Jamaican police search for pair of jail escapees

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Two inmates have escaped from a jail in Jamaica's capital that holds some of the Caribbean country's most hardened criminals.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force says the pair broke out of the Horizon Adult Remand Center on Sunday morning by climbing through a vent and then making their way over a wall.

One of the prisoners is serving a life sentence for the 2004 murder of a retired police superintendent. The other is an 18-year-old inmate awaiting trial on murder charges in another case.

The Horizon jail is near some of Kingston's roughest neighborhoods. The U.S. State Department has said the jail holds convicted criminals along with people awaiting trial or charges.
