spanish. The bodies were found earlier Sunday near a gathering point in the submerged part of the luxury liner.

"While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary indications are that there may have been significant human error on the part of the ship's master, Captain Francesco Schettino, which resulted in these grave consequences," Costa Cruises said in a statement. "The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore, and in handling the emergency the captain appears not to have followed standard Costa procedures."

Experts are still analyzing the ship's black box, which has already revealed a one-hour lag between the time of the impact on the rocks at 9:45 p.m. local time Friday and the ship's alarm call to the coast guard at about 10:43 p.m. Investigators suspect Schettino tried to maneuver the ship before alerting coast guard, the Italian news outlet Ansa reported.

Schettino is in custody, facing possible charges of manslaughter and abandoning his ship. Schettino reportedly left the stricken vessel at approximately 12:30 a.m., while many passengers didn't get safely off the ship until 6 a.m., Ansa reported.

Ten passengers and six crew members are still unaccounted for. The number was reduced from an earlier estimate of 40 unaccounted for.

The U.S. embassy in Rome estimates 120 Americans were on board the ship, of which 118 have been accounted for.

"Our immediate priority is to account for all passengers and crew, and to secure the vessel to ensure that there are no environmental impacts," Costa Cruises said in a statement. "We have engaged the services of a top specialized salvage company to develop an action plan and help establish a protection perimeter around the ship."

The incident began with a loud bang followed by a blackout just as passengers were having dinner. Minutes later, an announcement from the crew said it was merely an electrical problem. But with the ship tilting, many passengers ignored their orders and scrambled to the deck.

Vacationers reported the crew did not want to lower the lifeboats. Many reported forcing their way on against orders. Some were lowered, but not everyone got on.

By 11 p.m., the ship was tilting too much to its side and many lifeboats couldn't be lowered. Many of the ship's occupants jumped in to the icy waters to make a swim for it, and at least 50 people had to be airlifted by helicopter.

Cruise Ship Sinks Amid Screams, Darkness and Frantic Pushing

Mark and Sarah Plath of Little Rock, Ark., awoke to an announcement just before 11 p.m. saying there was a power outage but not to worry about it. Using their iPhone's level app, the couple soon discovered the ship was tilting 23 degrees. When they went outside, they found about 500 people on the fourth floor deck.

"We were trying to get outside," Mark Plath told ABC News. "People had children with them, people were pushing, people were yelling, people were pushing back. It was difficult to stay in control because so many people were upset."

"We were moving really fast and so Mark said, 'We've got to jump,'" Sarah Plath said. The couple jumped and swam to nearby rocks.

Lynn Kaelin of Seattle told ABC News the ship's hallways were so crowded "We couldn't see where we were going. People were crying and screaming. No one was telling us what to do, at all."

Karen Kois, also of Seattle, said she knew to get warm clothing, although others were barefoot and lightly dressed.

"I had a sweater on under a raincoat. I gave it to a baby who had nothing," she said.

As for the pushing and shoving, Kois said, the crew "told us go one way, then the other. We didn't know what to do. They were just standing looking at us."

When they succeeded in reaching a life boat, it took 45 minutes to launch it, with the ropes tangled and the little crafts tilted.

"And it's pitched black," Kois added.

Above them was the clatter of helicopters trying to pluck people from the decks.

"Have you seen 'Titanic?' That's exactly what it was," said Valerie Ananias, 31, a schoolteacher from Los Angeles. She and sister and parents all had dark red bruises on their knees from crawling along nearly vertical hallways and stairwells to reach rescue boats.

"We were crawling up a hallway, in the dark, with only the light from the life vest strobe flashing," her mother, Georgia Ananias, 61 said. "We could hear plates and dishes crashing, people slamming against walls."

She said an Argentine couple handed her their 3-year-old daughter, unable to keep their balance as the ship lurched to the side and the family found themselves standing on a wall.

"He said 'take my baby,'" Georgia Ananias said, covering her mouth with her hand as she teared up. "I grabbed the baby. But then I was being pushed down. I didn't want the baby to fall down the stairs. I gave the baby back. I couldn't hold her."

    Cruise Ship Crew Is Criticized

Giuseppe Romano, a 57-year-old Carabinieri on the cruise, said, "We lived apocalyptic scenes. There was a strident sound followed by a bang and plates and glasses started flying in the restaurant."

"After the first bang, the crew members said there was a fault and that we should stay calm... Then we heard another bang and I think that the ship hit the rocks again. Then the lights went out," Romano said.

"An officer on the ship asked me to help the people. Immediately afterwards I with other men started taking people off the ship. During this whole apocalyptic scene we saw few crew members," he said.

Mike van Dijk, a 54-year-old from Pretoria, South Africa, said crew members delayed lowering the lifeboats even though the ship was listing badly.

"We had to scream at the controllers to release the boats from the side," van Dijk said. "We were standing in the corridors and they weren't allowing us to get onto the boats. It was a scramble, an absolute scramble."

The ship's owner was as mystified by the crash as the passengers.

"At the time of the collision with the rock the captain of the Costa Concordia was on the command bridge," said the Director General of Costa Crociera Gianni Onorato speaking to journalists at the port of Porto Santo Stefano.

Onorato said the liner was on its regular, weekly route when it struck a reef.

"The ship was doing what it does 52 times a year, going along the route between Civitavecchia and Savona," Onorato said.

ABC News' Michael S. James, Mark Mooney and Katie Moisse, and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

He went toward shore to wave to his friend? What?? He got himself off the ship. How did he do that? The crew was telling people not to lower the lifeboats? How sad. No leadership at all. If he was off the ship, who was there to lead and give orders. He needs to tried and put away for this.

I don't get this. It's not as though the boat was out in the open sea. It was almost on the coast line. What kind of lamebrains are we dealing with here?
      • Freddie 4 mths ago
Italian lamebrains. They're never been known for their bravery - just ask the soldiers in WWII. :-)
      • Rhiannon 4 mths ago
First of all, people died. Don't call these people names. It is very disrespectful. The ship hit the rock much farther out than where it is now. He tried to steer into the port of Giglio and didn't make it. The list was to severe. You have probably never been on a ship. Many passengers are very elderly, many in wheel chairs and many with infants and small children. The didn't warm then in time to go down three of four floors to their cabins, where their life jackets. were. The elevators wouldn't work because of no electricity, so the elderly and infirm had no jackets. The place was in panic, it was pitch black - don't you understand? They couldnt' even see their way down the halls, let alone get to their rooms for the jackets. They were crawling UP the walls becaue it was at a 90 degree list. The water is very cold this time of year and many suffered from hypothermia. On top of that, to jump in, you would have to jump down 3, 4, 5 or 6 storeys straight down into what? They couldn't see what was below them - boats? People" debris? rocks? Meanwhile there is complete panic and chaos. The life boats didn't work and no one had a life jacket. To think that they could merely do a swan dive and swim easily this distance is not even a reasonable thought. Very few did.

This ship was part of the Carnival Cruise line group which is run by the Arison family. I was part of the building team that built three bulk carriers for them and the ships names were prefixed with Nosira (Arison backwards) We asked Ted Arison if he would swap us British officers for the ones on the cruise ships and he said "No, we prefer the Italian officers because they are more romantic with the ladies" What ever happened to having the most qualified officers on your ship??? This was waiting to happen......

100 years ago this year the Titinac went down and yet here we are 100 years later and we get a replay. The only reason this ship didn't sink complety is that it's in shallow water otherwise this disater would have been real ugly ! Now please tell me what has changed in ship building and crew training in the last 100 years ??
      • Samiam71 4 mths ago
The ship building has changed greatly but that gash is at least 100 feet long by 25 feet high and went through both hulls. Look a tthe size of the rock protruding from the hull. What you can't change is human stupidity.
      • LJ 4 mths ago
The Titanic didn't have enough life boats because the owners were too stingy to provide them, and it would have been bad for the 'unsinkable' image. Today's owners are too stingy to provide crew training or to ensure that those they hire are qualified for their positions. There is no possible way to design a ship that could survive that sort of damage. Does this answer your questions?
      • James 4 mths ago
In other words, the only reason this ship didn't sink completely is because the water is so shallow that only an absolute fool would ever consider taking a ship into those waters in the first place.

Say what you want about the Titanic disaster--at least they hadn't gone into waters where they could reasonably expect to run aground. Ice bergs may, or may not be present in an area--but shallow water and all its pitfalls are a certainty once you get close enough to the shore.

Not to mention that Titanic's captain was under pressure to make the voyage faster precisely because it was the maiden voyage and the order was on to make good time, from the head of the company--who was actually on the ship, and therefore, undoubtedly, was personally pressuring the captain. Whereas this fool of a captain in Italy was under no such pressure, and made a mistake due to his own desire to showboat and gamble the lives of everyone on board, for no particular reason.

6 Crew members missing, those were most likely the guys in the engine room and most likely died quickly. Seeing the hole they would have had no chance to get out. Sadly any other people on lower decks may have been caught in a dark lost hell and are again sadly lost. If the Captain wasn't drunk and decided to a take the boat close to shore to wave then he is a man that needs to pay with his life. I have a small boat and I wouldn't get close to shore with a known reef. I'll explain this though below.Yes the company says it's crew and Captain followed their guidelines for a sinking situation. It all boils down the the Captain knew he messed up, instead of manning up and taking control of the situation he tried to cover his initial actions. He tried to move the ship further out to hide what happened, he then stated they had a power failure that caused him to lose course control?????? #$%$ they have many backups and if you're in the lane you have lots of time to drop an anchor and stop your drift. They also practice lose of power situations and they do them in close quarters too as in you lode power while in a small harbor while docking. He didn't want to drop life boats right away because they would show when and where the collision truly happened. By the time he got his grip on the reality of the situation it was too late. Showing his true colors he didn't make sure his ship was empty, he got off and saved his tail. Coward and #$%$ that deserves to go down with his ship. Actually no, why put a coward in a grave next to innocent victims. After seeing a picture of this pot bellied big with his shirt undone and looking like a pimp it's no wonder this happened. I have seen many Captains in my years and they look like true professionals and this guy looks like a pimp at best. Well now a killer pimp.

Thanks Sam - no need for an official inquiry, you obviously already have it all worked out by reading the media reports. #$%$

Gee... After 6 souls lost (so far), 14 missing, a half-billion dollar ship destroyed and arrest for manslaughter and abandoning ship, I'm not quite sure I'd be dressed in my Sunday Best and looking all that presentable.

I'd probably be in jail garb, unshowered (what are Italian jails like in the hygeine dept.?), and, if a man, probably unshaven without even a comb to run through my hair.

If before the arrest, and at home, I'd likely be in sweats crying my eyes out.

Judging appearance is NOT appropriate here.

titanic anyone - i wonder how many (particularly americans) passengers are going to wake up to the fact that they have very little legal recourse on a cruise ship - italian law takes over in this case since it was near italian shore - the crew (not just captain) was totally incompetent - just another good reason not to take cruises - folks from good old USA do not understand that just because a ship leaves port of miami that once it hits international waters the law where the ship is registered takes over - in most cases this is liberia - never understood what the attraction is to get bottled up on a ship - much rather go to vegas if entertainment is the motive
    • Conco  •  4 mths ago
Give the captain a fair trial. Then hang him.
    • Truth From High  •  4 mths ago
All Cruise ship owners need to take a mandatory training every year to understand and SIGN OFF on protocol. They in turn need to ensure all their captains and staff take training incorporating these protocols -- much like the CEO & CFO in any public trading company has to sign off on their financials.
    • Donald  •  4 mths ago
The ,wrekage proposes an engineering nightmare . First they must get the fuel out which will make the vessel lighter and thus more vulnerable to wave forces. If the ship is on a steep drop-off, as reported, any operation will then become very dangerous. She might have to be scrapped where she lies if the rise and fall of the tides in the are are not significant.
    • MKE J  •  4 mths ago
I don't see why they don't just put the captain back on the ship right now. Seems appropriate.

I guess this commpany's SOP is for the Captain to save his butt and get off the ship 6 hours before his passangers. The cruise company clearly stated that the Captain followed the companies "SOP", REALLY? Not lowering life boats, keeping people on board while the boat lits and doing so until a point that they could not be launched? The boat was very close to shore, for safety they should have launched them all asap and worry less about getting in trouble with the law. This captain was doing all he could to save his tail and the company is backig a coward, multi murderer and drunk. I hope the law suits put this company out of business and the Captain spends the rest of his cowardly life behind bars. The Italians crucified Knox for one death, lets see if they do the same for a man that fas killed 21 people!

Check out those passenger cabins. There are still people on board. Suspending the search? Why? You can see this is not the USA.
