Japan population to shrink by one-third by 2060

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's population of 128 million will shrink by one-third and seniors will account for 40 percent of people by 2060, placing a greater burden on a smaller working-age population to support the social security and tax systems.

The grim estimate of how rapid aging will shrink Japan's population was released Monday by the Health and Welfare Ministry.

In year 2060, Japan will have 87 million people. The number of people 65 or older will nearly double to 40 percent, while the national work force of people between ages 15 and 65 will shrink to about half of the total population, according to the estimate, made by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research.

The total fertility rate, or the expected number of children born per woman during lifetime, in 2060 is estimated at 1.35, down from 1.39 in 2010 — well below more than 2 needed to keep the country's population from declining. But the average Japanese will continue to live longer. The average life expectancy for 2060 is projected at 90.93 for women, up from 86.39 in 2010, and 84.19 years for men, up from 79.64 years.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has pledged to push for social security and tax reforms this year. A bill he promised to submit by the end of March would raise the 5 percent sales tax in two stages to 8 percent in 2014 and 10 percent by 2015, although opposition lawmakers and the public pose challenges to its approval.

The institute says Japan has been the world's fastest aging country, and with its birthrate among the lowest, its population decline would be among the deepest globally in coming decades.

Experts say that Japan's population will keep losing 1 million every year in coming decades and the country urgently needs to overhaul its social security and tax system to reflect the demographic shift.

"Pension programs, employment and labor policy and social security system in this country is not designed to reflect such rapidly progressing population decline or aging," Noriko Tsuya, a demography expert at Keio University, said on public broadcaster NHK. "The government needs to urgently revise the system and implement new measures based on the estimate."

May I ask a question? Aside from the population crisis, why is everyone making a big deal out of this? So Japanese men aren't sex-crazed animals and the women aren't hyper sluts. I see no reason to criticize the people simply because they are not guilty (or so it seems) of wild promiscuity. If this is true, I say good for them. That just makes them the better of us.

As for the population issue... teenagers asi
de I am more worried about the adults. It is good that the younger people aren't engaging in wild sexual activity but... this seems to imply that married adult couples are also refusing to have sex and/or children. To me, that is far more worrisome than a few abstinent teenagers...

The US would simply fight about the problem in D.C. until the consequences overtook us. The Japanese will work together to fix it; as they always do.

sounds like the men and women of breeding age need to start "working together" a little bit more if you get my drift!!!!

Not really, Mexico's birthrate has dropped from 9 kids per woman to only 2.32 and dropping every year thanks to free birth control. I have a ton of female friends that have successful university degree jobs, have a SO but no kids and are in no rush in having any. Even rural women are waiting longer to have their own kids and few mexican women these days want more than 3. I know a handful of women that got their tubes tied for free after having 2 kids, other only have 1 kid and are happy as hell with just 1.

I'm curious as to where all these off the wall posts come from? I know there is that segment of "angry white men" who rant about liberals, but I'm beginning to think the unemployment rate is so high because so many of these posters are too mentally ill to hold a job. The way they spout off, who would want them in the work place? Obviously, they would not be team workers and who would let them get near a customer?

We hear so much about the population explosion and how bad that is, and now we hear about population decline and how bad that is. At what point did our global population figure become "perfect" so we know when to be stable? We don't, of course. It's in human nature to think that no matter what is happening, it must be bad.

The problem starts with the fact that 40% of Japanese women never get married. Kids out of wedlock is quite rare there. The one's who marry have the same number kids as American women...

USA needs to be leaner. it would do well to drop to 200 million. less mouths to feed, less gasoline TO IMPORT. less burden to support. a lower population would help the world. less energy to heat people. less overall food demand. china could drop half a billion and india, too. all of africa needs to pare half a billion and quit killing the land and helping the sahara expand.
