James Holmes Halloween Mask on eBay (ABC News)

ABC's Carol McKinley and Clayton Sandell report:

As if the Aurora Colorado movie theater massacre wasn't horrible enough, someone was trying to sell a custom rubber Halloween mask of accused mass murderer James Holmes on eBay.

A seller identified as " realface13" posted the ad on eBay. Messages sent to realface13 were not immediately returned to ABC News.

By midday Friday, it appeared the posting had been deleted. It's not clear if it was taken down by the seller or eBay, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Police say James Holmes, 24, armed himself with handguns, a rifle and shotgun before opening fire at a July 20 midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Twelve people were killed, including a 6-year-old girl, and 58 others were wounded.

"SHOCK EVERYONE YOU KNOW!" the eBay ad read. "There is nothing more scary than crawling into James Holmes mind and wearing his face. His 'soul penetrating eyes' and 'The Joker' orange hair makes this mask the most disturbing object you will ever own. Imagine owning the mask of supposedly the most dangerous mass murderer in US history."

The posting said the seller won the mask in a high- stakes poker tournament in Europe. The seller said the mask was custom-designed for a private collector, and also made reference to an unidentified documentary it says will be released in 2013.

Josh Nolan, a single father of two who was shot in the leg and in the arm at the theater, says the mask is over the line.

"Are you kidding me?" the Iraq war veteran told ABC News. "That just took the cake right there. I'm too upset to think about it."

"I'll get past this. It's okay. I just need to focus on getting healed and taking care of my children," said Nolan, who was on his way to physical therapy when he heard about the mask.

The starting bid for the Holmes mask was $500, although there were no bids for the item before it was deleted.
