Janet Jackson Reflects On Whitney Houston's Death, Offers Advice For Bobbi Kristina

Janet Jackson says she was left "shaking" by the news of Whitney Houston's death.

"I couldn't believe it. Immediately I started shaking," Janet told Anderson Cooper in an appearance set to air on "Anderson" on February 20. "I was trying to text everyone that I knew to let them know and I was speechless. I could not believe it."

The singer, who lost her own brother, Michael Jackson in 2009, said she learned about Whitney's death while watching television.

"I was home... I just so happened to be watching TV and I saw this newsflash and I still can't believe it when I hear them playing tribute to her on the radio," Janet said. "It's still such a shock to me. I don't want to believe it."

When asked if she had advice for Whitney's daughter, 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina, as she deals with the tremendous loss of her mother, Janet suggested turning to faith - and - to professional help.

"It's a very, very tough time, even though it's still a loss, I lost my brother, she lost her mother. There's still a difference, even though there's still a loss to a family," Janet said. "I don't know what that's like being so young. It was hard for me. It was very, very difficult for me. I didn't want to accept it, it's very difficult. You have to come to terms at some point, you have to actually give it up to God and it sounds so mean, but you have to move on, you can't hold onto that because it can be very devastating. Sometimes therapy is the best thing."

Janet told Anderson she is praying for Whitney's family, including the superstar's ex-husband, Bobby Brown.

"It's very, very devastating and I pray for her and her family, even Bobby. I mean he's going through so much. They are all going through so much. The mother, it's very sad," Janet said.

Reflecting on Whitney's career, Janet used a term so often used to describe Whitney over the years -- "the voice."

"She was known as the voice. When she would open her mouth and this instrument would come out you would obviously understand why," Janet said. "She was such a sweet, sweet soul -- especially back in early '80s and early '90s is when I connected with Whitney the most. It doesn't matter if we were doing an awards show. We would always take the time out to find one another. Either she'd come to my dressing room to say, 'Hey!' and I'd be in makeup or I'd find her in her dressing room to say 'Hey!' We always found time to talk to one another. She was such a sweet soul."

Janet is such a classy lady, bless you and I can only hope that you can physically reach out to Bobbi Kristina.. she may need help from someone not so close to the family.

I am still in shock, I just cannot believe it. My best friend called and told me of Whitney passing. I turned the TV on to see if it were true, and when i saw the words came across the screen my eyes gathered full of tears. I could not stop the tears from falling. I loved Whitney she was my favorite intertainer. May she rest in peace in heaven with God. I will see her again when we meet at the beautiful golden gates.

I have read some cruel comment on this blog. Let's start off by saying i'm a 51 year old female who has lost her mother, father, sister, and grandmother within the last 10 years. Who the hell are you all to say ' GET OVER IT, A LOSE IS A LOSE" Until you have went down the same road loosing your love one you will NEVER know that horrible feeling. People really need to get a grip on life for real.

I don't think Janet meant it the way you are implying. She knows that there is really no time frame for mourning a loss. Remember it's been three years for Janet since she lost her brother. Perhaps she has found a way to channel her grief, and unlike Bobbi Kristina, Janet is much older. The pain is still fresh for Bobbi Kristina. I'm sure Janet just wants her to find positive ways to deal with her pain. Like you, I have lost my father, brother, niece, grandfather and several cousins, aunts and uncles since 2003. With God's help, I take one day at a time.

It's very sad to lose a parent. Just not sure why it is sadder for Whitney's daughter than the rest of us?

I'm reading the posts on here saying prescription drugs took her life. NOBODY knows if that is in fact the case. Maybe it was, but that hasn't been confirmed, so we shouldn't say it. What we do know is she did take some pills while in the bathtub. Now common sense says one of two things probably happened: 1. She overdosed and died before going underneath the water. or 2. She fell alseep and THEN went under the water and died from drowning. There are more cases than people would probably imagine of people dying from falling asleep in the bathtub. It's a lot more common than people think. That's why they say NEVER drink alcohol before taking a long bath and NEVER take any type of drowsy medicaiton before taking a long bath. And certainly NEVER mix the two before a long bath. We shouldn't be so quick to assume the worst of her. It could have been an innocent accident. Let's wait until we hear the facts from the coroner. Love You Whitney!!!

True, but it's not just the general public who are speculating. All the talk shows, etc. are on a feeding frenzy, tossing out all sorts of opinions on her death. They are the ones prompting the speculation.
      • hinkler 3 mths ago
Yes, her cause of death hasn't been confirmed, but given her history with drugs and alcohol, you'd have to be pretty naive not to think they killed her.

The shame of it all is that Whitney is not the first nor will be the last celebrity to pass away from the vices of drugs and alcohol. If those around these celebrities would stop making it so easy for them to get these killers maybe they wouldn't be dropping like flies. Celebrities need to be told NO but the people around them who are making money off them refuse to do it! We lost such a beautiful person in Whitney.

WTF cares what Janet or Celine or anyone else thinks! They are like vultures using the death of Whitney Houston to get attention for themselves.

As for her advice...her mother is still alive and leeching off the estate - so she can't give advice to anyone. Her brother committed suicide.

You know what's so ironic. Janet was about to achieve Superstar Status with "Control" and Bobbi Kristina lost her mother at a time when a Young Lady really needs her Mother. Janet was right on about getting professional help. You don't get over something like that right away and knowing that for the next couple of months your mother is going to be featured in every Magazine Tabloid and otherwise isn't going to be easy either. If Bobby really loves his daugther get her help or maybe have her talk to children of Rock Icons (The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, The Mamas & The Papas) amongst other s and ask how they dealt with their Father's Death.

That's very sweet of Janet to offer some kind words about Whitney. She knows how hard it is to lose of loved one. Michael has been dead for almost 3 years, but I can imagine that it still hurts. I hope everyone can come together and heal during this tragic time.
