From JFK to Sept. 11, conspiracy theories thrive

DALLAS (AP) — In Dealey Plaza, with the white "X'' painted on the spot where President Kennedy was assassinated, ask anyone about the grassy knoll and the second gunman.

Conspiracy theories come with the territory here. And at Barbec's Restaurant on the other side of this sprawling city, six men sit on a covered porch and convene a meeting of the North Texans for 9/11 Truth group and talk about the government's lies about 9/11.

The group has 50 active members; 200 on the mailing list. And they number among many thousands who, after years of investigations, don't believe the official version of how the World Trade Center collapsed, who was responsible or what the government knew and when.

Politics doesn't have anything to do with it; two were once staunch, Bush-voting conservatives; two are progressives and two weren't even interested in current events until after the 2001 attacks.

"Before 9/11, I was a working class person, going through life, pretty much accepting everything given and told to me," said Bryan Black, a 50-year-old carpenter from Commerce, Texas, "I'm starting to see things. I'm more open to skeptical conversation."

The skeptics — they prefer the term "9/11 truth activists" instead of "truthers" — have persisted, even thrived in the decade since 2001, with proponents from former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel to comedian Rosie O'Donnell. And unlike the years that Kennedy assassination conspiracies took to develop, they have mobilized with lightning-like speed on the Internet, with YouTube videos of the trade center collapsing again and again.

"There's really a foundation of reality here," said Ted Walter, who has worked unsuccessfully to prod New York City officials into reopening an investigation of how 7 World Trade Center collapsed on the afternoon of Sept 11. "We believe that if all of the American public saw footage of building 7 on the nightly news, it would lead to widespread skepticism of 9/11."

For many, conspiracy theories aren't terrifying; they're more comforting than the idea that an event as terrifying as Sept. 11 could be so — random.

Conspiracies can be a "security blanket" for explaining away the horrific, asserts Patrick Leman, a University of London professor who researches 9/11 theories. "It stops us from having to confront the unpredictability of life."

Jonathan Kay, a columnist with the Canadian newspaper The National Post and the author of a book about conspiracy theories, said it's normal for people to seek out complicated and detailed explanations of big events.

"There is something in the human mind that rebels against the idea of random forces or individuals being able to bring down powerful people or powerful icons," said Kay.

There's no real estimate of the numbers of people in the 9/11 "truth" movements — there's no one leader of the skeptics. A group called Remember Building 7 presented New York's City Council with a petition in 2009 signed by 80,000 people calling for an independent probe into the attacks. Other groups include Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth, Scholars for 9/11 Truth and the 9/11 Commission Campaign, founded by Gravel.

The "truthers" generally have about a dozen beliefs surrounding what happened on that day, although there are some variations on who was responsible for the attacks and why:

— Explosives brought down the World Trade Center, not hijacked jetliners.

— There were warnings of the impending attacks from 11 different countries, and fighter jets could have intercepted at least one of the four planes that day.

— Criminal conspiracies within the government caused the attacks.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology conducted a probe that took six years to complete of the tower collapses; the last report found that fire caused the collapse of 7 World Trade Center, a skyscraper north of the twin towers. In the collapses of the twin towers, the agency found that extreme heat from the jetliner crashes caused some steel beams to lose strength, causing further failures in the building until the entire structure succumbed.

The investigation "was the most comprehensive examination of a structural failure ever conducted," said Shyam Sunder, lead investigator of the collapse investigation and led to 40 building code changes to make safer, terror-proof skyscrapers. NIST maintains a website with its reports and computer-based animations that reconstruct its findings to reach out to the public.

Sunder acknowledges it hasn't reached everyone.

"We really can't explain why some people question our findings about the WTC collapses when we have done our best to present those findings and how they were derived as clearly as possible," Sunder wrote in an e-mail.

It begs the question: why is there such a distrust of government when it comes to 9/11? Is it due to feeling alienated from our fractured political system, a bad economy, or something else?

For Bob McIlvaine's son, it was the injuries found on his son Bobby's head, arm and skin that made him think the hijacked jetliner and building collapse couldn't have done it. He believes that explosives were detonated in the towers' basement before the planes hit the towers.

McIlvaine has not been able to determine where his son was when he died, but from the injuries — which include skin that was burned post-mortem — he assumes that his son was in or near the tower's lobby. McIlvaine questions the government's explanation that a fireball came down through the elevator shafts and burned those in the lobby.

"I spend three hours a day, every day, doing research on 9/11," said McIlvaine. "To me, this was a murder investigation. My son was murdered."

Tom Theimer watched the World Trade Center crumble while drinking coffee and watching television in his suburban Dallas home. Shaken, he bought flags for his porch and bumper stickers for his car reading "We will never forget."

A few years later, a friend of Theimer's wife casually mentioned that 9/11 "was an inside job." Theimer was livid and turned to the Internet, to prove the friend wrong.

The websites, the books and the documentaries he saw online persuaded him. He was wrong, and so was the system.

"I was duped," Theimer said. "It really hurt. I cried. I couldn't sleep for months."

Theimer said that he and others in Dallas are planning to show a new 9/11 documentary on the 10th anniversary. Remember Building 7 is trying to raise $1 million by Sept. 11 to support a new investigation into the collapses.

A conference on alternate 9/11 theories is being held in Toronto on Sept. 11.

The conference is headed by the International Center for 9/11 Studies, which was founded by James Gourley, a 31-year-old Dallas-area attorney who began to question the events of Sept. 11 during law school, while watching an activist make his argument on C-Span.

Gourley is aware of the theories about how skeptics are simply trying to justify and explain a random, horrific event.

"It's basically a backwards way of saying we're psychologically deranged," he said. "It's questioning the psychology of the people instead of questioning the facts."

Even in the heart of the conspiracy theory world, some find the alternate theories hard to believe.

At Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, Scott Dew hawked commemorative Kennedy assassination newspapers to tourists, standing under an oak tree, just steps from a white "X'' painted on the asphalt that marks where President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

Dew's newspapers — which cost $5 each and come encased in a plastic sleeve — devote several pages and diagrams to the varying theories of bullet projectiles and second shooters on the grassy knoll.

Kennedy's assassination was "a conspiracy by the government," Dew says. "Back then, in '63, this was a money and power deal."

But Sept. 11? A conspiracy? He shakes his head.

"I believe bin Laden was the attacker. I don't believe the other theories that President Bush or the government had anything to do with it. That would just be a little too sinful," he said.

1763 was before there even WAS a US Government. I assume you mean Colonel Amhursts' letter, unless you are just repeating what you have heard.

The letter wa a plan and there is no, as in ZERO, evidence that it was ever carried out.

to call a truth a 'conspiracy theory' is a subtle trick meant to downgrade the facts and protect the real criminals
    • DM 9 mths ago
Of course, if it's not the truth, then it really is a conspiracy theory... for example, Elvis is still alive. Truth or conspiracy?
    • berdoo 9 mths ago
DM, it's all about priorities. JFK, 9/11 or norway are very important topics. elvis still being alive is a diversion.

9 11 has traumatized too many NOT to hold the official conspiracy theory accountable for some disturbing facts that have not been explained.

The theory of 19 Muslim hijackers holds far less weight than a theory which observes basic laws of physics and forensic physical evidence. Total, symmetrical collapses, free fall speed of WTC 7, evidence of nano-thermite in all dust samples and molten steel 'running like lava' vs. the temperature limits of jet fuel and office fires - all amount to serious questions which demand answers.

I'd like to see someone besides the government propose the official theory to see how far THEY would get.

^ "What?" @ Don'tWiretapMebro. But in regards to the parent comment: wow, you really know the facts! You're very well read, sir! Keep it going!

To question 9/11 is a revolutionary act, now the government wants to target us because we disagree with them and demand answers.
We will not stop until we have gotten down to the root of this problem.
    • Angry Bird 9 mths ago
The root of your problem is that you aren't keeping up with your meds. Good night, loonies!
    • Amazon 9 mths ago
The root of the problem is scumbags like you who are nothing more than bootlickers worshiping the totalitarian state we have, people like you are in for a hell of a surprise.

Amazon, I agree with your comment above and I want to affirm you. Did you notice how this article is just another propaganda piece? They paint these "conspiracies" as if it's crazy and a coping mechanism! If 9/11 truly happened the way they want us to believe, then why do they need to continue to try to convince us with propaganda like this article?

Kennedy was intending to put the USA back on constitutional money- that end, end the Federal Reserve. I suspect its European owners weren't too happy with that. Many people had reason to want him gone; so many people have been executed over the investigation from doctors to waitresses than could statistically happen otherwise. Oddly, the lady they paraded out in the media as LH Oswald's mother got his birthday wrong in an interview. My favorite is the Australian press- somebody forgot about the international date line and the assassination story appeared a day before it happened. Not buying the magic bullet theory, but the BBC reconstruction.

oswald killed kennedy. go to the 6th floor depository museum and take a look and the man's rifle scores in the marine corps. there was no magic bullet. fact is the limo seats were not alligned or on the same level. kennedy sat 3 inches outside connely and above him because of the way the limo was custom built.

You have FAILED to even look at what you have read and adopted with any critical eye. The mantra of the conspiracists is that everyone who beleives the "official story" has their head in the sand, is sheep, beleives whatever the government tells them, etc. Yet you boght the conspiracy crap hook, line, and sinker.

But your IDIOTIC statement about them "forgetting the international date line" takes the cake. WHY would they send out news before it occurred? IN any plan, no matter how hair brained, WHY would they send out news before? What if the car broke down and they didn't get to shoot him? What if the plane broke down and he never made it to Dallas? There is zero chance that anyone would have scripted this before hand because of the risk. For God's sake, can we agree they at least intended to "get away with it?"

ADDITIONALLY, and equally disposiitve, is the FACT that we are talking about the DEATH of the president, it was going to be reported after it happened, there was no need to script the reporting, "they" could have told the news anything they wanted, they just would not have done so ahead of time.

Anyone who can't see this has mental deficiency which precludes further discussion.

Bin Laden sure did a great job enriching Larry Silverstien through the insurance!!!! Way to screw em over Osama!!!! Can you say double indemnity LOL. Al-Qaeda are some lousy terrorists. Whenever they blow up something, americans make money

These so-called 'conspiracy theories' thrive because there are actually people out there who are smart enough to think for themselves and don't rely on infotainment to tell them their opinions (the very same reason people are freaking out over the economy). A person has to be really naive not to see that the headshot that killed Kennedy came from the front/right. The Zapruder film was locked up for 14 years after Dallas, and the only reason people believe in the lone gunman nonsense is because a rookie reporter by the name of Dan Rather watched the Zapruder film and said that there was no doubt that the shot came from behind... There was more than a second gunman, there was an entire assasination team there.

I can write an encyclopedia based on the facts concerning the events of 9/11 that the media intentionally ignores. How many out there know that there was another person wanted in connection to those events, but when the FBI served search warrent of this person's business, he had already left the country?
The 'collapse' of the South Tower violates the Law of Angular Momentum, and that is very easy to see. The tower leaned over approx. 20 degrees, stopped and went straight down. According to Newtonian physics (that don't lie) the way to stop that rotation is either by an equal and opposite force. . .or to remove the fulcrum that the rotation is centered on. There was no noticable damage on the opposite side of the South Tower, so what stopped the rotation and cuased the undamaged side to blow out??? In addition, the molten material pouring out of the building has never been explained and the aluminum assumption is just dumb. If a person thinks nothing is wrong with that and that it's been explained properly, that person is naive and this is yet another example of the power the media has to brainwash people.

I am very skeptical about anything the government says these days, even if I see it with my own eyes. Our government is corrupt, hedonistic, geedy, and dangerous.
  • Free to be Infinity  •  9 mths ago
What amazes me are the people that don't believe this could be true. Do any of you not see what government has done over the years? The U.S. wanted a war in Iraq. The U.S. wanted control of the oil. The U.S. wanted a war in Afghanistan. The U.S. wanted control of the opium for prescription medications that Americans are so crazy about. The medical companies want the opium - they are making billions off it. If this wasn't a set up, I don't know what is.

Oh how about Prescott Bush trying to overthrow the US Government in the 30's? The real truth comes out - both the Bush and Walker sides of the family made their original money as profiteers during the Civil War. That entire family should be extirpated root and branch from this country out to at least the fourth degree of consanguinity. War profiteering. Bankers to Nazis. Best friends with the nastier elements in the Saudi royal family. What more does anyone need to know about these shameless criminal family of malevolent #$%$holes? They have been as rotten as human beings can be for more than 150 years. They are America's Borgias. The same people who tried to screw us in the 30's are screwing us now, the only difference is we don't have JFK and FDR to stop them.

For all the disbelievers, look at it this way. The govt lies about inflation as they do not even count food and gas and oil prices and they say unemployment is 9.1% when everyone knows it is almost double that. Why would you trust them on anything important or secretive.

I am not much of a conspiracy Nut,but my question will always be.
Can someone give me an honest answer as to how,and what brought down the Smaller building of the World trade center, the one that was not Hit by Anything but yet came down just like the other 2.

"Conspiracy theory" is a term invented by government think-tanks back in the 1960s to ridicule and oppose those openly skeptical of mainstream media reporting. As long as there is any evidence to support a conspiracy, it is no longer a theory. The truth doesn't need lengthy conjecture to stand on its own, and the media has gone to ridiculous extremes in attempting to explain how a handful of Islamic extremists barely capable of driving automobiles were capable of defeating a multi-trillion dollar intelligence apparatus by hijacking and piloting commercial aircraft with military precision into targets hundreds of miles away, especially considering at least two of those flights never existed per the BTS log.

No one, except for those responsible, really "knows" what happened on 9/11/2001. 90% of the population only knows what they were told to believe. To some the official explanation made no sense and they began to dig and ask questions which only brings more unanswered questions. The government choose not to do a meaningful investigation, so people have no real answers. The government just wants people to take their word for it. So far, so good...

While I certainly don't consider myself to be a 9/11 conspiracy theorist, I have one gnawing question: what is the official explanation for why #7 WTC imploded, when no plane ever hit it??? Another point: the press treats these people like loonies, but the direct result of 9/11 was a very expensive, ongoing war against a country that never attacked us; that had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11; that was accused, falsely, by our Gov't, of harboring WMD. And people seriously wonder why nobody believes the Govt's version of these events? In this day & age, only the naive believe what they're told. I will raise some other "curious" questions in a later post, if I get around to it.

People across the comment boards - Take a real good look at this article and how its written, this article is ment to demonize, discredit people who want the truth regarding the events of Sep. 11 2001. Notice that as we the people of the United States demand information that has been deliberately witheld, censored and even destroyed by our own government, they have still refused to provide us with answers, why? If they want to take away our freedoms and throw us into wars that only benefit the war profiteers and oil corporations, then I say, why do they deliberately hold information we have a RIGHT to, Let us pay the Government with the same side of the coin, Just like police officers nowadays can do whatever they want to a person, I say if the Government has nothing to hide then what are they afraid of? They are afraid of what many of us already know, there are traitors within our government that committed the greatest act of murder against its people.
Its time we take our country back.

The 9/11 Official Story Conspiracy is the biggest joke ever concocted. It only takes a person that devotes time to research all the evidence and see the inconsistencies that are filled in the original 9/11 Commission Report. Their are even members from the Commission that admit the entire "investigation" was a complete joke and absolutely manipulated.

ex) How is it that each top member of the Bush Admin was allowed to all get together behind closed doors before they went before the panel for questioning? Even then, their excuses fell to pieces when the evidence was thrown in their faces that they EACH signed off on CIA & FBI intel of an eminent attack. Condilezza Rice is on video lying that she had no idea that this would be capable of happening.
