Japan, Russia 'far apart' on territorial dispute

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said Saturday that a heated, decades-long territorial dispute with Russia was far from solved even as they agreed to boost security and economic cooperation.

Gemba, standing next to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, told a news briefing in Tokyo that the two sides "remain far apart" on claims to the Kuril islands off the coast of northern Japan's Hokkaido island.

"I said (to Lavrov) that it is now more necessary than ever that the two countries solve the territorial issue and sign a peace treaty so as to build a true friendly relationship," Gemba said.

The two nations have never formally signed a peace treaty as Japan maintains its claim over the islands, which Russia has controlled since Japan's surrender at the end of World War II.

Tokyo still claims the chain's four southernmost islands, a sore spot that continues to cast a cloud over Russian-Japanese relations.

President Dmitry Medvedev outraged Japan in November 2010 when he became the first Russian leader to visit the resource-rich islands.

Gemba said the territorial issue must be solved before Japan, the world's third-largest economy, invests further in the islands and Russia's underdeveloped Far East region.

"We would consider joint business activities if it helps solve the sovereignty issue," Gemba said.

"But we must not violate Japan's legal stance...In that sense, the positions (between Japan and Russia) remain far apart."

Lavrov said Russia wants "a solution acceptable to both countries."

"We would like to do so in calm atmosphere, without getting emotional," he added.

Also Saturday, the pair agreed to boost cooperation on security, defence and economic issues while simplifying visa requirements for Japanese business and non-tourist visitors to Russia.

The US made a deal with the Russians towards the end of WWII. They told the Russians to enter the war with Japan and they could get back their lost territory of Sakhalin and the Kurils.

The US was losing 8000 men a month in the war in the Pacific. Each battle with the Japanese was bloody. The Japanese still had 1.5 million soldiers in Manchuria, China and Korea. They were slowly deploying those troops to the war in the Pacific. The US may have been winning, but the cost was going to be high.

The Russians had ten million men under arms. Stalin had to secretly deploy a million soldiers from Europe to Asia. After losing 26 million civilians and soldiers to the Nazis, the Russian people would have launched an all out revolt if they knew they were going to war again in Asia. Against the Japanese who attacked the Americans?!!

The Battle of Manchuria was the largest battle of WWII, and the last major battle of the war. Though the Japanese were tough, the Russians were battle-hardened, and swept over them like a nitro fueled steam roller.

The Russians took Northern Korea (liberating Korea from 45 years of Japanese colonial occupation) Sakhalin and the Kurils.

The last atomic bomb was dropped on Japan on August 9, 1945. By August 13, still no surrender! President Truman was livid. He ordered round-the-clock bombing of Japanese cities.
The night of August 14, 1945. Japanese officials, military leaders and the Emperor meet in their bunkers. They are still arguing about whether to surrender. The American bombs are falling outside!
The Emperor reads messages from Manchuria, his 1.5 million soldiers are either dead or captured at the hands of the Russians. Soviet forces are have taken the last Kuril island, and are massing an invasion force to take the main northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. He has made his decision. On August 15, 1945 he announces on nationwide radio that Japan will surrender, unconditionally to the Allied powers of the United States, Britain, China and the Soviet Union. The war is over...
But the anger in Russia had just started. This wasn't their war, and they lost 13,000 of their sons to help the Americans and British win it.

Today, Russia is a democracy, and the polls are consistent. The Russian voters are insulted and angry....still. The paid for Kurils in blood. How much does 13,000 dead Russian sons get you. Four small little islands?!! They aren't giving them back. If the Japanese have a problem with that, they can bring it up with the Americans, who gave them the Kuril islands in return for the blood of their sons.

When Japan signed the surrender document on the USS Missouri, the document stated that they renounced any right or claim to Sakhalin island and the Kurils

Russia should return these islands to Japan to whom it signed a non-aggression treaty with prior to WW-2. If they do not do so, they are no better than the Nazis who attacked the Soviets despite a similar treaty.

Speaking of stolen land, how about giving East Prussia back to Germany instead.

Japan kicked the crap out of Russia in 1905. When the U.S. beat Japan in WW2 Russia snuck in to take the islands...

Whatever that may be, the US is starting WW3. Not Iran, Russia, or China.

Russia is so much the same as China. I hope those two start knocking heads soon.. Usually opposites attract but two with the same mind set is destine to have a flare up.. I am waiting to see this happen.. I think over time Russia will be feeling the threat from a powerful China and with both with an onsite of power, one will not want to feel intimidated by the other.

The Red Army vaporized 1 million Japanese soldiers in manchria in 1945 It was no contest even though the japanese refused to surrender. More than all the US soldiers did in the Pacific also 1 million Itlaiens vaporized who invaded the Motherland with the Germans 1938 imagine if those troops would have been in Sicily awaiting the Americans. In 1904 the Japs never took on the full Russia a small Easten Province

Never trust Russians, they will stab you in the back. Russia is playing a game and trying to steal as much land from Asia as possible. Remeber the Russian/Japanese war? Russians always have ulterior motives.
    • Skeptic  •  25 days ago
I suppose Russia can sell that disputed land to Japan for $20 billion, a much better price than what it sold to the United States (i.e., Alaska). $20 billion is nothing to Japan.
