John Kerry Actually Had a Lower Tax Rate Than Romney

In a bit of Democratic comeuppance for dinging Mitt Romney for how little he pays in taxes, Wonkblog published this chart of presidential candidates' tax rates. And wouldn't you know, John Kerry had a (slightly) lower tax rate than Romney does. In 2003, a year before running for president, Kerry's tax rate was 13.1 percent, versus Romney's at 13.9 percent in 2010. As Brad Plumer, who culled together tax returns to make his chart, explains, "John Kerry’s overall rate is so low — lower than Romney’s, in fact — because his return is getting lumped together with that of his (wealthy) wife, Teresa Heinz, who had a lot of investment income." (On his own, Kerry's tax rate is 22.9 percent.)

RELATED: Romney, Bachmann to Formally Announce in June

That's that very same sort of lowly-taxed "investment income" that Romney's been criticized for during the 2012 campaign. And it's an income stream that the rich tend to earn a high proportion of their income from. So like Romney, Kerry has been knocked for having a rich guy's low tax rate because of investment income, as this 2006 ad shows. And there's the whole business of Kerry docking the ultimate rich-person thing (his yacht) in Rhode Island instead of Massachusetts to avoid taxes. What Romney's and Kerry's stories show: any time the wealthy run for high office, they'll inevitably be reprimanded for the low taxes they (more likely than not) pay.

Wasn't it John Kerry who was trying to get out of paying taxes on his new boat as well and why is he still a senator? He should be put in jail

If Kerry should be put in jail for tax matters, what punishment would be appropriate for Bush who nearly bankrupted this country?

      Didn't Kerry marry his money?

I guess the 'rats don't get upset at Kerry because he uses his money for "good causes" just like Michael 1% Moore.

Who cares which party leaders pay the least in taxes? Require all of them to pay on every dollar earned, just like the rest of us! No one is more privileged than anyone else. Cut the loopholes completely out. You earn, you pay....whether it's 15% or 30%....there are no party lines. People who make tons of money have the money to hire people who do nothing but try and figure out ways to avoid paying their share of what they have made. Maybe everyone should be required to do their own taxes....lol....that should really mess up the IRS during the tax time!

Lets see. Buy your own words they are job creators.

that might upset the 47% of low income americans who don't pay any taxes
but i am for it let's put a 15% flat tax on all money earned for everyone
        that would be fair

Kerry had a lower tax rate and has much more money.
He's using his plastic surgery bruising in an attempt to look like a regular guy.
He has 5 houses and a custom made yacht he docks in RI to avoid paying MA taxes.
He likes to make taxes but not pay them.

There are more millionaire Democrats in the House and Senate than Republican millionaires. That is a fact. This liberal media #$%$ is akin to race baiting, except this is class warfair baiting

Libs have never had a problem with total hypocrisy. At least Romney EARNED his money. Kerry made it the old fashioned way..............he married it. Then the POS tries to evade the sales tax on his half million dollar yacht. And libs are too effing stupid to see........TOO FUNNY

It only figures that Kerry paid less because the tax loopholes were engineered by liberal democrats. It only makes sense that the democrats know where the holes are.

'Engineered' by liberal Democrats? You're a fool if you think one party has a monopoly on virtue, especially when it comes to the tax code.

Don't you love it when multi millionaires tussle over taxes? I think the poor should pay NO taxes as they need what they earn the most.

It is immaterial whoever it is. The issue is that the tax code needs to be reformed as the President suggested to plug the corporate tax loophole. If we dig deeper other folks will rear up. Romney is not the issue neither is Kerry nor Murdoch. Let us not be distracted from what the issue is,plugging the corporate tax loop #$%$ The republicans argue that it is necessary for job creation. In the past 12 years (Bush 8 + Obama 4), all it did was to send American jobs and investments abroad, including to Caymen Islands and pump money into super PACS. 32 million dollars pumped into negative ads Florida republican primaries in 1 month ! Money that should have created American jobs!!

let's put a 15% flat tax on all money earned for everyone on every dollar earned no loopholes at all

The uninformed person that says that marriage is a tax benefit doesn't know the tax laws. Married people pay the highest tax rate since Congress has not renewed the marriage penalty. Two persons living together and making $42K pay a tax rate of 25%. Married people have their incomes COMBINED TO MAKE A HIGHER RATE, these two people married would pay a 28% rate.

This won't be on the national (run by liberal democrats) networks.

The Big Exception-Kerry is a Dem. Dems faults are only discussed AFTER THE FACT, WHEN IT'S MEANINGLESS. Like Obama, before the 2008 election, while the Media attacked Palin.
Like what's happening Right Now in 2012.

Shocked, I am. A guy who spent 4 months serving in Vietnam avoiding taxes, legally. Shocked, I am. Too bad about the botox going bad, dude. I hear the circus is looking to hire freaks.

hmm, let's see. Maybe the difference is that Kerry wasn't promoting a tax plan that would significantly reduce his own taxes like Romney is doing?
