    Italian ship fires on Indian fishing boat, 2 dead

    NEW DELHI (AP) — An Italian cargo ship fired at an Indian fishing boat that it mistook for a pirate vessel, killing two fishermen, India's navy said Thursday.

    The ship identified as the Enrica Lexie fired at the fishermen in waters off India's southern Kerala state on Wednesday, a navy statement said.

    The Indian coast guard and navy vessels escorted the Italian ship to the nearby port city of Kochi and were questioning the captain and crew.

    The owner of the fishing vessel, who goes by the single name Freddy, said Thursday the firing was unprovoked. The boat was fishing when the ship opened fire, killing the two fishermen instantly, he said.

    Nine other fishermen onboard the craft survived.

    Piracy has emerged as a major threat to merchant ships traversing the sea lanes of the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. Pirates based in Somalia have been hijacking ships and holding the vessels and their crew for ransom.

    Several countries, including India, allow ship owners to deploy armed security guards on ships. Ship owners say the move has proved effective and prevented hijackings.

      This story has to be incomplete. Why would you just open fire on a fishing boat that isn't even following you? That makes no sense.

      Indian ocean, Coastal areas of Kerala are so far away from Arabian sea or areas preyed by Somalian Pirates. Its like attacking fishing boat in Caribbean sea or near Miami by presuming it to be of Somalian pirates. What is Italian Ship Captains drinking these days? They should be run off Sea. They are not fit to be in Sea waters. India should sue that cargo company so it can never sail the sea ever again.

      Indian prisons are no place for any human let alone a foreigner.The guards have blood sport games all the times. I have visited Tihar and other prisons in India doing outreach and have seen and heard things that would make Adolf faint. These Italians wont last very long. a night or 2 at most before other inmates get to the best of them. SAD

        and go to check the history of italy (italy unification history)
        Again don't ever say again I am italian because you are not, you born in usa and lived in usa, you are an american.
        You don't know nothing about italy, take a trip in milan or south tyrol and say " i am italian" people will laugh at you

      if i were the captain of a cargo ship sailing in known pirate waters, id shoot first too if they were making provocative moves. but we dont know that. we assume the indians had the white flag or were not being hostile. not being there no one really knows yet. but we assume that the italians were at fault what else is new?

But good thing for the Europeans the Americans didn't loose in WW1 and WW2 huh?.......and from what we are seeing here in Europe again with the rise of right wing extremism only made worse by this disaster called the Euro.....they may well have to rescue the Europeans from themselves yet once again.

      We need Q-ships. They are vessels that look like harmless ships, but they are heavily armed and manned by well trained military crews. Gives the pirates a very nasty surprise.

      Italians can sail boats, recognize a danger from an encounter with poor fishermen, can't steer an ocean liner and don't seem to ahve a justice system that works effectively, or a political system that works... The only things they have that work is the various mafia (the secualr one and the Vatican one). It must really be embarrassing to be Italian...and with good reason.

      RIP to the innocent fishermen and their poor wives and children who lost the breadwinners of their families. As for the guilty Italian seamen they should be ready to spend what will seem like an eternity in Indian prisons - a punishment worse than death.

      The Italian ship did not send any distress signal nor it reported the insident until they were intercepted by Indian coast guards 2 -3 hours later. I think they thought that they almost got away with it. Now sadistic entertainment will get its fair price in Indian jails. Pray for those poor toddlers who lost their sole bread winner.

      Now see what the pirates have done, they have created itchy fingers and trigger happy sailors and I am sure that from now on they will kidnap some fishermen, paint them black, if they are not already black and set them lose on the high seas to see where are those trigger happy boats are that are hounding them. Remember, we are dealing with an extremely ruthless lot of pirates here who will not hesitate to cut your throat, drink your blood and throw the rest of you over board for the sharks to finish off.
