John Kerry and Snoop Dogg Meet, Bump Fists

John Kerry, Secretary of State, and Snoop Lion (née Dogg), Tha Doggfather, recently met at a black tie party to honor the Kennedy Center honorees. It went well!

To summarize: While an instrumental version of Kennedy Center honoree Billy Joel's "She's Always a Woman to Me" plays in the background and Kerry's wife and ketchup heiress Teresa Heinz watches from the sidelines, Kerry and Dogg bond over their shared love of Herbie Hancock. (I think. It's hard to know for sure, but Hancock was one of the honorees and Snoop Dogg thanked him for creating hip-hop at the awards ceremony -- which he also says to Kerry.)

At the conclusion, Kerry puts out a fist for Dogg to pound, which goes remarkably smoothly, considering Kerry's age (he just turned 70) and dorkiness. This seems to come as a surprise to both Kerry and Dogg, who lets out a delighted "Kerry!" at the end. Kerry gets points off for his "oooooh, you gave me pound!" line at the end, though.

Bump successful, both men ran to Twitter to share the news:

Kerry's move was potentially risky. Just last week we found out that fist bumping nearly led to an international incident when an Air Force general was dismissed from his post for, among many other things, embarrassing a Russian tour guide with a failed fist bump. From CNN:

'At one point, he tried to give her (the guide) a fist bump,' the report said, citing a witness. 'She had no idea what he was trying to do. It was again, very, very embarrassing.'

The reaction thus far has been overwhelmingly positive, although I haven't seen what Fox News has to say about it. In 2008, a Fox News anchor called the move a "terrorist fist jab," so, not holding out too much hope here.
