Jennifer Lawrence's Golden Globes Meryl Streep Diss Was A Quote From First Wives Club

Jennifer Lawrence prompted a host of Tweets after stepping on stage to accept her Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for "Silver Linings Playbook," and quipping, "I beat Meryl." But, her comment was not a dig at Streep, who had also been up for the award.

"What does it say, 'I beat Meryl,'" is what Jennifer said when she stepped on stage.

It turns out, the talented young actress was actually quoting 1996's "The First Wives Club."

In the film, Bette Midler's character says to Goldie Hawn's character, "Once you were a terrific actress. You even got an Oscar to prove it." Bette's character sees and touches the golden statue in the scene, saying, "'I beat Meryl.' That's what it says."

But not everyone appears to be as versed in "First Wives" quotes as the 22-year-old Golden Globe winner, and they missed out on the joke.

"Dancing with the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba Tweeted, "WOAH...OOPS, Jennifer Lawrence - Whoops.. "I BEAT MERYL"???!!! Who says that?"

Jim O'Heir from "Parks and Recreation" (he plays Jerry Gergich) Tweeted, "Jennifer Lawrence wins it. So well deserved! OUCH She said...I beat Meryl. Don't mess with legends! Lol."

His co-star, Retta, who plays Donna, Tweeted, "Just heard Jennifer Lawrence win something. She beat Meryl?" and linked to a photo of herself looking surprised.

Another comment Jennifer made on stage - "Harvey, thank you for killing whoever you had to kill to get me up here today" - also got some attention.

"Jennifer Lawrence thanking Harvey Weinstein for killing people is a "joke" in the sense they everyone's pretty sure it's 100% factual," Ronan Farrow, Mia Farrow's son, wrote.

She also got plenty of praise for her win and her look.

"Congratulations to my girlfriend Jennifer Lawrence on winning Best Actress at #GoldenGlobes," "30 Rock's" Judah Friedlander Tweeted.

"Girl crush...Jennifer Lawrence," Tamera Mowry-Housley wrote.

"Is @jenniferlawrence the new grace Kelly?" Carson Kressley Tweeted.
