Jay-Z enters new musical heights at Carnegie Hall

NEW YORK (AP) — As Jay-Z transitioned from hit song to hit song at a Carnegie Hall concert Monday night, so did the lighting, changing from red to white to blue.

The veteran rapper then performed his latest hit, "Glory," about his 1-month-old daughter with Beyoncé, Blue Ivy Carter.

"I didn't think I was going to make it through that one," he said, sounding emotional. "That was tough."

It was one of the many jams Jay-Z performed at New York's famed venue, his latest achievement in music domination.

The rapper is the second hip-hop act to perform at Carnegie Hall. Wyclef Jean did so in 2001 with Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton and Whitney Houston.

Jay-Z was joined by fellow New Yorkers Alicia Keys and Nas. He was backed by an orchestra of 30-plus and a band that included Questlove of The Roots and neo-soul singer Bilal. It was one of two shows for charity planned this week.

The Grammy-winning rapper, born Shawn Carter, started off in a black-and-white tuxedo, bowtie and black sunglasses, commanding the stage with confidence in a somewhat unfamiliar territory: The audience was mostly men in suits or tuxedos, and women in conservative dresses. About 2,800 people filled the hall.

Though some tickets were sold to the public, most were offered in a private sale, going from $500 to $2,500. The proceeds will benefit the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation, which helps low-income students cover college costs. Students from Jay-Z's foundation also attended the show.

Jay-Z, who released his debut album in 1996, performed more than two dozen hits including "Hard Knock Life," ''99 Problems" and "Dirt Off Your Shoulder." Classic New York anthems also entertained the audience. The orchestra played a medley of Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind," Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" and Gil Scott-Heron's "New York Is Killing Me."

Changing into a black tux, Jay-Z performed "Empire State of Mind" with Keys, who wore similar attire. Nas followed with his song "N.Y. State of Mind."

"Make some noise for the Giants," yelled Jay-Z, giving a shout-out to the recent Super Bowl champions.

Jay-Z changed outfits once again, this time to a black T-shirt, black pants and a black cap. He traveled to the second floor and began to rap songs from the top of a chair.

He gave shout-outs to some of those missed in music, from the Notorious B.I.G. to Aaliyah to Don Cornelius. He also gave a shout-out to Liza Minnelli, who waved to the audience before Jay-Z hit the stage.

Used to be that only great singers would get a chance to sing at Carnegie Hall, the Pinnacle of New York concert stage prestige (sorry Garden).

Now they host former drug-dealing thugs who cannot sing a note, yet claim to be "artists". What a shame. All part of America's evidence of decline.

You're such a low-life hater! The world has left you behind!

Seeing the truth doesn't make you a hater. Speedfreak is right. The term artist is to loosely used along with, professional, musican, entertainer......not what it used to.

The dumbing down of America continues at an alarming rate! "Mediocrity" is the new "brilliant."

I just hope he puts out a mini-movie or video so all his fans can appreciate the rare moment with him. Carnegie Hall is a big look even for someone like JayZ. Like how they mentioned Wyclef but I am sure he wasn't the headline.

JayZ has once again given a blueprint for how artist can continue their careers well into their 40s and possibly 50s. But won't be too many artist with the intelligence and savvy to even pull it off. TI if he stays away from prison, Andre 3000 and Big Boi (I definitely see them playing Vegas at the MGM), Snoop Dog, and Dr. Dre might be 50, 60 before he releases his next album. haha

Jay and Bey work together....they are a power couple and that is where some of they're success lies. You know some people are great alone, but when there are two, it can be even greater....this is the case with Jay and Beyonce. I think they both have added to each other's success and fame. I mean, they both had success and a little bit of fame before, but it seems like when Bey's solo album dropped, her fame just skyrocketed and so did Jay's.

I normally don't comment, but considering its Big Homey Jay. I'll throw some one hitters quitters out there. Its all pretty simple. Racism is still a huge part of society and thats often the reason why so many people can't find The Goodness in Rap (which there are many different forms and many different artists each of whom have a view and spin on the world of their own and they express it through lyrics). So not everybody is throwing a bunch of meaningless, egotistical, materialistic, demoralizing words out there. There is a lot of Genius yes I said, Genius in Hip-Hop and Jay-Z does a good job in Representing that, as well as Younger Generation of African Americans and really just The Generation X of Human Beings in general who for the most part are trying to figure out Who They Are and how best make it work in the current society of hypocrites and loud talkers. Its no accidents that he sells millions of records, and has been at the top of Hip Hop's Hierarchy for over a decade its not all popularity but more, we need some lessons, and examples of somebody getting it done against many odds. Not finger pointing and excuse making. So a Big Thankhs to Our Big Homey and a special toast Princess Blue Ivy and The Carter Family. Generation X will get it done. Thankhs for the Phenomenal Scores to Our Movies of Life.

People crack me up.. You're calling this man evil, but yet you wish death upon his daughter, you say things like " I hate him".... So who is really evil??? Its amazing how society is full of gullible, ill-mannered , insecure, hateful people that are quick to judge ones art/talent because they lack the intellectual ability to concern themselves with more important matters! Jealousy is the gateway door to a miserable life, try living your life and focus less on celebrities that can give a #$%$ about you!

This was a charity event people. Give him a break. He raised a LOT of money for people who really need it, and got it from people who don't. Better than raising taxes! There's room for everybody, right? Let's celebrate our right to play & listen to what ever music we want!

People are funny. Jay-Z was a street hustler who took a talent and now is a millionaire. Isn't that what we are suppose to do in America. Clean ourselves up and go out and conquer the American dream. Seems to me that a lot of you are against that for some people. Also for those who say rap is not music, please refer to the fact this was in Carnegie hall. They know more about music than you do. So please you should direct your narrow minded comments to them. They deemed what Jay-Z was doing as art. So they let him play there. Just because you cannot rap as well or even know what you are talking about, it doesn't negate the fact Jay-Z was there.

When I hear that cries against rap, I suggest that some of you listen to his style and try to rap with him. Most of the people I challenge fail horribly. They cannot do the phrasing or the lyrical style. Then they get mad and call it names and walk away. That is what I suggest for all of you that want to decry rap.

Haters Haters Haters go suck a tail pipe. We all should appreciate everything these people have done for our less fortunate. What haveYOU done for your community. That's rite shut up your opinion doesn't count. And don't reply to me cause I won't even read it. I for one am glad we have people like these and need more of them:)

People people people. For those of you that can appreciate Jay then appreciate him. You cannot change the minds of the ignorant few. There are those that will mock, hate, invalidate, and just be outright stupid when it comes to things that they don't relate to. You have to understand these people and their ideals will not go anywhere because they teach their children these same values and the cycle continues. I personally like Jay because he is highly intelligent. Some will say he isnt smart or successful or talented yet he is this and he is that because of his past or he didnt go to college. But at the same time half of these people are the same people that are part of the plaugue of this great nation and I am sure all of them didnt go to college either. I guarantee you that if there was a eric clapton, bon jovi, bono, madonna or anyone else that is along that same genre of music had this very same article written about them playing at Carnegie hall, you will not find that people will comment racially, ignorantly or hatefully just because it’s not something they listen to. I challenge you to go to click on a country article and find a hip hop fan speaking negatively about what the music isn’t. What ever happened to if you don’t like it don’t listen to it. We as American have the freedom of speech but sometimes we don’t know when to shut up. Funny thing is all of you people that have something negative to say, have shown your class and close minded you are when it comes to something that isnt like you. However, I suppose you saw Jay-z and thought it was going to miraculously not be about him. Idiots

So what if people think Jay and Bey aren't the "best"....that doesn't mean they aren't successful. They both are determined, goal orien., focused individuals and I am certain they both will be great parents to they're new bundle of joy. I am happy for the couple...the Bible says that children are gifts from God....a gift that should only be accepted when one is ready emotionally and mentally. Children deserve to grow up in a healthy two parent household where both parents love and respect each other. Jay and Bey are just living they're dream, enjoying they're lives, they aren't hurting anyone....they are just happy to be successful and waking up everyday living they're dream life together. Bey and Jay have come a long ways.
