Is Jennifer Lawrence on Her Way to Another Oscar for 'American Hustle?'

People have finally gotten a look at David O. Russell's American Hustle and buzz is growing louder for Jennifer Lawrence's big-haired performance as the wife of Christian Bale's con man.

The film screened twice on Sunday, once at the Santa Barbara Film Society and once on the Sony lot, where the audience was made up mostly of members of the SAG Awards nominating committee. Though reviews are embargoed, reactions to the film have found their way onto the Internet. Pete Hammond of Deadline wrote that Russell has "has another winner with a film that will have strong appeal particularly in the actors branch and at SAG." Tim Gray at Variety simply stated: "Big thumbs up."

Not all the reactions were that positive. Kristopher Tapley of HitFix found the film "pretty flat for the most part." Still, the prospect of J-Law getting in on the Oscar race yet again, this time in a supporting part, is what's getting the bulk of the attention. "She is simply dazzling as Bale’s  wife, a total knockout scene-stealer throughout," Hammond wrote. "If she hadn’t already won last year as Best Actress for Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, there is no doubt she might be unbeatable here." Even still, Hammond contends she might be a front-runner anyway, which goes along with what Tom O'Neill at Gold Derby noted: "She could easily pull off an Oscars heist next and do what no other star has ever done: win in a supporting race one year after prevailing in lead." Steve Pond at The Wrap added: "If there was any kind of unanimous verdict, it was that Jennifer Lawrence steals the show."

Sony apparently must know this: they've been giving Lawrence plenty of airtime in advertising for the film, including having released clips showcasing her performance. This past Friday one came out featuring Lawrence's character gabbing about her nails:

Of note, Lawrence's and Amy Adam's characters kiss in one scene that Pond reported garnered applause from the SAG audience. The kiss was reportedly Adams idea. "I don’t take credit for a lot of things, but that was my idea," Adams said at the Q&A, according to Pond. "I don’t know why. Maybe I just wanted to kiss Jennifer. She’s just so cute."
